It's the peultimate day of BaD so even though I may not have gotten to every game in my collection, It's been a blast showcasing and highlighting my stupid collection of crap. So here are today's games!
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World is the sequel to the hit Tales of Symphonia and if the first Symphonia game was an excellent game, the sequel well...just is average. The overall gameplay isn't bad. The battles are fun, you can raise monsters pokemon style by bringing them into battles and evolving them, and the game features the return of your favorite original Tales cast of characters. The main problem I have with this game is the story and the main characters. I hate Emile. I can't stand Emile. It's hard for me to root for the hero when I found the suave and badass Richter so much cooler. The story meanwhile in meandering to a point to where there are flashbacks to scenes that happened just a minute earlier.
Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars is a surprise fighting game that is just about the strangest thing to come stateside. You wouldn't know many of the Tatsunoko stars unless you're well versed in that. On top of that the main boss in the game is Yami from Okami and while Amaterasu didn't get into a fighter until a marvel vs capcom game, it was really cool. The U.S. game is also different in that there are mini games that are missing that are exclusive to the japanese version only.
Tenchu Shadow Assassins is pretty interesting game in that the stealth of Tenchu meets some pretty strange wii motion controls. These really only come into play during sword fights, but there are some things like aiming shurikens. There are a quite a few story missions as well as side mission. There's a lot of trial and error gameplay, however when you sneak around with those expert ninja skills expertly, it's really fun.
The Godfather Blackhand Edition is really fun. With the blackhand edition you are able to use motion controls to beat up various gangsters, police officers, or random barbers whose business you want to extort. It was a pretty fun, GTA inspired game and I enjoyed it quite a bit o work myself from mafia member to the Don of New York City.
The Conduit was an ambitious 3rd person shooter in which John Adams is working with aliens to take over the world. In what would seem like a ludicrous, yet hilarious game idea set in colonial times...this John Adams exists in modern times. Though it's still not a bizaare as the sequel where you team up with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to take on aliens. The conduit was fairly average. In a fps starved genre on the Wii, The Conduit stood out. Even if it's not perfect, some enjoyed it.
The Monkey King: The Legend Begins is another in a series of budget, side scrolling shoot 'em ups. The game doesn't take very long to beat and is terribly easy with a certain power up combination. The front cover also doesn't represent the actual game. The realistic looking cover hides a cartoon graphic, japanese inspired shooter. Was it worth the $1 I spent on it... probably not.
The House of the Dead: Overkill is an absolute blast. Overkill is an on rails arcade style shooter that never takes itself seriously and is absolutely bonkers. The characters are great, playing off the straight man/comedic foil gimmick you know and love in many movies. In fact the characters even reference movies and that it's just like a movie or game. Agent G and his foul mouthed Samuel L Jackson inspired sidekick Detective Washington are a terrific foil. The gameplay is fun, if not somewhat lackluster on the graphical side. It was re-released on the PS3 with move support and it features a hilarious cut scene not on the Wii that features miniguns
The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return are just that... a return to the arcade series and they are pretty much arcade ports or 2 & 3. Obviously the games are fun and while 2 has not aged very well, it's still just as hilarious as ever in terms of the bad english translated voice acting.
The Legend of Skyward Sword is a devisive title. In a way, Breath of the Wild is fixing some of those complaints that Skyward Sword had. The motion controls that were at times imprecise-Gone, Skyward Sword was fairly more linear feeling with a lack of an explorative overworld? Well we gave you an overworld in BotW!. Despite my minor gripes with Skyward Sword I felt it was really fun. I enjoyed the added mechanics of upgrading your equipment. The stamina meter was definitely interesting, and I really enjoyed the various dungeon mechanics such as the Sandship with it's time stones or the buddhist/underworld dungeon with the awesome Kalaktos boss fight.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess gave fans the first motion controlled Zelda (unless you had the Gamecube version) But even if you bought the GC version there are many people who saw Twilight Princess as what is essentially Ocarina of Time's love letter. It has homages to the Sacred Grove and Skull Kid, you have your standard Forest, volcano, and water temple dungeon. The overworld is massive, but I essentially felt Hyrule Field had one purpose in mind for a few horseback battles you encounter as well as the 3rd Ganondorf phase. It's a pretty enjoyable Zelda and it received an HD remaster for Wii U!
The Sky Crawlers: The Innocent Aces is a dogfighting flight simulator that's based on some anime movie I haven't seen. You take control of the aptly named "Cheetah" who goes off with other aptly named 'killdren" children designed to kill or be killed in various dogfights. It's a bit nonsensical and silly, but the gameplay is really fun and fluid.
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam along with Tony Hawk Project 8 were the last good Tony Hawk games. Remember those days? While Downhill Jam is fairly average compared to 8, It's also fun. In Downhill Jam you can control Tony Hawk or a cast of fictional skaters in a race to the finish. You'll go from a top of the mountain to the bottom or race from one end of Tokyo to the other. The game can be a bit wonky control wise and thankfully there is an automatic reset button for when you wipeout or crash.
Tomb Raider Underworld was an average game on the PS3/360 and while not as acclaimed as Anniversary or Legend it was playable. The same cannot be said of Underworld on Wii.The main problem is the glitches and bugs. It could be a fairly decent standard definition version, but the game will not let you progress. In many instances the game bugs out on doors or will glitch you out into a void.
Tornado Outbreak tasks you with controlling a Tornado hero who is tasked to destroy Planet Earth to take out evil...makes sense. The game is fairly decent. You'll rip up cars, telephone poles, or just about anything else in the way. It's pretty enjoyable. It was released multi-platform too.
