Gaming Plans and Dark Souls (I'm back)

Well I’ve officially broke Skyrim with my Fist-Build. My badassery is so immense that I was test running him and I managed to wipe out the entire towns of Whiterun and Solitude without breaking a sweat. Dragons no longer pose any threat to me. Giants and mammoths fall with ease. I’m pretty sure that I even saw a Bandit bow down to me in a cavern once.

Fuck you Giant!

Fuck you Giant

But with Skyrim out of the way, I’ve once again shifted my focus back to Bioshock. I absolutely love Bioshock, and I’m slowly plucking away at it bullet by bullet and vigor by vigor. Once I finish Bioshock, I plan on adventuring throughout the lands of Silent Hill thanks to NicoleB1989. After her mentioning of Silent Hill Downpour, I miraculously stumbled across a copy for $8 and I couldn’t refuse a deal like that! And once I finish SH Downpour, I’ll get back into Dishonored for a third time I suppose unless something else comes my way beforehand!

I’ve been seeing countless mentionings of Dark Souls around the interwebs as of lately and I think it’s about time I get back into the saddle and face the ever longing fear of death once again. I said before that I was pondering the option of doing a Dark Souls play through/walk through for you all, and after some discussion with my buddy Bee, we decided we were going to go for it (Starting Saturday!). We’ll probably record in chunks of 10-20 minutes, so please be patient since we’ve never really done anything like this before and it’ll be a rather expansive project for us to undertake.

It also turned out to be rather unanimous in terms of people wanting to see a Bow-Build as well so this should be a nice warm up to prepare myself for the looming Dark Souls II release. I’ll also use a Dagger every so often just to try to give some pointers and showcase my awesome hand-to-hand combat skills for different enemies and bosses, but for the most part I’ll be using the Bow.

So that’s that. Future gaming plans and my inevitable return to Lordran.

Let’s see if I remember how to do this now.

I'll see what I can do to show you the way, or at least something to help you get through the area!

my favorite weapon in dark souls is the spiked mace/morning star weapon.  God, I love smashing in people's skulls with that damn thing.  I like axes too, but that spiked mace is just so great for punishing the enemy.

I've never really used the 'crushing' weapons before in Dark Souls. I've always been more apt to use weapons that inflicted Bleed (Katanas are GREAT for this effect!).

ah.  personally, I like "crushing" the enemy and bludgeoning them when I can.  There's a certain sadistic pleasure I find in it.  Wink

lol

I'll have to do a Blunt Playthrough sometime.

ha... Sounds like a collegiate experience

I personally like the black knight sword yes its slow but effective and deals serious damage.

For the most part, ALL of the Black Knight equipment is incredible powerful. I ALWAYS rock out with the Black Knight Shield. It has 95% Fire Resistance and 100% Physical Resistance, which is amazing considering the amount of enemies that use Fire/Physical Attacks. The Weapons are a BIT slow to swing, but they're definitely power (Especially the Black Knight Halbred!).

I'm looking forward to your Dark Souls walkthrough. Maybe this will entice me to finally purchase it.

I'll do what I can to sway you!

It's definitely not for everyone, but as it stands for me; it's probably one of my all time favorite games!

That's a pretty big statement! I do hear that a lot though so there has to be some truth to it haha

To put it simply; it's the only game I've ever beaten 7 consecutive times (Probably 10-11 playthroughs total). I've racked up nearly 300 hours in it, and I own both a 360 AND PS3 copy. So yeah..

I'm in love with this game just a BIT.. lol!

With the knife of dunwall dlc out, now may be the right time to replay dishonored.  Wait, I need to beat bioshock infinite first.

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/16/2013 at 03:22 PM

I need to get through the original story arc of Dishonored first. I'm too clumsy to be effective, so I essentially bumble my way through every mission like a drunk assassin

I did the stealthy, quiet good guy playthrough the first time.  Then I said screw it, and killed everybody and was loud as can be.  I had as much, if not more fun the second playthrough.

I ultimately decided to save my Low Chaos playthrough until my second time through the game. I figured it would be easier to go through and kill everyone and learn the basic lay of the land before I attempted to go through and attempt it blindly. Hopefully my strategy will pay off

I'm seriously considering that fist build lol. Maybe it'll help renew my interest in Skyrim. I'm having trouble with Dishonored. When I started to play it, I didn't know that it was in 1st person. A stealth game in 1st person? It's just weird. Good luck with Dark Souls. Not like your gonna need it lol. Cool

Dishonored took a while to grow on me. Actually, I initially quit my first time and waited nearly 3 months to pick it up again, then I liked it quite a bit!

And as for Dark Souls... Well..
It's a Bow Build.. So it'll be rather tough and infuriating lol

Will the community jump into your game play session and battle you? That would be funny. PvP. Now you have the game and other players trying to kill you. Does the game even have PvP? I need to finish up Demon's Souls.Frown

Actually... I could post my PSN and try to give details for of when I'll be on and where I'll be, and the community is more than welcome to invade me. I'd be cool with that lol

Look forward to the Dark Souls playthrough, maybe I'll see what all the hype is about. That's not to knock the game, I haven't played it, just saying I feel a bit left out with all the gushing over it, and barely knowing what it is based on the trailer for its sequel and a lot of mentions about its difficulty.

Glad to know that you're looking forward to it! It seems to be the general opinion which gets me pretty excited to do this!

And hopefully you'll get a good understanding of what the game is and about whenever I start posting my playthrough. It really is an incredible experience.

Excited about seeing how your Dark Souls video walkthrough plays out. I want to see how you allocate your stats, what equipment you use, and what rings, items, and combat strategies you use with your bow/dagger build throughout the game.

Is one of your goals going to be to get Priscilla's Dagger once you get to Painted World? Is that dragon weapon really good? I heard about it on the wiki and I tried to get it when I decided to fight Priscilla but I messed up and killed her before I could get the tail. When I play through a second time I'm going to try and get her tail again. I heard it's a really strong bleed damage type dagger and I saved up all my dragon scales for it to upgrade and now since I don't have it all those scales are going to waste lol. I don't know what to use them on.

This is going to be really fun, Dark Souls is the type of game that I think is really fun to watch others play. There's something about it that translates really well to sharing the experience with others even though it's mostly an epic single player RPG. Other RPGs don't work that way, I don't want to watch people play Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout, Final Fantasy, or anything like that. Dark Souls is unique and works perfectly for a video walkthrough.

Thanks Michael! I figured you would be pretty stoked about this!

I pretty much have a mental plan on how I'm going to approach this with the stats and equipment allocations, but so far it's only a mental thing, and until I get into it and see what all I really need I can't really plan too far ahead. I always like to plan loosely so I have room to improvise along the way Wink

BASICALLY though, I'll be leveling myself solely through Vit, End, and Dex, all of which will be in a 1-2-2 ratio. Since it's a Bow-Build, I'll be relying more on Endurance and Dexterity since most of my time will be spent at a distance. As far as equipment goes, I'll be grabbing the Black Bow of Pharis at some point, I was going to use the Bandit Knife because the criticals are amazing (Priscilla's Dagger is great, but it'll be tough to get with a bow/dagger build, and the Criticals aren't nearly as good as the Bandit Knife). Armor will be light so I can easily dodge and escape. Rings will probably be Ring of Favor (For Health since it's the 1 of the 1-2-2 ratio) and Hawk Ring for Arrow Distance.

But like I said before, it's all just a ROUGH Mental Draft right now, and I'm sure it will change along the way! Maybe at some point I'll even be wielding a bow in one hand and a crossbow in another with a Shield/Dagger queued up for backup? It's all definitely up in the air at the moment.

But whatever you do, don't expect a Pro Playthrough with this. Bow-Builds are pretty tough and I'm sure I'll die quite a few times. But it'll add some hilarity to the mix Laughing

I can't remember if I said this to you or not, but my brother Jeff made a character who only used his fists in Skyrim and the character looked like Popeye when I watched him play, punching dragons and sending everything in the air when he punched them.

I do remember you telling me about that! You should give it a whirl sometime as well, it really was a lot of fun, although the beginning stages were rather difficult at times

Looking forward to the Dark Souls play through. It'll be interesting to see how a veteran plays it. I'm making progress through the game once again. It seems like once you do one thing, it gives you momentum is get through some more. Which bioshock are you playing through, I'm guessing Infinite?

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/17/2013 at 07:36 AM

lol, Veteran Playthrough....

Oh my..

I hope I don't disappoint! Especially with a Bow/Dagger build since it's a bit tougher than the normal builds people play through the game with.

And yes, I'm playing through Bioshock Infinite right now. It's a great game and I definitely would recommend it if you haven't tried it yet!

Playdos

Yea I haven't gotten a chance to get Infinite yet. I have been avoiding all the press release and reviews but it has been hard. I loved the first Bioshock. The story, setting and narrative were just outstanding. It really is a work of art.

That will be a tough build. I have trouble enough using my character with clubs so I can hardly imagine how difficult it will be to use dagger/bow. But I am excited for your playthrough, hopefully I can pick up a few tricks for my next playthrough. I just beat the Four Kings after trying what seemed to be a million times, so I think I am nearing the end.

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/18/2013 at 07:00 AM

I had a tough time staying away from reviews as well. I would glance at numerical reviews, but I would avoid anything written just so it didn't ruin anything for me!

And it is a tough build actually. It takes a whole different approach than the normal builds in Dark Souls! I'm glad to know you're excited though!

Im quite excited to watch your Dark Souls walkthrough. I also cant wait to hear about ur opinion of Silent Hill Downpour. You think you could help me learn how to do builds properly? I guess Im dumb when it comes to it because I couldnt do a proper build if my life depended on it!

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/17/2013 at 07:38 AM

If it comes down to a Demon's/Dark Souls build, I can definitely help you out! As for other games, I can help you but it won't be as in-depth as a Souls build would be!

And hopefully I'll be getting into Downpour soon. I THINK I'm about 3/4 of the way through Bioshock Infinite right now, so I should be wandering through Silent Hill by the end of the month!

Definitely looking forward to the Dark Souls walkthrough; it's a game I'm looking forward to diving into myself, and "Let's Play"s are always good for getting a sense of the game before you get into it yourself.

Skyrim is effing immense!! Even though I am nearing the end of my playthrough as my assassin Wood Elf character that I created on release day, I have the itching suspicion I'll be starting a new character at some point. Skyrim is the type of game that you take a break from for awhile, and return to kind of rediscover everything, and I'm looking forward to that!

Glad to know you're looking forward to it! We should be recording this Saturday and I'll hopefully have something up by Saturday!

And Skyrim is a massive game, and the DLC seems to make it twice as large! If you don't have the DLC yet, I'd definitely recommend Dragonborn since it takes place on the island from Morrowind.

LOVED Dragonborn - I was excited when I initially heard about it, and I absolutely loved exploring Solsteihm. All the quests, armor sets, environments, NPC's, and hell even the beautiful new music were all a blast to explore and discover. Now THAT's how good DLC is done!

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/22/2013 at 07:09 AM

Exactly!

I had no qualms about paying for the Dragonborn DLC. It was massive and greatly extended the gameplay, which is just how DLC should be done!

I need to make some progress on Silent Hill Downpour this week. Great buy on that game, btw. Dishonored has me greatly frustrated. I gave up on it for a few weeks, but may try again soon. Have a strategy guide now that might help me with some combat tips. I like the Elizabeth image you showed. It's like she's talking to me. She thinks I'm a major pain in the ass!

Chris Yarger Community Manager

I'm kind of stuck at the moment in the cave, but other than that it's been a decent game. The combat is still kind of clunky, but I think it's been improved from what it used to be at least! So far though I've definitely been enjoying it, it's SO much better the SH: Shattered Memories. That game was just awful.
