Toukiden 2 is a better 3D Ys than 3D Ys

Update: Before you read this...
This is basically a rant about how I think the new Ys 8 feels a bit slower somehow in comparison to the older games and also compared to new Toukiden which I feel are very similar. My impressions of Ys 8 come from the latest demo on JPN store and I noticed in a trailer video that there DOES seem to be some kind of super sprint ability for the character, so I might have a bad impression from the demo. Also consider the game demo is in Japanese so its possible I didn't notice a sprint feature. Either way, it's late! I'm tired! Play both games! I'm making a bid deal about nothing. They are both great! But if you've played older Ys games, what do you think of games new fuller 3D style?

Toukiden2 is a better 3D Ys than 3D Ys

One of the things that I love about the older Ys games is the burst of speed when traveling the world map. You zip around with almost Sonic like haste (as in the 3D Adventure games), almost a bit too loosely actually. The camera is pulled back far enough to get a good semi-birds eye view of the beautiful environment backgrounds, enemies and captures all the hectic action on the ground that a close-up view would make more confusing, considering that on top of all that visual you're traveling around with a party of characters with their own unique flashy combat abilities. There is just a lot going on in any give screen at any given time.

I downloaded and finished the Ys 8 Demo from the Japanese PSN store, and considering that it is basically a 3D interpretation of the older games, the roll movement feels a bit too slow. In the older games you basically rolled across entire screens of map getting around very swiftly and seemlessly, complimenting the fast-paced action. It kind of adds to the addiction of mashing the buttons, like a mouse-click in a Diablo game. Now, Ys 8 just feels like every other 3D hack-n-slash anime game, just skinned with familiar characters, combat and music, but traversing the environments really didn't feel as fast as the older games. I'm sounding too harsh here. I don't think the game is bad. It's Ys. It's a perfectly suitable Ys game, my main issue is the speed. Also, there is something about the camera angle that makes it seem like any other cluttered JRPG, like Tales games. I don't think converting 2D or semi 3D JRPGs to a full 3D format works for every game. There is just way too much happening on screen sometimes, that being close up makes things confusing. I liked Final Fantasy XV a lot more when battle areas were large and empty, not indoors or full of foliage and trees. It looked nice, but gameplay wise, those assets just got in the way.

Funny enough, Toukiden 2 demo came out recently, which I also completed and I now think that it is basically a better Ys game than Ys 8 anyway. It's visually more impressive and you can sprint around the map super fast. Your character actually takes a little time to come to a complete stop when you disable the sprint action. You have a full party, lots of weapons to choose from with special combos and giant boss fights. I'm being picky here. If you love Ys, you'll love Ys8, and probably love it more than any Ys ever, but if you like Ys, you should play Toukiden.

I'm also a hypocrite because I hate open world games with objectives and prefer linear story tunnel JRPGs and Ys 8 seems more fitting for someone like me who still likes older style games. I really just want faster sprint in latest Ys I guess?

Also, I suggest watching videos of the games because screenshots don't do justice.

Better than Ys?  Thats some pretty big shoes to fill especially since Ys Sever is one of my favorite PSP games and my most favorite Ys games in general.

Well, better than Ys 8 demo, but they are graphically different so it doesn't seem fair to compare now that I think about it. I love Ys series.

This all depends on what your definition of Ys is.

I'm guessing you haven't played Ys Seven or Memories of Celceta because they're quite a bit slower than VI, Oath in Felghana, or Origins. They're still really great games but MoC especially took a while to get my interest, so maybe VIII is the same?
I've also played the demo for Toukidon 2 and somewhat like it. I like that it's less like monster hunter's regimented zones and more open ended. The combat especially is quite fun. If you end up buying it let me know which platform you get it on because I might grab it too. Seems like it would be a fun game to play with other people.

Also, have you heard of Dauntless? It's a free to play Monster Hunter clone that seems like it could be fun.

Also, what is your favourite Ys game? Mine is definitely Origins, because I like how different the 3 playable characters are in both story and gameplay, with the third being the fastest and most satisfying in the entire series. My second favourite would be Oath in Felghana, followed by Seven, and then Idk what else.

No. I haven't played the last two Ys games. Oath is my favorite because I played it first on PSP and I think the compact screen made the visuals pop more. Second would be Origins. That speed that I love in Ys that you mention that feels absent from the newer games seems to be in place in Toukiden. Playing Toukiden gives me that fast feeling I had when I played Ys. I don't think newer Ys games are bad, but transitioning into full 3D makes all these games feel similar, whereas before Ys felt more unique, but it's also attributed to the camera view, which is pulled back far away to see everything.

Dauntless look cool, but let's see how well the devs support older PCs.

I'll wait for a sale on Toukiden. I might want to try out the first game since it's probably a lot cheaper right now. I'd like to see what changes they made too. I'm not sure how Co-op works, but there was a thing called 'joint operations' where other characters would should up on my map and join fights, but not sure if it's other players or NPCs.

Buy a new PC ya Pleb :p

No seriously, they're expensive as shit and can be quit stressful. Take your time.

I don't really get any Ys vibes from this game. What weapon did you choose? I'm playing the full game now and it's pretty rad, but vastly different (and superior) to the original which I wasn't overly fond of. The original is just Monster Hunter with a bit faster combat, whereas this one has an open world and feels more fluid. Plus this one has more stuff built in for solo players whereas the original felt like it really pushed you towards multiplayer.

I tried a variety of weapons in the Toukiden 2 demo. The only one I didn't like was the gun. It takes too long to reload, unless there is some trick to it. Did you buy it for PC or PS4?

I didn't buy it. I'm steam sharing with a friend who bought it. I just want to try a bit more than the demo. I'm definitely going to buy it, probably for whatever console you buy it for. I just don't see the connection to Ys in terms of speed. It definitely reminds me of newer Ys games in that it's somewhat open and has a lot to do with collecting animal parts.

I just added Toukiden 2 to my rental list. Ys VIII looks cool too but I see it's not due until the end of the year. I want to try that too.

I'm not familiar with either series because they're in a genre I don't play but it seems like the Y's demo just didn't click with you. They both seem like they offer what fans of the game would want, and maybe the demo doesn't do the game justice or maybe the devlopers were trying something new to bring in folks like myself, who wouldn't try the game, give it a spin.

Im in chapter 4 of Toukiden 2. The baddies are getting fucking awesome to fight. I fought like 2 new big ones toward the end of chapter 3. I really like how Koei is trying to separate Toukiden from MH. The open world approach was for sure a success in my book. I also feel that its a lot easier to learn compared to MH. I originally didnt play Monster Hunter because it came off has hard to learn and it especially didnt get any love from me when I played MHU3. It wasnt till MHU4 that I actually started to enjoy it.
