Get Off Your Keister and Celebrate Easter!

Happy Easter everybody!  Easter is one of my favorite holidays.  As a Christian, I appreciate the religious aspects, but I also think the secular stuff is a lot of fun, too.  I enjoy decorating Easter eggs and all the bright pastel colors and Easter has some of the best candy out of any holiday (and this is coming from someone who usually doesn’t like candy).  So I’ve got some Easter treats for all of you!  New game reviews I’ve written recently over at GamerDad!  Yay!  Please click on as many links as you can and maybe even post a comment or two.  I’d appreciate it!  OK let’s begin!

Pokémon Easter Egg Decorating Kit

One of the things I loved to do as a kid was decorate Easter eggs.  We used to get one of those egg decorating kits every year, and back then it was always the generic Paas brand.  But now they have all sorts of Easter egg decorating kits, with licenses like Minions and Star Wars and this year we got Pokémon.  And whenever I see something weird and video game related that I think kids would like, I’ll post it on GamerDad!  I did this before with video game related Easter egg kits like Angry Birds.  This one is pretty much a generic Easter egg decorating kit, but has Pokémon stickers and egg holders and such.  Not sure what Pokémon has to do with Easter, but kids like it so I guess that’s OK.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild amiibo Figures

So they released some amiibo figures alongside Breath of the Wild, and so naturally I got them all so here are some pictures of them.  I beat Breath of the Wild a couple of weeks ago, and while I really enjoyed it, it’s not my favorite Zelda game or anything.  It was way too hard and I miss regular Zelda dungeons.  And I’d rather fight every enemy I come across, not avoid them in fear that my weapons may break.  But it was nice that they tried something different.  Kind of like how Mega Man X was different than Mega Man.  I prefer classic Mega Man, but Mega Man X is exactly what the series needed at the time.  And that’s how I feel about Breath of the Wild.

Care for our World (iPad)

Another holiday that’s coming up is Earth Day.  But who cares about that?  JUST JOKING! I do like the Earth.  All my favorite restaurant are on it.  Anyway so this is an interactive story book for kids based on a real book.  I really do like reviewing these kinds of things, I wish I could do this more often.  It’s a pretty good app for kids, but I do wish they could’ve put more suggestions about how kids could REALLY care for the world, instead of it being about how many animals they could rhyme in a sentence.

LEGO Dimensions: The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack

So apparently some of the older LEGO Dimensions sets are now available at dollar stores and Five and Below shops and such.  I’ve seen a few myself, but none that I had to spend money on.  But an online friend who lives in California found some and bought them and offered to send them to me.  He didn’t even ask for money, he just said for me to review them, so that’s what I did!  I won’t tell you who sent them to me, but you can probably guess who it is, as they are big fans of LEGO games and toys, too.

Anyway, the first pack I reviewed was The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack.  I’m not a fan of The Wizard of Oz, but I do have lots of respect for it.  There are tons of books, and they seem interesting.  The 1930’s movie, which this LEGO set is based on, was shown on TV every year around Easter when I was little, and I always made a point to watch it.  Keep in mind this was before VCRs and DVDs and Netflix, so it seemed more special to make a point to watch it back then.  I’ve seen the movie recently and while the special effects and dialogue seem cheesy now, this was pretty amazing stuff for back then so I still have respect for it.  In the 80’s, Disney made a movie called Return to Oz, and while I didn’t see it in theaters, I did rent it and watched it twice in a row as a kid and loved it (for some reason).  A few years ago, Disney made another movie called Oz: The Great and Powerful, but I didn’t like that one as much because it felt like Green Screen: The Movie.  I love Wizard of Oz parodies, especially the Futurama one.  Heck, I’ve even reviewed a few Wizard of Oz games.  One of which was an interesting RPG on the DS!  So I was glad to get The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack for LEGO Dimensions.

LEGO Dimensions: Scooby Doo Team Pack

So the next in line to review in the batch of dollar store LEGO Dimensions sets is the Scooby Doo Team Pack.  This is another franchise that I’m not a big fan of, but I still have respect for it.  Scooby Doo has been popular since before I was born, and it continued its popularity when I was a kid, and even today!  I watched it a lot as a kid, simply because kids will watch anything.  I will say there is one cartoon Scooby Doo movie that I really do like, and that’s Scooby Doo on Zombie Island.  Seriously, it’s awesome.  I’m also glad I got to meet the original voice of Scooby Doo, before he passed away (Don Messick).  He also did the voices for Scrappy Doo, Boo Boo, Muttley, Papa Smurf, and many more!  Anyway, so even though I’m not as much of a fan, I was mildly curious about the LEGO Dimensions set, so I’m glad I got it!

LEGO Dimensions: Doctor Who Level Pack

So the last in the batch of dollar store LEGO Dimension sets is the Doctor Who Level Pack.  The Doctor Who set is the one I actually wanted the most.   “Oh wow, Cary, you’re a Doctor Who fan?” you may be thinking.  Nope, absolutely not.  I know next to nothing about the franchise.  But my brother Jeff’s girlfriend loves Doctor Who, so when this set came out, my original plan was to buy it so they could come over and have fun building and playing the level.  But around that time, I lost my last job, so I went into “money saving mode” and didn’t buy it.  So I’m glad I was able to get it after all so they could enjoy it.  Anyway, two warnings before I start the review.  Like I said earlier, I know next to nothing about Doctor Who, so if I seem uninformed in my review, that’s why.  But not knowing about something has never stopped me from writing about it before.  And the other warning is that there may be an accidental spoiler alert here and there, so please go easy on me, Doctor Who fans.

One thing I learned from this Level Pack is that there is more than one Doctor Who.  Twelve in fact.  So Doctor Who fans, any speculation on what the thirteenth one will be like?  Well I’ve got a proposal for you.  I bet I could be a great thirteenth Doctor!  Yeah!  I could fly in a purple port-a-potty and fight annoying British robots while riding on a robot dog with pew-pew-pew lasers that come out of his eyes!  Plus, I’ve played lots of Chrono Trigger and watched Back to the Future so many times that I’m probably an expert on time travel.  So how about it, BBC?  What say you, Doctor Who fans?

88 Heroes (PS4)

This is a 2-D platformer where you get 88 different heroes to finish levels to save the day.  Each hero acts as one of your ‘lives’ and every one is different.  Most control like classic video game characters.  There’s one with a portal gun, one that controls like a Track & Field star, and even a dinosaur that blows bubbles out his butt similar to the dinos in Bubble Bobble.  It’s a bit frustrating when you get a hero who has terrible controls and you can’t get past a level with that one, but this is one of those ‘just for laughs’ games where you just enjoy the silliness and not worry so much about beating or perfecting it.

Chime Sharp (PS4)

And last is this puzzle game with music elements.  Kind of reminds me of a cross between Loopz on the NES and Lumines.  I reviewed a version of it a few years ago on the PS3 as well.  It’s all right, but kind of hard.

Happy Easter!

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading my reviews and posting comments!  I really appreciate it.  Let me know what fun stuff you’re doing this Easter!  Later!  --Cary

Love those Breath of the Wild amiibos. I just got Chibi-Robo today.

I hope I get to paint some eggs this weekend, but they'll probably already be painted by the time I get to my sister's place.

Chibi-Robo is awesome!  Did you just get the amiibo or the game that came with it?

Well you're always welcome to come over and decorate Pokemon Easter Eggs at my house on Sunday. :)

And to answer your question from my review, I am playing Zelda on the Switch.  Only noticed a framerate issue once, but I don't think it affected the gameplay too much.  That stuff really doesn't bother me too much unless the framerate is Sonic Boom bad.  Thanks for reading!

I just got the amiibo. Would love to try the game sometime.

I would totally come over to paint eggs if I wasn't 1,600 miles away. Art projects rule! Best way to celebrate a holiday in my opinion.

The game that came with the Chibi-Robo amiibo was called Chibi Robo: Zip Lash.  It was a 2-D platformer.  Many reviewers panned it, but I enjoyed it for what it was.  However, it still wasn't as good as the first few games.  So if you want to play a really good Chibi Robo game, I recommend either the first one on GameCube or Park Patrol on DS.

Those first two sound interesting. I vaguely remember them when they came out, but I didn't try them.

All the Chibi Robo games are interesting, but the first two are the best.

My mom teaches middle school and it's insane how the Pokemon craze has just started all over again. I wonder if her kids have those Easter eggs.

There's actually been a few Wizard of Oz games come out fairly recently.  Well, in the past ten years recently.  A couple of years ago I reviewed a 3DS puzzle game that was based on a crappy CG Wizard of Oz movie that came out a while back.  And before that, I reviewed an interesting DS game from XSEED that was a Wizard of Oz RPG!  Thanks for reading!
