Summer Reading List Suggestions

GoAztecs brought up on his blog that he was starting to read books again more frequently (either way, I haven't even so much as listened to an audiobook, and I believe he has at least done that), and it led me to remember that I myself have no more emails or textbooks to read after next week.

So I might as well fill the void with some good books.

Taking any and all suggestions except self-help stuff. I was on that kick last year and I think I've had my fill; plus, the Internet pretty much has me covered there.

So. Whatcha got?

Allegories. Thinly veiled political opinions narrated as hero journeys. Dark shit.

Well I read manga, scifi and fantasy, paranormal, YA fantasy, and some mysteries. Anything you might wanna read of? If so I can suggest a few books.

Honestly just list whatever you like most. I was somewhat joking with Snee.

I like classic lit, YA, and I want to read a mystery.

Sounds like you might be a Philip K. Dick fan.

Who you calling a Philip K. Dick?!

What's he write? I know I've read the name plenty of times before, but can't remember.

Well, I've only read his "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" story which became the film Blade Runner. I guess I mention him because his "Man in the High Castle" just became a TV show. That one seems heavily political and dark.

Oooohhhh thanks for reminding me of that.

I actually have been meaning to watch both that movie and that show. I'll still check out the book if I like Blade Runner.

I don't think he's done enough drugs....

Think Yourself Thin and Turn that Frown Upside Down! Just kidding.

I've been rereading Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker Trilogy (of five books). Those are perennial favorites of mine.

I actually could use those tbh, it's just that there's so much literature on it on the interwebs, why read a book split into chapters roughly the size of any articles I may come across? Lol

Hitchkiher's Guide to the Galaxy? If it is indeed the same series, I know a lot of references, but never actually read those. Or maybe I only know the answer to the universe reference ...

Yeah, those are the ones I'm talking about. I read all of those when I was about 12, even though they aren't really meant for kids. I even had the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure game made by Infocom.

Cool. That's one I think I'd like, so thanks for the suggestion!

Hey I got a mention! As for books, I don't know the last one I "read" (audiobook) is The Onion's Our Dumb World. It just makes fun of various countries and their history. I also got a couple of Zane Grey Westerns from LibriVox.org which is the public domain stuff.

Ooohhh I forgot the Onion had a book. I'll check that out.

I'd suggest something, but I'm more into reading in RPGs rather then books. I dunno, I just like the fact that I have an impact on the game rather then going along a pre-chosen path for a story. I feel the same about movies. I do however want to read all the Star Wars books that are cannon since they tell a lot more of the story.

I'm kind of the opposite. I like branching storylines for some games, but I tend to prefer a clearly defined story and objectives. Sometimes I'll make the "wrong" choice in certain games and feel I was cheated out of a better experience. I know cheated isn't the right word, but I like to know I got the best version of a story possible.

Now I have yet to play ME or KOTOR and wouldn't mind so much in those games, since the focus is so heavy on choices. But I find some games punish you for odd reasons based on choices that seemed more or less irrelevant at the time ...
