I finally finished The Last of Us

I've been playing this game for over a week. An interesting thing about playing the game this way, in short bits or 1 chapter or section per day is that it really felt like a very long journey. I felt emotionally drained and exhausted when I got to the finish line and the ending still has my head spinning. Haven't really gotten around to formulating a final opinion on the whole thing. The ending made me kind of angry because it made me feel like all the hard work was for nothing. As much as I tried to stealth through a lot of it, I didn't like the way the game forced me into combat and in the end I felt more like a killer as in any other game and the whole thing reminded me more of Spec Ops the Line, with the twist ending. That game criticized you for being a killer where the game didn't really let you opt out of combat, and the same thing happens at the end of TLOU, so it felt cheap to me. This is a first impression. I have to bake on it some more and maybe give a more thorough explanation later, but as of now I think the game was just okay, while I really loved the world, mood and atmosphere. Also, those clicker zombies didn't bother me as much as most people. I thought they were very interesting challenges and refreshing to zombie type games. Might try a new game +, maybe a replay will help me focus thoughts more.

It reminded me of a reimagining of Resident Evil 3 actually, which is a very linear action game more combat focused than puzzle solving, but it gets the escape from the city feel realistic which was cool! If they ever do a RE3 remake, I'd like capcom to pay attention to TLOU. If they made realistic looking Racoon City where you had to escape from Nemesis, with the clock tower and downtown set pieces, it would be awesome.

I was watching a video analysis half way through the game which described the 3rd and 4th part as being shorter than the beginning, but it took me a while to get through those parts and didn't seem short at all so it might have affected my perception of time to complete negatively and felt like it dragged on longer than it should have. A vacuum is best I guess, but the game came out a long time ago and I was surprised how little I knew of this games existence.

What are your final thoughts of TLOU? Still haven't made up mine.

I also thought it was just ok, but wasn't a fan of certain clicker sections. Sometimes they were refreshing, but oftentimes I just got annoyed by how sensitive they were to noise. Sometimes it was super-tense and sometimes it Just irritated me after too many tries. I think it was a great attempt at what they were going for though; that can't be an easy thing to balance.

I got through in in about a week, I think, and it definitely dragged in parts. It's good to have that much game, but some parts were more interesting than others, for sure. Sometimes though, I can't tell if I'm annoyed because the game is losing luster or it's really more that I'm annoyed because I'm merely trying to knock this narrative-driven game off mount backlog. I think TLoU did enough to hold my attention, but remember certain sections being too long.

As for the ending, I'm not sure I'd have made the same choice. You're given a similar one in Life is Strange, and I chose the opposite. In fairness, there are some key differences in the latter that push you that direction, so it's not the exact same thing; just the same general concept.

Honestly, as mixed as my opinions are on this game, I want togo back and play New Game + now. First, I'm going to finish Horizon though. I want to finish that before DLC comes in fall. It was my most anticipated game of this year and I barely touched it.

You seem to have had a similar experience to mine. I wasn't a big fan of the gameplay. The game decides when its wanting to be stealth or action for you so I get the feeling of, "then why did I stealth through all this just to trigger an action event demanding combat"? My only real problem with the clickers is that they seem to have had one-hit kills if they ever got close to you which is what annoyed me. The arcade cover based shootouts is what I didn't like, and what I don't like about Uncharted games either. I mainly got through it to finish the story, which I thought was worth finishing, but now that I have a better picture of the whole thing, I can see it for what it is, a struggle to survive and I felt that struggle albeit intentionally bad mechanics or not. It could have been edited down for time also. Way too many shootouts for my liking, especially in a survival themed story where you aren't encouraged to use ammo. I need a break before new game plus.

To be honest, as someone who's never been a huge fan of stealth sections, I didn't mind cover shooting. I actually love the new Tomb Raider games that have plenty. Everything else though, I more or less agree and can get burnt out on cover shooting, but don't dislike it as a rule.

I remember being excited by the melee combat in the early trailers for the game. I have a copy of the game now but haven't touched it yet.

Did you just have too much backlog games to get to it? Curious why you put it off so long? I think I probably didnt have money when it launched and then I forgot about it.

I wasn't really into a zombie-like story at the time, but so many people raved about it, I kept thinking about it. Then I got a free copy from a friend of mine who doesn't have a PS3 anymore. So now I have it, and there it sits on my shelf with the rest of the backlog. I just need more time.

I actually loved that they didn't give you a choice at the end. Yeah, they forced you to do something messed up, but the game was way too character focused to allow you to make a choice at the end. It's Joel's choice and I respected it out of that. Actually my favorite ending in any game. Personally I loved the combat, felt it did a really good job of blending stealth, action and survival mechanics. One of the few games that made getting caught in stealth fun and I respect it for that. Moments where I had to improvise after getting caught were by far my favorite in the game.

I still haven't played it, but one of my friends loves the game and always tries to get me to play it. If I did play it I would take the same approach you did and give it a slow burn, and not try to play through chunks of the game.

There are certain games that have stealth parts, that sometimes let you run and gun, but I generally try to stealth, but I wont reload saves for perfect plays or anything-- I just push forward. These types of scenarios give me stress, which I enjoy, but I get overwhelmed if I try to play alot of it at once-- too much stress. Having to deal with waves of enemies in a tower defense or turret situation also gives me stress and this game has a balance of both. I enjoyed the slow points where you just wander and explore empty houses in neighborhoods and poke around rooms and stuff, and I like the characters and their story enough to push forward, but it did feel overwhelming at times. I'm having a similar feeling about Metro Last Light Redux, which also has stealth sections and enemy waves, but over all I like the story and exploring the tunnels because of atmosphere. I enjoy these games, but slow burn is best for me.
