I have not felt the urge to throw a controller so far...
or in this case a game system until Fire Emblem Awakening. I read about it's difficulty, even the easy or casual mode being difficult, but sometimes the challenge is bordering on ridiculous. It only takes one misstep and your 30+ min game is over. You can have a nearly perfect play through but then something will come up and around your defense and have a one hit kill ending the entire game. Unlike Etrian Odyssey, where I am used to death and reloading, FE:A makes me want to chuck the little handheld system against the wall and then take a hammer to it. It's vicious!

Update 1: There is a slight probabilty that the problem might be just that I terribly suck at this game.

Update 2: I just received some new Fire Emblem themed stationary along with a personal not from Narihiro the producer in Swap Note which is really awesome, but it doesn't change anything. But it does look awesome. Also got a sweet Lego City stationary in Swap Note. You all should update Swap Note.

Gah, don't tell me that! I just bought it and a 3DS two days ago!

Congrats on the purchase. It is my fav system currently. Have you heard of a game called Fire Emblem Awakening? Yeah. Me too.

Yeah I have no interest in Fire Emblem.  Doesn't sound like fun.

It's a little abusive. I don't know that you can say these games are fun like a mario game "fun". They are supposed to be hard, but good lord!

This a situation like this in Ogre Battle LCT. Pretty much you have a choice of trying to save a young woman but instead of retreating and using every turn to approach my army on the other side of the field, she keeps attacking the enemy forces alone as if she's on a suicide mission! I'm about to decide she's "too dumb to save" and go about the mission the other way!

I don't care about my party characters. To hell with them. But if your main characters die in battle it's game over. So you'll be kicking ass, being all strategic 'n shit, then the game will suddenly kick you in the crotch and punch you in the face at the same time in a not so subtle fuck you gesture.

yea i know exactly what part in TO your talking about to its as if shes on meth and things she can defeat anything lol I remember a couple of levels in FFT thatnwere like that to and wont even attemt to get close to you so you can at least heal them lol!!! and whith that said your scaring me away from fire emblem lol.

Luckily, in TO:LCT you can revive your mates. However, on this mission I was on I'd lose if said female warrior would die. It would be fine if she tried retreating towards my army so I could help her but she just keeps attacking the enemy as if she has no more sense left in her skull!

Glad there's someone out there with sympathy pains who knows what I'm talking about. lol. She really does act like a jihadist hyped up on meth! I wish she would value her life more as opposed to throwing it away. (Resulting in a "game over" for me)

I'll be playing Dark Souls soon, so I'm sure I'll be in the same boat lol. No matter how hard it is, you gotta resist that urge man! 3DS systems are expensive!

Dying makes you stronger in Dark Souls, as a player anyway. Not so much here. Just reload and try again, or suck it up and move on.

I haven't played that one since it's pretty rare finding it in stores, but yeah I feel your pain. In SSB Melee I broke 2 controllers out of rage in the hardest mode and I broke 3 controllers in F-Zero GX on Master mode. The latter is ridiculously hard in Master Mode but out of all the systems, the Gamecube was my most expensive since I had to rebuy controllers for it. Well the good news is that I've beaten the whole game with all the characters on Master Mode, then did it again years later just for the heck of it, and I came back all wiser but still hard. To me, that game is my Demon/Dark Souls or Fire Emblem. I want to play Fire Emblem Awakening just out of curiosity even though I know those games can dish out punishment.

It's funny because I don't have a problem playing Demon's Souls or even Tactics games in general which is what FE:A resembles more, but this game is defeating me.Frown

Darksouls can make you sooooo mad but pateints is the key to Darksouls never ever rush for anything unless its running from a knight with a hammer bigger then he is lol.

And this is why I haven't play a Fire Emblem game yet. I'm sure I will, sometime, but for now I'll just keep putting it off...

I saw your update, but do you consider that the game has cheap difficulty or just that is very hard?

asrealasitgets

04/19/2013 at 10:30 PM

The way I see it, the game moves along quickly like a checkers game, but also has a bit of a paper-rock-scissors aspect to attacking, meaning you can face an enemy and then have a chance your weopon sort of miss or just be weak, whearas the enemy will tear you apart with one hit. Unless you really understand the movements, strengths and weaknesses of all the combinations the game will be difficult. Taking time to learn the game system might benefit you, but then there are times where one enemy will just make a bee line for your main character and one-shot-kill. The game is simple in theory, but difficult in execution, from my point of view anyway.

I think I rented the one for the Gamecube way back when. After tinkering around in the first battle, and getting badly wiped out I decided it just was not my style. I may have to give the series another try one of these days.

asrealasitgets

04/21/2013 at 02:15 PM

"Not my style."

The game is a bit different from typical tactics games. There is no bonus for attacking from the side or from behind an enemy. There is no bonus for using terrain, or the terrain doesn't make use of high or low ground. It's really a lot like checkers in theory but like chess in practice. One wrong move and "checkmate". I'm about half way through and plan on finishing it. Partnering up and studying the enemy weapons and surveying the map before battle helps a lot. It's a good game really, just not one I'm used to.

Yeah sometimes I get used to certain "formulas" and when you play a game that throws that out the window it can make the game feel backward or overly intimidating. But its just a matter of learning the game. I'm sure if I had spent more time with it I would have gotten into it eventually.

A bit like jumping into the deep end of the pool.

I remember FF Tactics being a similar "one screw up and it's over" kind of thing. Very similar kind of games and FFT is pretty well known for its difficulty.

asrealasitgets

04/21/2013 at 02:18 PM

I don't think that enemy armies show up half way through the battle to attack you from behind in FFT. That was a surprise in FEA. I'm moving forward with my weak characters in the back when an enemy army shows up from behind. Now I have enemies on two fronts, and my weak squishies are in the back of course.

Yep, Awakening can be pretty brutal. So much so that thus far I've been unable to complete more than a couple of battles per session. At that point I'm exhausted and have to let it rest for a while. I'm playing Soul Hackers right now, I'll go back to FE later.

asrealasitgets

04/21/2013 at 02:19 PM

Soul Hackers? There's a game that sounds like throwing against a wall. Maybe later.

Games that made me want to throw a controller. Oddly Madden was one of them when I used to play it. I would also say Tekken 5 and 6's bosses. I really want that Fire Emblem game. i would have had it already if Amazon didn't sale it more expensive through a different outlet.

asrealasitgets

04/21/2013 at 02:22 PM

I got Fire Emblem used for $35 at gamestop and also got a discount with a membership card so it was kind of a bargain really. It is a worthy full on game that I play a lot so I would say it's worth it's original price. You should try out the demo first. The game is like the demo just with more maps and characters.

I've been there, man. Not with a game like this (I suck at them anyway), but I have been there. But like Aboboisdaman said, you gotta resist that expensive urge. lol

I know where you're coming from bud. I love the game though (I'm a sucker for difficult games!), and it took me a while to get the hang of.

I'm not sure if it's still available or not, but there was a free DLC whenever it came out. I downloaded it and played the battle over and over and levelled up all of my characters significantly and it helped a lot. It took a lot of time, but it was well worth it.

ALSO...
Make sure to 'join' characters during battles. I usually found that if I took a powerhouse-character and synced them with a Pegasus Knight, I would have a pretty powerful character that could traverse great distances and deal a decent amount of damage.

What threw me off was when enemy units show up half way through the battle and ambush you from behind. I was like what the hell? I don't remember this being the case in other strategy games. Of course my weak characters were in the back and were slaughtered.

I now press X at start of every battle to view enemy movement and pair everyone up with lots of health items. I don't have that DLC for endless leveling up. I've seen this posted everywhere "level everyone up" I guess I have to drop money into DLC. I'm on Chapter 9. How far are you and are you buying DLC?

I got the game the day it was released and that's always whenever I got the DLC. It must have just been day-one DLC or something along those lines.

And I'm not quite sure for of where I left off. I've honestly been so busy with Monster Hunter 3 that I haven't gone back to Fire Emblem yet.

asrealasitgets

04/23/2013 at 03:32 PM

In FE I'm just leveling up during side mission battles or map battles. There is like 24 DLC packs now, not sure which is the right one to download. I'm about half way through the game I think.

Monster Hunter takes me away from alot of other things too. It's good.

Some game tips:

  1. I’m not a vetaran Fire Emblem player, but I have managed to get to CH 11 and complete side quests and map battles. Some tips that helped me.

Do partner up everyone. Everyone! You might get less movement, but it’s safer and you have better chances to survive if you get ambushed.

Carry two weapons: one ranged weapon and one close range weapon. Sometimes you will be within one square of attacking enemy and you can shorten the gap with a ranged weapon.

Do build relationships with partners. They will add useful buffs and defense during fights.

Press X before every battle and view reach of enemy attack range. Cycle through units both yours and enemies with L and R buttons.

Try to have fun and take in the music and story.
