July-Ever Oasis 3DS

I remember when EO was first announced. I was super excited because to me it seemed like a new little interesting title to bring to the 3DS. Upon finishing it I have found that it definitly has its own little charm and while it can be beat quite quickly it might just be the "short" RPG all of us who play 80 to 100 hour long games need. It only took 23 Hrs to clear the main game, this of course doesnt include having the Oasis completely leveled nor having all possible characters living there. I had around 30+ at the last story part and was still able to take on the final boss okay. I would say that fully completeing the game would probably take 30-40 Hrs.

The story begins with your seedling living in their older brothers Oasis. Everything is happy and cheery until Chaos comes to destroy everything because happiness makes it cringe. The older brother uses his wind magic and saves the younger sibling. Upon landing they meet Esna, the water spirit. Together they create a Oasis and the journey to make the biggest and strongest begins.

As chief of the Oasis your biggest job is keeping everyone who plants their bottom there happy, there is a benefit to this. This mostly ranges from keeping other seedlings bloom booths stocked or by sending out parties to scavenge materials/kill monsters. The 2 party members you take with you also gain happiness from journeying along with you, also be noted that if you take a seedling that has a bloom booth they wont get sales that day. Whenever someone comes to the Oasis you normally have a task or even 4 to complete before they will agree to settle. Alot of them are simple from needing a certain material to wanting a particular bloom booth. Their demands dont get too crazy. The happier the Oasis and the more health you will go into the field with. Leveling up alone does not get you alot, especially in health.

Equipment is gained from either crafting, merchants, or out in dungeons. Seedlings are the only characters you can change equipment. The equipment of non seedlings is already decided and changes as they level up. I mostly used Muira (Drauk) and Sol (Lagora) so the nice thing I didnt have to worry too much about equipment a ton but that doesnt mean I didnt have to use other characters. This game will make you have to switch out your party quite a bit. Each character has a special skill that they can do. These skills are used from puzzles to proceeding further in dungeons. If there is a negative to this title Id say the amount of switching and returning to the Oasis there is. It seems like you get further in a particular area of the desert or dungeon and oh shit I need another character for this skill, well time to teleport back. It does get annoying on occasion but its also something I was willing to overlook since I enjoyed the rest of the game enough.

Difficulty wise, its just right. The dungeons puzzles arent terribly challenging and not long either. They go by pretty quick, they maybe take 5 to 10 mins to complete. The bosses werent hard except, the final boss. He did get difficult by the second half of the fight. I thought I wasnt gonna win at one point but I luckily pulled it off. Good advice: Take characters or equipment that Chaos is weak to. Sol was one of my regulars for that very reason.

What I loved most was the story and the environments. you could tell they really put alot of effort into both. The desert wasnt boring and had a different feel to each area. The dungeons might of been simple but were unqiue. The forest one is my favorite, hands down. I loved forest/plant look to it and even though sadly it was this dying place of vegatation it was beautiful.

Overall I love this game, I might just replay it once in awhile. I know this review might make come off snarky as hell but I really did enjoy this game. The ending broke my heart. All I will say there. I dont know if a sequel will happen but I kinda hope they do consider keeping it around.

Thank you for reading, Lets hope I keep this momentum in August.

I have this on my rental list. The more I hear, the more I like. I wasn't thrilled with the graphics I saw in the trailer, but your description of the forest dungeon has me interested. I heard a good review of it on one of IGN's podcasts the other week too.

The visuals look really good in game. Atleast they looked good to me. I liked that even though its desert themed it had a lot of color to it.

I've been curious about this. Some places gave it great reviews, and some not so great. But I am curious. I'll probably pick it up during a Switch drought. Right now I just have Zelda, but I'm gonna buy Mario Kart and Setsuna in a few weeks.

It got mixed reaction but I think the big thing people disliked was having to change party members quite a bit which is understandable but I still enjoyed the game. It has flaws but to me the good was def better than that bad.

I bought Setsuna. I like it... but I do feel it's a bit too traditional and in awe of its inspirations. I wish JRPG's would take it to the next level.

You saying that the game is short makes me want it even more.  I'm going to ask for it for my birthday, I think.

I understand. I was so happy it was short. I have played several long 80-100+ hour games this year.

A short game would be lovely. I don't believe I will ever finish Horizon Zero Dawn. lol

You can finish it! You can do it! What are you gonna do about the DLC?
