MGS3 Speedrun -3 Hours

In my previous post Halochief90 made a comment that  he thought it took around  20 hours to finish MGS3. I guess if you were to unlock everything and shoot all the Keratons on one playthrough, I'm sure it would take some time.

My previous playthrough of MGS3 on normal was 6 hours and 12 minutes. And that was without trying to shoot all the Keratons or collect all the plants and animals.

Tonight I decided to see just how fast I could finish MGS3. A speedrun if you will. I decided to play my

Japanese Version MGS3

*all photos courtesy of GH*

I played on Very Easy. I did not shoot any Keratons or try to capture any plants or animals. I defeated all Bosses Non-lethal except for The End, which I skipped that battle because it takes at least 45 minutes.  And that isnt a cheat code or glitch. You do not have to Battle The End.

I saved 5 times only because I was worried I would get called away from playing. So after all was said and done I beat MGS 3 in

2 Hours and 49 minutes

I beat the Boss non-lethal.

The Boss

Beating a Boss non-lethal means that you drain their stamina and then you recieve their Camo. I found it is actually faster to beat some of the Bosses non-lethal. It seems the Tranq gun drains their stamina faster than a lethal gun kills them.  I recieved the Snake Camo for beating the Boss non-lethal.

Most of the credits were in Japanese except where they showed an English spelling of a name

Harry Gregson- Williams

I think if I ever get the Stealth camo I can beat that time. But Im not going to try anytime soon.

Im moving on from MGS3 and Im going to play another MGS game. Maybe Peace Walker.

Can you believe I've never beaten Peace Walker. heck, I dont think I've even played but a few levels of the game. So I think Peace Walker will be next.

But no speedrun....I'm tired!   hahahahah

Peace Walker is a fantastic game! Given how much you love MGS I think your really gonna enjoy it. Just thinking about it has me itching to replay it lol. There was only one thing I didn't like about PW and it involved a QTE that had you spamming the triangle button or something. I had to get my brother to do it for me. Embarassed

I believe the button-mashing sequence is a singular experience, as if the QTE's had their own boss battle. I thought the rest were pretty simple, but they didn't really add much to the game, except in a few instances (like the one before that button-mash), making them feel at worst like poorly wielded modern influence.

Aaron: I hate  QTE. They are my achilles Heel of video gaming. I can  not do them. I may just replay MGS3 on the PS2 instead.

Congrats on that speed run, that is highly impressive. I still cannot imagine getting through it that quickly. Peace Walker is one of the few MGS titles I've yet to play. Might be next on the horizon for me,too.

Wayde: Thanks, I've played it so many times I know the patrol routes of the guards.  It's an awesome game for sure.  I might replay it on the PS2 now?  hahahaha

Haha to be fair, I don't think that time stamp at the end of the game actually includes cut-scenes and codecs. That at least adds another 8-10 hours! I still think a first run-through on Normal will take most people around 20 hours!

That's a pretty good speed run though. It took me about the same time to speed-run Ico and that is one of the shortest games I've played!

Halo:  I think the time stamp at the end does include all I did, which I skipped all the cutscenes and codecs. I agree 100%, if you were to play on Normal, watch all the cutscenes, listen to all the important codecs and find all the plants and animals and shoot all the Keratons, and beat all the Bosses, especially non-lethal, it would easy be a 20 hour game.

"Why do they keep exploding?!!!"

MGS3 has to be my favorite in the series. I've always hated feeling rushed in games, but your post has me thinking...a speed run of The End. Nothing else, just how long it would take to finish him off. A non-lethal run against him (without the Mosin-Nagant?) would be even more interesting.

If you do ever play thru it again, try pulling a hold-up (stick up?) on The End. If you've done this already I'd be interested in how his reward affected your playthrough (or what you relied on in general).

Peace Walker is lot of fun from the collectables/meta-game side of my mind, but it definately lacks some of the personality that makes a true modern MG title (no unique bosses is a no-no). With that said its probably my 2nd favorite MG title, for very different reasons than Snake Eater.

Atlus*Aspect:  I have held up the End using the EZ gun and it seem to take me forever! That is why I skipped his battle altogether.  In MGS3 Subsistence on the PS2 you can do just Boss Battles. And if Im not mistaken one does not allow the map or even the Mic Phone...I'm not sure but it isnt easy!

Well GH, I'm impressed.

How do you get Stealth Camo though?

GrayHaired

Yargz:  thanks. To get the Stealth camo you have to either, finish the game without any alerts, or shoot all the 64 Keratons.  Now the Keraton count will carry over from one game to the next. If I shoot 40 on one playthrough then I need only shoot the other 24 on the next playthrough.

Impressive time. Speaking of Peace Walker, thats the only MGS game I haven't finished either. Similar to you, I played the first few levels but it didn't grab my attention. Maybe someday I'll go back but I think I want to replay MGS2 and 4 first. I'm currently about half way through 2

TheMart:  for some reason PW didnt grab my attention either at first and Im having a hard time getting excited about it, I will play it eventually and Im sure I will like it. I loved Portable Opps!

transmet:  I did too, have trouble with the controls, Heck, I even accidently turned the psp off a few times. I coudnt wait for the HD PS3 release of PW and yet I still have barely touched it.

3 hours? Pretty remarkable all things considered. It would be cool if defeating all the bosses non lethally got you a different ending movie. Still, even having the choice for non lethal combat is pretty neat!
