Well it looks like my time with Odyssey is finished

At 73 Stars I made the mistake of returning to the Lost Kingdom and Klepto the bird stole my hat a second time. This time he flew to a place that is impossible for Mario to reach without Cappy. At least for me.

The pillar is surrounded by the poison purple stuff and too high for Mario to jump on. There's no way to abort the mission so I guess my game ends here.

No mention of this on any site. :(

dude, there has to be a way around this. Nintendo wouldn't include a bug like this in their game.

Yep, that's what I thought but there are no mentions of it on the internet.

I found one instance of someone saying "I went back to the lost Island and Klepto stole my cap again" I thought great this will be my answer, but there was only one reply and it was some idiot who didn't read the post responding with how you do it the first time.

I might have to recreate this glitch in my game to see if I can fix it. I just know Nintendo wouldn't miss a glitch like this.

Before you recreate use Options > Data Management and save your game to another slot. By default the game only ever uses one save slot even though there are multiples.

That way you can use the same method to load the older file, I didn't even know that method existed until it was too late.

It may not be a glitch. It may be that I'm just bad at the fancy jumps. If I try to long jump over the coins I go off the side of the cliff and trying to high jump onto the platform I just hit the wall and fall into the purple poison.

I'm not feeling well today, but I told Joaquim about it and he's gonna look into it when he's off work!

I've tried long jumps, jumps with a dive at the end which cause me to ground pound half the time instead of dive, running jumps and now I'm going to take a flying leap and shut it down. I wasted 2 hours trying to do this today. It's a the Swamp Hill checkpoint. Klepto lands on top platform of the stairs and ground pound platforms.

There are two of those caterpillar things on the left and a purple poison waterfall with coins over it to the right.

Like I say I think it's me being bad at jumping and given a choice I would have abandoned it and gone off somewhere else.

Wow this is terrible. I wonder if there is a way to backtrack or visit some other section of the world where this can be solved. If this is a glitch this is horrible but hopefully there is one of those solutions where you wait a day or explore and find a path.

Nope, once the mission starts that's the only thing you can do in this case. If I had older saves I could revert back to them but even though there's more than one save slot under data management it always saves to this first slot by default

Huh, that is unusual.  When I revisited the Lost Kingdom, I didn't see that bird at all.  If you can't find a solution on the Internet, my suggestion would be to write Nintendo a VERY DETAILED email to their customer service department about what you are experiencing.  In my 30 plus years of dealing with Nintendo's customer service, they've always been very helpful.  Even if they can't help you right away, your email may help them pinpoint a bug that they can then fix with a possible update patch.  I think this actually happened with one of their recent 3-D Zelda games.

Worse case scenario, if you have to start the game over again, it shouldn't take you too long to get back to where you were.  I was able to beat the main game in less than a week.  And that's playing rather casually, too.  For me, Odyssey was one of the easiest 3-D Mario titles to beat since Super Mario 3-D Land.  And after beating the game, the post game rewards are well worth it, especially if you're a Mario 64 fan.  I'd even say the game doesn't really even start until after you beat it.

It's likely just me not being able to pull off the fancy jumps where you need to press and hold various buttons and then press another one while in the air. I don't have the patience or coordination to do it.

Turns out as I suspected it's my inability to execute a long jump. I'd either make the jump and veer off the cliff to the right or not jump at all and ground pound the poison. I had my son do it and he made it over just fine. I knew what to do I just couldn't do it.

Still, it sucks that they gated it behind a massive difficulty spike like that.

That's fucked. Hopefully you work it out soon. I hate it when games do stuff like that.

I actually stopped playing today as well. I hope you were able to get past the part. Its a fun and worth at least beating the story. I got to atleast 500 moons and said I'm done. I just don't have the patience to get 999 moons. Some of the puzzles and challenges just got too fustrating.

I've had thinks like that happen to me in Ocarina of Time and the original Pokemon as a kid, but it could be I was a kid and just couldn't think of how to get out of certain situations.

Currently, I can't replay through Life is Strange: Before the Storm on my other save files because of a glitch where a puzzle is already solved from my previous save, but the game is asking me to solve the puzzle. Well, it's not really a puzzle so much as finding shit in a junkyard, but that's not the point. I really want to see what bad Chloe would do, too ...
