Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite: Team Marvel

Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is a fighting game featuring characters from Marvel comic and Capcom game universes.  Usually when I play a fighting game that has a lot of interesting characters in it, I’ll write a blog about them, so that’s what we’re going to do here.  We’ll start with the Marvel cast.  Keep in mind that I’m not a big comic book fan, so most of my knowledge of Marvel characters comes from the movies, Marvel vs. Capcom games, and the LEGO games.  So when I go over these characters, if you ARE a Marvel fan, please feel free to correct me on anything or provide any information or insight that you might like to share.

I wanted to talk a bit about the game first, though.  While I think I like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and 3 a bit more because of their more casual nature of play, it doesn’t mean that I think Infinite is bad.  It’s just different, and that’s not always a bad thing either.  The other Marvel vs. Capcom games had a more comic book feel to them, but this one feels more like the Marvel movies.  They even did a great job with the voices, as they sound almost like their film counterparts.  The story mode is also like one big movie (A real life Marvel vs. Capcom movie would be neat-o).  Story mode will take a few hours to beat in this game, but you don’t get to pick your fighters and there’s only one ending.  While I prefer the shorter story modes in 3 where you have all those wacky endings, again, they were just trying to be different here.

I think the only casualty with them being based on the movies is that Disney owns the rights to Marvel now, but they don’t own the rights to other Marvel movies like X-Men.  So you know what that means?  It means no Wolverine or other X-Men are in this game.  I read that Disney did that on purpose to not promote the other studios’ movies.  I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it sounds pretty likely.  I’m sure some fans would be pretty upset about this, as Wolverine was a staple in the other games.  It doesn’t bother me that much, although there was one X-Men character I enjoyed playing as in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.  She had purple hair and wore a purple outfit and shot out pink things.  I can’t remember her name, though.

One other major addition to Infinite is that you can equip Infinity Stones to help you fight.  They’re colored Skittles rocks that give special powers in the Marvel comics.  When the meter is half full, you can press the R1 button to activate a small power. For instance, the Time Stone will let you warp around the screen (handy for slow characters), and the Soul Stone will let you steal energy from your opponent (that’s the only way I was able to beat the last boss).  When the meter is all the way full, you can press both L1 and R1 buttons to make the whole screen change color and give you even more powers, but I’m not sure what they do.  I just liked spamming the Soul Stone.  Hey, what do you want from me? I stink at these kinds of games.  Anyway, let’s look at all the Marvel characters here.

Captain Marvel

I had never heard of this character until now.  I like how her name advertises the people who created her.  I’m guessing she’s Marvel’s equivalent of Wonder Woman?  Maybe?  I don’t know.  Anyway, she must’ve trained with Master Roshi and Goku because in the game she can go Super Saiyan.  And she must be really strong, too, because she can pick up people with one hand and toss them around like nothing.  I reviewed a Marvel pinball game a while back starring Ms. Marvel, who had stretchy powers, but I’m assuming that’s a different character?  No wonder why I don’t read comic books.  How do you keep up with all that stuff?

Iron Man

There’s been lots of Iron Man movies and he’s been in a lot of the Marvel vs. Capcom games, too, so I know at least a bit about him.  Like I said earlier, the voice actor they got for him was spot on with imitating how he sounds in the movies.

Captain America

Another guy with lots of movies so I know about him, too.  Anyone remember the old arcade game Captain America and the Avengers?  That was such a cheesy game, but I liked it anyway.  I also liked how they parodied Capt. America on Dexter’s Laboratory with Major Glory.

Howkeye

He’s just a guy who can shoot a bow and arrow well.  Doesn’t sound like a very exciting super hero to me, but what do I know?

Hulk

He’s a pretty well-known comic book hero, and he’s also been in most, if not all, of the Marvel fighting games from Capcom.  He has all his classic moves here, too.

Thor

Another character with lots of movies, so I know a fair amount about him.  I actually knew who he was a long time ago thanks to a stupid 80’s movie called Adventures in Babysitting.  Anyone remember that?  I just saw the new Thor Ragnarok movie, too.  I liked the Valkyrie character in that.  OK, I have to tell my stupid Thor joke.  Here goes.  One day, Thor leapt on his mighty steed and bellowed out, “I’m Thor!”  And then his horse turned around to him and said, “Well thit on the thaddle, thilly!”

Spider-Man

Everyone seems to like Spider-Man but I don’t really care much for him.  He annoys my head and I got kind of tired of his movies.  Haven’t even seen the last one yet.  He’s been in a lot of the Marvel fighting games and plays pretty much the same here.  One thing they did with his character model here is they made him super buff.  Well, I guess they did that with all the characters, but it just looks weird on Spider-Man.  He’s been eating his spinach!

Ultron

I know who he is because he was the bad guy in one of the movies.  Although I kept wanting to call him Voltron.  In the game, he fuses with Sigma from Mega Man X to become Ultron Sigma, and they use Infinity Stones to take over Marvel and Capcom universes and merge them together.  His final form is a giant Sigma head with Ultron coming out of the top.  Classic Capcom.

Gamora

Did you know I have a favorite Marvel character?  I didn’t for a long time, but now I do.  And it was Marvel vs. Capcom 3 that helped me decide that.  So who is my favorite character?  Mrs. Hulk!  Or Hulk Lady. She-Hulk?  Well it’s one of those three names.  I can’t remember.  So why is she my favorite?  Well, you know how I told you that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 had wacky story mode endings?  Well in hers, she’s in a courtroom with Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth.  And that’s why she’s my favorite!  You know how I like my Phoenix Wright games.  So I was sad that Hulk Woman was not in Infinite.  At first I thought this green lady was her, but she’s not.  She’s the other green lady who’s in Guardians of the Galaxy (I first thought she was She-Hulk in that movie, too).  In this game she wears a storm trooper outfit for some reason.

Doctor Strange

I rented this movie a few months ago.  If you see this movie, I hope you like kaleidoscopes.  He’s pretty much Super Harry Potter.  I keep wanting to call him Dr. Weird.

Rocket Raccoon

When he was first in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, nobody had heard of him, but the Guardians of the Galaxy movies have happened since then, so now’s he’s at the forefront.  I’d like him better if he wasn’t so mean.  In the game, he can call out Groot to help him fight as a special move, but since I suck at these games I can never pull it off.

Nova

I never heard of this guy until Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  According to my brothers, he’s supposedly a member of some super space police force or something.  I liked his ending in MvsC3 because he recruits all the different versions of Mega Man to be on the Nova Corps.

Thanos

He’s a big purple guy with a big chin and I think he was a bad guy in one of the Marvel movies, but I can’t remember which.  In the game he has lots of powerful zappy laser attacks, but he’s VERY slow.  You’ll definitely want to equip the Time Stone on him!

Ghost Rider

He’s got a flaming skull for a head and he rides a motorcycle.  I think that’s all you need to know.

Dormammu

Oh great, ANOTHER guy with a flaming head?  How am I supposed to tell him and Ghost Rider apart, Marvel?  At least this guy doesn’t ride a motorcycle.  Or does he?  Please tell me he doesn’t.  I’ll be in big trouble otherwise.

Non-Playable (?) Characters

There are a few Marvel characters in Story Mode that you can’t play as, at least not yet.  They may be DLC later, but I’m not sure.  But here they are.

Black Panther

At first in the Story Mode, I thought he was Batman, but then I remember that Batman isn’t a Marvel character.  I’m pretty sure this guy will be a DLC fighter, since there is a new movie about him coming up I think.  In the Story Mode, he hangs out with a lady character who wears samurai type armor.  I thought she was another Marvel character I didn’t know about, so I was racking my brain trying to figure out who she was.  Turns out she’s not a Marvel character at all!  You’ll just have to find out who she is when I write my Team Capcom blog next!

M.O.D.O.K.

He’s just a huge head with tiny little arms and legs sticking out.  He was playable in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  Not sure if he’ll be DLC here, but in one of the stages in Story Mode, he hangs out in the background and zaps lasers at you while you fight.  Kind of not very fair.

Death

In the Story Mode there is a lady character that everyone calls “Death” and she’s rather pale and wears a hooded cloak.  I looked up a character called Lady Death and thought that was her, but my brother Jeff said she wasn’t.  Then when we went to go to the Thor Ragnarok movie, there is another lady character called the Goddess of Death, and I asked Jeff if that was her and he said it wasn’t either.  Oh my gosh, Marvel, why must you be so confusing?

And that’s all for now!  In the comments section, let me know your favorite Marvel character.  Next time we’ll look at the Capcom fighters in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.  I promise I’ll know more about those guys!  --Cary

Captain Marvel is actually really complicated. Originally it was a character unrelated who's now owned by DC. He was a 10 year old boy who turned into a superhero when he yelled "Shazam" which is now what he's called. There was a lawsuit over Captain Marvel later for being too similar to Superman and the rights were dropped. Then when Marvel became and saw DC had the rights to Captain Marvel, they created a character named Mar-Vell who was their Captain Marvel. He saved Carol Danvers, who absorbed some powers from him and became Ms Marvel until 2012, when she took the mantle Captain Marvel. The current Ms Marvel you mentioned was a massive fangirl of Carol Danvers so she took the name when she got super powers of her own.

Oh wow.  Yeah I think this is why I have a hard time getting into comic books.

I didn't know much about Ultron or Nova until I played Disney Infinity. There Ultron says something I repeat often because it's funny, "I have beaten you in every conceivable way." Nova was a very versatile character in the game.

Dormammu is sort of Dr. Strange's nemesis, always causing him problems, in the comics. He definitely doesn't ride a motorcycle.

I like "Super Harry Potter" and "Dr. Weird". Dr. Weird should be a spinoff character that challenges Dr. Strange to magic duels every so often. Ha!

The only Disney Infinity game that I played was the first one.  It just didn't draw me in enough to get the others and collect figures.  Maybe if they made figures of charactes like Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Mabel from Gravity Falls, Launchpad McQuack, Darkwing Duck, etc., I might've been more into it.

I just got finished reviewing LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, so I've seen some of the same characters that were in the Capcom game, like Dormamamamamu or whatever his name is.

Darkwing Duck almost got made, I heard. I would've really loved that one.

I heard there was a voting contest where you could vote for the next Disney Infinity figures, and two of them were Darkwing Duck and Mabel from Gravity Falls.  I would've also liked to have seen Chip N Dale, as they are my favorite Disney characters.  Scrooge McDuck is my second favorite.  At least you could build his money bin in the first Infinity game.

Oh yea, the money bin. There was an achievement attached to that, so I did it.

I don't remember an achievement, but I do remember building it and going inside it.
