On 04/25/2013 at 11:04 AM by Chris Yarger

It’s finally here, and I’m really sorry about the delay!

I could go into detail about the recording and crap, but this is actually going to be a bit of a slow process so if there are any questions, feel free to ask! I’ll try to get a video or two our every week also, but it MAY get delayed since Summer is coming and B and I are going to be busy playing roller hockey and doing the usual summer-work!

And don’t’ mind the non-sense swearing, B and I had a few brews beforehand, lol

Anyways, enjoy!

Great video, you really tore through the Asylum. I remember the first time I went through there, it's a great beginning area and training ground for some of the basic concepts. The first character I ever made was a Pyromancer but it didn't last very long because I wasn't any good at the combat yet and the guy at the top of the Indiana Jones boulder trap staircase was chopping me down over and over. So I restarted as a Warrior and the heavier armor and higher vitality helped me survive more mistakes and get better with the shield and sword combat I wanted to do.

I look forward to seeing you go through Undead Burg, that's one of my favorite areas and it's the place where I started honing my combat timing and I learned how to do backstabs and counters there. Havel at the bottom of the stairs, Taurus Demon ambush, Dragon on the bridge, a couple Black Knights skulking around, Undead Burg is a lot of fun. I also first learned how to farm for souls at that bonfire under the bridge near where those firebombing guys are perched. I would kill the guys around the bonfire and use their souls to buy crap from the undead merchant nearby.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

And Undead Burg is a fantastic place. I actually farmed for a bit by that Fire whenever I first played through the game as well! But stay tuned man, more Shenanigans are on the way!

One of the main things that I still don't understand about the game after all this time is the parameter bonus lettering. When I get weapons I see the letters and can tell that they scale with those stats somehow but I never understood how much it's scaling and what the letters mean. There's A, B, C, D, E, and S somehow. Maybe there's more, but those are ones I remember. What do all those mean and how does an S fit in lol?

I actually explain this a bit in a later video. But basically it's a damage scaling for each stat according to the weapon, so for instance;

Let's say you have 2 Short Bows, one is normal Short Bow and the other is a Short Bow +3 (I think at +3 it scales from A to S).The regular SB has an A rating, and the SB+3 has an S rating, both for the Dex. stat.

Now if you were to upgrade you Dex per your next level up, the damage would increase with the A rating as maybe a 3% whereas the S would increase as maybe a 5%. So with that one Dex point, your normal SB may do an additional 3 damage per level whereas it would do an extra 5 damage if it were an S rated.

Do you understand what I'm trying to say or did I confuse you? It's hard to explain but it basically effects how items scale with a particular stat with E being the worst and S being the best.

That's makes more sense. I noticed earlier in the game that the bow I was using would go up 3 damage per level for quite a while because of likely some S scaling to DEX I would presume then. So it goes S, A, B, C, D, E? I created the cursed Greatsword of Artorias some time ago and saw that it has C scaling across the board, I bet that sword could be pretty powerful then right if you upgrade it all the way? I can't use it with my current build anytime soon since I only have 10/12 intelligence/faith and I need 18 of each to wield the sword properly and get full damage out of it. I'd like to be able to use that sword at some point though and see what it does.

That sword is actually quite incredible if you get your Str, Dex, Int, and Faith all up to 40!

Speaking of which, all stats slow after 40. For damage, it'll only increase 1 point in damage no matter what the scaling is.

You also stop gaining Stamina after 40 End.

I'm not sure why they did this, unless it was a way to prevent players from becoming TOO powerful...?

That sounds like a pretty awesome sword. I made it because it can do damage to the ghosts in New Londo, but once I took time to actually look at it I realized holy crap I bet this thing can pull some serious weight if you upgrade it and have the right stats. I do have that jagged sword that the ghosts themselves use in New Londo though, and I upgraded it all the way and it's crazy powerful! For now at least. I upgraded that little cursed ghost sword and it does like 230 some odd damage I think.

Another thing that I've been wondering lately in regards to your experiences is if your opinions of your armors change with subsequent playthroughs? The first question I should ask is how many playthrough have you done with a single character?

Did you have favorite armors in the first playthrough that became less and less useful in the second or third playthrough with the same character? I've been wondering because with my character I use light armors that I've upgraded. I have a variety of them that I use for different situations. I have a set of +10 Chain Mail that I use when I need pure physical defense. I have the Gold Black Hemmed set for when I go into Blighttown or into any fiery places with fire damage since it has great poison resistance and some fire resistance I think. I have the Crimson Set upgraded all the way for when I'm around curse damage enemies.

I bet that in NG+ my favorite armors will be less and less effective and I'll have to keep my skills and strategy sharp as ever. Which is really exciting, I'm actually looking forward to NG+ quite a bit because I want to be able to play with my seasoned character and all my goodies but be challenged again and feel similar to how Dark Souls felt the first time around.

You can actually upgrade Artorias' Sword so it is scaled with C's for Dex/Str and B's for Int/Faith. You have to use a Broken Sword though to do it.

My FIRST playthrough though, I used Havel's Armor and tanked my way through the game. Now I mostly use the Elite Knight set because all the pieces can upgrade to +15 and the poise/damage reduction is amazing all around. But depending on what character build I'm using is usually the decisive factor for my armor. My bow builds will use Light Armor so I can escape quicker, and anything that's closer range will normally use something heavier so I can absorb any damage.

And the most playthroughs I've done with a single character was 4. That was with my Katniss build. I used her to finish off all of my achievements Wink

Wow. One to two videos a week is a lot of work. DS was inspired by profanity. Being drunk while playing DS is an essential. Yeah fuck you letter typing in PS3!

Thanks for doing this. Should be enormously helpful to me once I start. That may be pretty soon as Wal Mart now has the game for 20 bucks! How can I resist such a great game?

FINALLY!!!! I have been waiting for this. I am really excited that you're starting them now. I just beat the game with my one character so I am going to try to do NG+ and get all the achievements. Just how you cleared the first part so fast is amazing.

I upgraded the Bandit Knife that you were talking about to +14 and holy crap. I went through Undead Burg backstabbing undead knights and it was doing over 800 damage per backstab. Isn't there a ring that allows you to do 20% extra backstab damage as well? I know there's the ring that helps you do more counter-attack damage, it's called the Hornet Ring I think. I rarely look through my rings, I just have several I use over and over for different scenarios but I have a ton of rings just piled up that I don't look at much.

I was on this guys youtube page where he breaks down Dark Souls lore and tries to explain characters and concepts, some of his stuff is featured across the Dark Souls Wiki as well. I loved hearing him talk about the children of Gwyn because there's a lot of interesting stuff going on between them. Apparently Gwyns daughter (the one who Gwyndolin is creating a illusion of) left Anor Londo and married a Lord of Flame named Flann. Who's Flann?!

I was also fascinated to hear about the different arguments as to why some people think Solaire is the firstborn of Gwyn and other people that think he can't be. There's good arguments on both sides. Dark Souls is amazing in how deliberate everything is and how every item description and little piece of lore explained in the game is very purposeful and carefully written by the designers. It allows various interpretations and lots of discussion.

I know!! That dagger is absolutely devastating with backstabs and ripostes! And it's even better with the Hornet Ring!

And I have now clue who Flann is, we're you watching EpicNameBro? I always watch his lore videos!

And I'm not entirely sure who the firstborn really is. People say Solaire, but I lean towards Andre oddly enough because of the concept art book (I explain it a bit further in a later video Wink)
