Avengers is a 1987 arcade game and, unlike 1941 that we looked at yesterday, it does not hold up very well. Avengers is a vertically-scrolling beat-'em-up that sees your character punching, kicking, and spin kicking a load of gangsters out of Paradise City, saving some hot kidnapped ladies in the process. Except it's not very fun. Your character moves like molasses in the dead of winter and there is really no need to use any attacks other than the kick. The enemy variety is poor and the bosses tend to be kind of cheap. There are some secrets to be found by kicking in the right doors ('cause all you're doing is kicking) but what's the point? This game is a historical curiosity at best.

I played this on one of my Capcom collections. It was quite fun to punch and kick everything but it did get kind of cheap and I would die a lot.

It's really not worth more than a single play through, if that

These kind of games I revisit from time to time to get like 20 minutes of fun, if that.

Is Spider-Man in it?

You're thinking, I believe, of the original Shinobi arcade game. This one wasn't nearly cool enough to steal superheroes for bosses lol

I wasn't thinking of anything, but it was called Avengers so that was my only point of reference for comment.

*google google* Okay, it was Revenge of Shinobi. This website has good comparison pics. "Interstingly, you don't fight ordinary bosses or bad guys, but famous characters from comic books or movies. You meet Rambo, the Terminator, Spider Man, Batman and Godzilla." They were changed in later releases for obvious legal reasons.

That's pretty great.

I thought it was interesting to have a beat 'em up with a top down view, but yeah, the game wasn't very good.

It was worth a try making one like this...I guess? But just once

boy, you don't see a lot of overhead vertically scrolling BEat Em Ups.  Never heard of this one. Weird concept.

It's best left forgotten...

I don't think the overhead view works well for beat em ups. What were they thinking???

I guess in a way it's following Commando but shooting from this perspective works much better than punching.
