I just posted a blog about my gaming in 2017. But what about the ones I couldn't get to?
Here's a list of games from 2017 I wanted to play, but couldn't get around to, in order of release based on this list: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/every-game-release-date-in-2017/1100-6446643/
I'm mildly interested in Hitman: The Complete First Season, only because Gameranx's Falcon keeps saying this episodic entry the best in the series and I've never played this series before. Want rating: demo or rental
I'm curious if I'd like Nioh, but comparisons to Dark Souls don't speak to me positively after my experience not getting past the first part of Bloodborne. Want rating: demo or rental
Night in the Woods is one I've been insterested in since I saw it on a list of upcoming January 2017 games on GameRanx. I love narrative-driven games and 2D side scrollers, so the marriage of the two, plus the supposed appeal to my generation puts this high on my list. Want rating: buy
Breath of the Wild is a Zelda game that seems specifically designed to turn me off while getting everyone else to buy it before even buying a Switch. Everything people praise about this game is something I typically can't stand, such as open design that doesn't really focus on narrative, worrying about inventory as it relates to combat, etc. Still, it's a Zelda game, and it LOOKS gorgeous, so I'm still curious. Want rating: I say rental, but if I had a Switch, I'm sure I'd buy it.
Meanwhile, Persona 5 is a JRPG, and therefore is liekly way outside of my wheelhouse, but its art style is enough to have me curious. Want rating: demo or rental
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition sounds fun, but while I enjoyed the Doom 2016 demo, I'd have to rent or demo it first to see what it's about.
What Remains of Edith Finch showed up on fancy-shmancy best-of-year lists, such as the one published in The New Yorker. As infuriatingly disappointed as I was by Virginia, I don't actively hate "walking simulators" as a whole, and this one sounds like it has a legitimate, coherent narrative based on detective work and character building. That's a lot more appealing to me than the "what the f*&^%$#" story "presented" by that OTHER game. Want rating: Buy, but once I'm done with Night in the Woods
I'd love to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if they fixed the battle system. That's what I would say if I had a Switch ... or friends. Want rating: I need more friends
I'm mildly curious about Prey, even though I disliked my rental of Dishonored 2, which it gets compared to. Want rating: demo/rental
Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is one I really want, but have trouble justifying given how many fighters, the fact I own GGXrd already, and the fact Dragon Ball FighterZ comes out this month and Tekken 7 is in my PSN cue as we speak since it's on sale.
I really wish fighting games would just give you the complete version the FIRST time you pay $60, but I guess that's not expected. Oh well. Want rating: Injustice 2 and Street Fighter V's initial releases kind of pissed me off ...
Having said that, I'd totally buy Ultra Street Fighter II on Switch if I had a Switch. But I don't and I still don't see quite enogh games to justify new hardware when my PS4 will keep me busy for years.
Tekken 7 is, as I mentioned, in my PSN cue as we speak for half off. I'll probably end up buying it before the January 9 cutoff.
Splatoon 2 looks fun, but ... once again, not fun enough to buy a Switch for. Also never played the original. Want rating: demo or rental
Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the original game on PS2. I'll see how I fell after beating 0.
Knack 2 is a newer 3D platformer, so ... I dunno. Maybe? Never played the original. Want rating: I'd see if the original was $5 again first and even then it's a maybe.
Metroid: Samus Returns is another Nintendo game I'd want had I the hardware. Want rating: Look, my contract ends in May, so I have to watch my spending. But yes, I'd totally buy it if I had a 3DS.
Oh and I'd totally get Cuphead for Xbox One, if I had an XBOX and didn't feel as if that would be a game much better-suited for the Switch. Nothing against Xbox One, as I'm curious about the X, but it just doesn't have the games library for me. Honestly, Killer Instinct is the last exclusive I recall hearing about that interested me. Want rating: Wishing Microsoft fans the best.
Now Forza Motorsport 7, that's a killer app for a home console. Too bad I don't have a 4K TV to take full advantage. Want rating: I want a 4KTV, but I just don't need one ...
A Hat in Time is actually pretty high on my list. I personally prefer Super Mario Sunshine to pretty much any other 3D platformer, so a game focused on Gamecube platforming nostalgia with much better reception than Yooka-Laylee (which I hated)? Sign me up! Want rating: Buy, depending on price and what my budget tells me.
Super Mario Odyssey looks soooooooo fun too ... which is part of why Hat in Time is soooooo high on my list of PS4 titles ... Want rating: Yes I know Hat in Time is also on Switch. Don't rub it in.
Sonic Forces: From what I've seen I'd prefer they just re-release Generations on PS4 (I know it's on PS Now, but streaming games sucked when I tried it), but I always enjoyed the Sonic portions of 3D Sonic and it doesn't look like they stuffed too much extra crap in this time. Then again, the character creator is pointless to me, but ... oh well. Want rating: rent or wait for sale
Need for Speed: Payback was a guarantee for me after loving the 2015 installment in the franchise and seeing the E3 trailer, but reviews have kept me at bay. Want rating: wait for a sale after I've finished my other games.
Finally, having been stuck on some part of Okamiden on DS and not going back, I'd love to play Okami HD on a home console.
