Only 80s babies will remember these. Anyone heard of them or collect them? I had some when I was a kid and ended up keeping them because they're freakin awesome looking. 2 weeks ago I bought some of the newer ones, which, it seems, are only sold in Japan. They finally arrived today so I threw together an unboxing video full of FACTS!
Short version: Battle Beasts came out around '86 and did a crossover with the Japanese Transformers cartoon series Transformers: The Headmasters the next year. They revived it in 2012 (as Beast Saga) and put in a dice launcher into every figurine's CHEST. That part looks kinda funky, but the clear plastic square makes them look otherworldly; you can't stab these guys in the heart--they don't have one! It also comes with dice, cards, and the battle card layout pad? map? but it's all in Japanese so I can't play the game.
As with much coming from that wonderful and strange land, these figurines are oozing with creativity, full of detail, enlist a comical variety of animal types (even the less intimidating ones look respectable with futuristic armor), and, on the old edition, their limbs don't move, so they can be made to stand without effort. Even after all this time, the plastic has kept its color on my Series 1 beasties. And they are colorful; none of them have fewer than 3 different colors in the classic 80s clashing neon style, and the armor layout seems to be a unique design for each one. Quality stuff.
The new ones have lots of variety as well and each comes with a unique weapon and what looks like a shield. They're bigger and can finally move their legs now, probably a result of Fukushima. Another slight difference, besides being able to shove dice into the chest and pop it right back out, is that they seem to be a smidgen less intricate in some places. The bulkier shape allows for fewer computer-y button notches and armor contours, not that it really matters; my 3-pack, which includes a shark, piranha, and coelacanth look ready to spear their enemies in the face and dine on their tears.
