With the advent of the new century, so came the Sega Dreamcast, a harbinger of bullshit to come. Me and Gregg moved out of the ghetto in the late 99 and eventually found a home in the Sunset area of San Francisco, near the beach. We were both making good money and could afford to pay out the nose. For that Christmas my parents blessed me with a Dreamcast, and I returned home with it and Sonic Adventure.

I wasn't doing many drugs or drinking here, but I did start smoking pot intermittently, and mostly spent my downtime playing Tennis, Tony Hawk, and Skies of Arcadia (i Think). But one night that I remember, I smoked a big one and it was late so I plugged the headphones in and played Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

That game creeped me out enough, but that night it was super scary. It obviously hasn't aged too well, but at the time the graphics were great, and it was just plain cool. Zombies groaned from one ear phone to the other.

These were the end of the good times in San Francisco. The dot com downfall was arriving, and soon after that, 9/11.

But I did have good times with my Dreamcast for those couple years. My Chinese roommate who lived downstairs was really into Bullet Hells shooters, and would come back from Japantown with like half a dozen weird japanese games for the Dreamcast. Oh, and I also played Crazy Taxi ("Take me to the Original Levi's Store!"

Soon I would return to the east coast, but for 2000 and 2001 I chilled and smoked pot, hung out down on the windy beach, and schooled my roommate in Tony Hawk.

Crazy Taxi was fun, and I enjoyed Skies of Arcadia... when the remastered version came out on Gamecube in 2003.

it was a bit rough around the edges.  I bought the gamecube edition a couple years hoping to play it but I never got around to it. I keep hoping it will get rereleased for something.

Were you working in music or tech?

I worked for a music licensing company, which handled the merchandising rights to artists like The Beatles, Britney Spears, KISS, the Doors, and a billion other bands. We licensed these artists to companies who made products like apparel, toys, accessories, etc. etc. It was interesting, but I was really young and it was a bit much for me too quick.

I got to the Dreamcast late like years later but damn I used to run wild on NBA 2K and it was insane with the free throw mechanics where you had to line up the arrows with the L and R triggers.

Crazy Taxi, Tennis were the best, and that one game where you talked to the fish was just weird.

I loved playing Sonic Adventure and Code Veronica on the Dreamcast. Hell me and my sister got almost to the second half of the game back then but the tyrant stopped us in our tracks. I finally got passed that part a few years back now but it took forever. I need to buy it on PS4 and try to actually beat it....

YES......as kids we just couldn't pull it off. We didn't save up ammo like we should have and we almost didn't figure out how you even use the cargo thing to toss him out of the plane. In short we were young and dumb, lol

I got the Dreamcast for Christmas in 1999, too!

I hated it when the dot com bubble burst.  Before then I was high on the hog writing for The Dallas Morning News and when I graduated college in 1999, companies were asking ME to write for them!  I even brought multiple company business cards with me to E3 that year!  But right after that, everyone backed out, the dot com boom went to bust, and it's been all downhill from there.  Even my dad agrees with me that I've had bad timing and luck with that, so it makes me feel good that at least one other person understands what was going on then.
