Bad # 7- Atari Flashback!

The NES and SNES are not the only systems with classic titles on them. In fact Two of it's competitors have their own Classic Consoles. Today we take a look at the Atari Flashback.

The first ever Atari flashback was released in 2004. It was a fairly unique thing. Being able to play Atari classics again was becoming a trend. Even actual game consoles got some sort of collection. For instance the Xbox and Playstation 2 had a game released for it called The Atari Anthology, consisting of 80 games and was released three years prior.

Now since the flashback first came to be there have been at least 8 different Atar Flashback iterations. All of these have grown exponentially. For instance in comparing the Atari flashback 3 with just 60 built in games as to the latest Atari Flashback 8 at 105 built in games, you can see how it's grown. Of course nothing compares to my Emulated Xbox with Atari 2600, 5200, and 7200 games. All in all I probably have like 500 other games not on the Flashback.

Now the Atari flashback is probably a amazing thing, and I can see the allure. Classic games in HD? check. A replay/rewind feature? Check.A low price of only $65-$70? SOLD! But ATGames seems to have a knack for some hiccups in these releases. Various reviews cite atrocious sound quality and some games do end up getting dropped that were on previous flashback consoles, so there is some lack of consistentcy.

All in all the Atari Flashbacks are pretty neat and you can seemingly find them a lot easier to pick up than Nintendo's mini consoles. Be sure to join me tomorrow. I'll be discussing the Genesis Flashback. Speaking of flashbacks...do you have any flashbacks to classic Atari games. Did you play Adventure recently and not know anything about the game or what to do in it? No? Just me... Well this is awkward...

I had a trilogy of Flashback decks only a few months ago, Atari, ColecoVision and Intellivision, when I traded them all in. Most of these games I'd rather play on the XBO/PS4 Atari Flashback collection except for the games that use either the paddle or trackball. I wonder now if those Flashback decks came with paddles. I have a set of paddles I think I was going to hook up to the Atari Flashback deck to play Breakout and similar games. I wonder now if that was possible, and maybe I should've kept it for that reason. Ah well, trades will happen.

I did have a flashback to Adventure recently. There's an achievement in the XBO collection for getting the chalice to the yellow castle in like 2 minutes or something like that. It was harder that I thought and didn't get it, yet.

Yeah googd luck with Adventure. My whole thing with Adventure was getting stuck figuring out what to even do. My modern day brain can't handle 80's programming imagination and thought processes.

I was like that too when I revisited it. But I just moved around and once I saw the chalice, I knew I had to take it to one of the castles. I just guessed it was the yellow one. Turns out I was right.

Honestly, even when I was playing Nes, Atari games were just too primitive to appeal to me.

Yeah they are fairly simple. Most of the games don't even have like a completion or ending. Just get the high score and go to town. I much prefer a game you can beat and get an ending too...even if it is garbage.

I have a Genesis Flashback, the emulation on it is HORRIBLE!

My favorite Atari collection is the Activision Anthology on PS2.  Have you ever tried that one?

Yeah I hear the Genesis got short ended by AT games, luckily through my emulators I can give a analysis based on how the games should be! Also I never had the chance to play the Activision Anthology as I had a Gamecube, but I heard it was excellent with  like 70 games or something on it.

Not only did Activision Anthology feature a TON of games, it also had a soundtrack with a bunch of popular 80's songs, videos of old commercials and corporate material, and you could earn virtual high score patches.  Back in the day, if you earned a high score on certain games from Activision, you could take a picture of the screen and send it in for a real patch.  And you could earn them the same way in the anthology!  That collection rivaled the PSOne Namco Museums in terms of presentation.
