I was listening to Black Dahlia Murder's "What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse" earlier (title is a Castlevania II reference) and it got me thinking about what songs I like that are inspired by video games.

Not covers. Not video game music with added lyrics. Not official soundtracks. Songs that are in no other way associated with a game than the artist was inspired to write them about or because of video games.

Here are three:

I'm wracking my brain to think of some music that was inspired by video games. Lots of video game music inspired by musicians come to mind though.

Honestly, it was a bit of a challenge to find anything that wasn't more Protomen songs. This was just a thought I had. I wonder if NWP has ever done this for stage select. I always have a hard time thinking of games for whatever topic they bring up, regardless. Then someone will say one I didn't think of and I'll say, "HOW DID I NOT THINK OF THAT?!"

I just thought of one. Pac-Man Fever by Buckner & Garcia.

Cary beat you to it.

I figured you would. But it was all I could think of at the time.

I don't know if I can think of any.  Does Pac-Man Fever count?  I have the old record of it still.

Speaking of which, when I first watched Wreck-It Ralph in the theater, at the end credits they played a song about the Wreck-It Ralph game that sounded like it was made in the same style of Pac-Man Fever.  As I listened, I thought, "Wouldn't it be funny if they got the same people who did Pac-Man Fever to do that song as well?"  And it turns out, Buckner & Garcia (the Pac-Man Fever people), also did that Wreck-It Ralph song!

Also from the same movie, the theme song for the candy themed kart racer Sugar Rush was sung by a popular Japanese girl band. AK847...something.  I thought that was interesting, too.

I guess Pac-Man Fever counts since it's not a video game pro bono and I think I remember you mentioning that about Wreck It Ralph.

I remember reading about that Sugar Rush band as well. I know a lot of the people didn't like that character because of her voice actress being Sara Silverman, but she was my favorite character in the movie.

I haven't seen Wreck It Ralph since it first came out in theaters.

I really liked Wreck-it Ralph.  A lot of my friends and family recently said the new Jumanji movie was a great video game movie, but I didn't like it that much.  For me, my favorite video game movies are TRON and Wreck-It Ralph.  In fact, if I had to name my top five favorite Disney characters, Wreck-It Ralph would probably be number 5.

I really liked Wreck-It Ralph as well, but I also thought Jumanji was pretty funny. I was in the mood for it though. I can definitely see why someone wouldn't like the recent Jumanji though; I was actually pretty skeptical at first, because I liked the original Juamji growing up but never thought it was important enough to need a remake.

Jack Black's character was kind of funny, but overall I thought the new Jumanji movie was a waste of my two hours.  But I think Wreck-It Ralph really clicked with me because of the classic arcade themes.

I heard from some reviews he was the best part, but he actually made me laugh the least, and I'm a Jack Black fan. To each their own.

All I can think of is that Biggie Smalls song where he raps about having a Super Nintendo and a Sega Genesis.

I got nothing. Except maybe that CD of sea shanties for AC Black Flag. Which I haven't listened to.

I know you mean Assassin's Creed Black Flag, but I think the band Black Flag should really cover a sea shantie. Or Rollins can just show up and join some people already singing one.

This rap over Kingdom Hearts is pretty awesome

I like the rythm and sample, but the lyrics aren't my favorite.

What KH song is the sample?

Knowing what the original sounds like does make the sample and rap more impressive. I still like everything about the rap song except the lyrics though. lol

I cant think of anything myself. I guess I havent listened to anything inspired by video games. Most of what I listen to regarding games is official stuff and remixes.

I think that's mostly me too. I just happened to know of a couple songs like this and wondered if anyone else had more examples, but they're hard to come by it seems.
