In an idle moment today, I started thinking of Phantasy Star 2, which I had as a child for my Sega Genesis. It's really an interesting game, with a unique story, but it's also so difficult to the point of being sort of non-fun. I struggled with it as a kid, but I kept on playing it, and eventually made it to the halfway point but that was about it. I had a friend in those years who did defeat it, and he would regal me with tales of the end moments.
The story is actually very interesting, about people living on a future planet controlled by a "Mother Brain" where the ecosystem is regimented... but something has gone wrong and shit is getting fucked up and YOU have to figure out why. It has neat plot twists and a great end villain.
Phantasy Star games never achieved the cultural significance of Final Fantasy, for a lot of reasons, but they still have something to offer. Phantasy Star 3 was interesting as it allowed you to choose a spouse and then your resulting children would continue the quest. Most people agree Phantasy Star 4 is the best of the series.
In my idle moment, I was dreaming of a novelization of Phantasy Star 2, and what that might be like. I would like to tell the story so other people could enjoy it the way my imagination did as a child. I feel that way about a lot of games though.
I'll never forget this game. I hope Sega puts it on the new Genesis compilation for the Switch, and I can enjoy it again.
