My Thoughts on Owlboy

Well, I bought Owlboy along with a Earthlok and Galaxy on Fire: Manticore, and I think I already told you I was disappointed with Manticore. Anyway, I'm a bit disappointed with Owlboy too. But there are also things I like. First of all, it's not a platformer - you pretty much fly all the time, and you don't have to flap your wings either, you just automatically hover, and you can control where you go. Owlboy has a couple of moves of his own, but you'll usually be carrying another character whose skills you control. In the beginning of the game, you carry Owlboys friend who has a sort of raygun that you fire. It's not so good... the fire rate is weird, and while you can fire in all 8 directions, it's very awkward and hard to control. The game seems to have neat ideas and mechanics, but they don't really work too well for the most part. It IS clever, but it just doesn't add up in the end. I wouldn't recommend it.

On a different note, I'm old enough to remember when kids cartoons didn't include anime like Pokemon and stuff, and there were more Warner Bros and Hanna Barbera shows. I was thinking about this the other day about how I used to watch Wile E Coyote and whatnot. I will say my most hated show was Woody Woodpecker. I don't know why, I just hated that show. Woody was such a prick, and everything about it was just annoying. When it came on in the afternoons I turned off the TV.

I've been working very hard with writing and am almost done with my new book, a collection of short stories about legendary writers. I'm about a month away from finishing I think, and then I have to edit and revise. Very excited about this one. I'm not so into self publishing anymore, and am going the proper route right now. I think this book is promising.

Anywho, I hope all of you are well and gaming a lot!

I played a bit of Owlboy on PC, but was having kind of a hard time getting into it. I'd like to try again, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. Once I get through some other stuff, I'll probably get back to it, but games like that I totally enjoy playing on a handheld more than on my PC for sure.

I got it for the Switch. I definitely prefer games like that on handheld. I don't know, Owlboy just didn't do it for me.

There is something oddly satisfying about calling Woody Woodpecker a prick, but the studio heads at the network won't let me put my finger on it.

Yeah I remember when they used to show those old cartoons on TV in the afternoons.  Where I live there were even a couple of local shows that had live actions hosts and puppets (think Krusty the clown) that would introduce the cartoons.  The two local ones I remember most were B.J. and Lester's Cartoon Clubhouse and Mr. Peppermint.

I think the person who created Woody Woodpecker is interesting, at least.

Did you ever watch an old cartoon on TV called Deputy Dawg?  Nobody seems to remember that one.

Man I could talk about old cartoons all day.

I want to put a looping audio file of Woody's laugh right here.

I felt the same. A few elements don't work, though that pixel art is freaking gorgeous.

It's odd to think that it looks like a 2d platformer, and physics objects have the properties of such, but it actually plays more like an overhead 2D Zelda title with the gunplay of a metal slug. Or at least the first few hours I played did.

I liked Woody's into music, but wasn't a fan of the actual character. It just never clicked with me. Funny about Pokemon is that my roommates while working at Disneyland would watch the afternoon showing before going to work. I think this is why I eventually started playing the games.
