My Top 5 and Bottom 2 of E3

So another E3 has come and gone. This year's wasn't the best we had in terms of game reveals but it had me more optimistic about where games are heading than most. There looks to be a lot I want to play and little I disliked. However, there were two things that irked me and I need to get out of the way before I get to the positives:

2. (Potential) Sony Arrogance:

This is mostly Sony's attitude towards Fortnite MP. Now it's one thing to not allow crossplay, that's bad, but not as bad as holding gamers' Epic accounts hostage to their console if that's what they used first. A lot of gamers are going to still play on PS4 if Sony were to let them keep their progress made on Switch. It just reeks of bad business. Also the way they flat out stated there won't be any new games shown from them this year rubbed me the wrong way. Don't get me wrong, they have a great slew of first party titles coming out, I just would have liked to see something new.

1. Anthem

I've come to terms with that Bioware won't make another game I love the way I love Mass Effect or Kotor ever again. But Anthem was still painful. Right when something interesting happens and they throw a giant monster to fight, the footage stops. And something feels very off about it. The idea is solid and I may be cynical from Destiny and The Division for shared worlds and Andromeda from Bioware but I get the feeling playing Anthem won't be that much fun.

Also how they prop this up as something to satisfy single player and multiplayer gamers, yet don't have the typical Bioware party members? This isn't just because I love Bioware characters from a writing standpoint, Bioware was the only developer making AAA party based WRPGs and they're not filling that niche anymore. There's an extra tactical layer of depth from issuing party members commands and they scrapped it to keep gamers always online. They had this solution figured out in 1998 with Baldur's Gate 1 for crying out loud! If you want party members, play offline. However, if you want to go online, you can replace said party members with your friends. As is, Anthem just makes me sad.

Okay, with that out of the way, let's get to the good stuff:

5. Beyond Good and Evil 2

I know a lot of people are disappointed in the new direction it's going, but as someone who didn't really care for the original, I'm really excited for this. I liked the idea of the universe in the first game, but the game never really came together for me. And even as someone not invested in the universe, having Jade look to be in a villainous role is very intriguing.

4. Cyberpunk 2077

I'm in love with the look of this game and it looks like more my kind of WRPG than The Witcher games. The way they combined Geralt with typical RPG conventions like dialog options and moral choices never gelled with me and kept me from getting really invested. Not to mention, I'll take cyberpunk over fantasy any day. So I'm really optimistic on this game.

3. Death Stranding

In all fairness, Death Stranding looks like it could offer bland gameplay or be too weird for its own good. On the other hand, how many indie games do we get which look that weird, let alone a massively budgeted AAA game? Even when Kojima games don't work, they don't work in a fascinating way.

2. Super Smash Bros Ultimate

In a world where every fighting game has turned into a service and a third to half the roster winds up as DLC, Nintendo comes out and said, "Nah, we'll give you everyone who's been in Smash before and throw in a couple new guys for a roster of about 70." And they remembered Gamecube controller support. I can't wait to get Smash nights going again.

1. Resident Evil 2 Remake

Finally. I've been waiting for something like this since Resident Evil 4. Offering the third person perspective of that game with the older horror and puzzle elements of the older games. I could never make it through the original version of 2 so the story will be new to me as well. Then the gameplay footage only made it seem more exciting, enemy limbs will drop seconds after a shot, headshots need to be on point or they'll only blow off half a zombie's head and they can still attack. This game just looks so good.

Im surprised you're not looking forward to TLOU 2. I thought it looked great and I'm looking forward to jumping back into that world.

I hope Anthem is good. I really do. However I feel Destiny only really works because of how damn satisfying it's gunplay is. Bioware isn't going to match that.

I thought Spider-Man looked great!

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice also looks great, and Im looking forward to DMC 5, and Rage 2 surprisingly.

I thought it was a pretty darn solid E3, with the exception of the non event that wasEA's show.

Never said I wasn't looking forward to TLOU2, but I was entirely satisfied with what I got out of the original and while I won't turn down more of it, it doesn't excite me the same way as something that looks as fresh as say Death Stranding. Spider-Man looked great also, but that was the third E3 in a row we saw it, I'm just ready to play at this point.

Sekiro does look great. Would be in my top 5 if not for Activision, but have a couple reservations there. That it's not an RPG is actually a relief because it's easier to monetize those and cram the game full of microtransactions. Not that I think they would anyways, I think this will be more like WB publishing The Witcher games, but still don't trust Activision. DMC5 and Rage 2 also looked really damn fun. Also happy to hear we're getting another Doom and like Gears of War 5's new direction along with that tactics game.

Activision don't bother me as much as EA or Ubisoft. Plus they published older From Software games like Tenchu, which this seems to draw a bit from. I'm also surprised to see it's not an RPG. I've heard theyre possibly trying their hand at the Zelda formula, which could be interesting.

Also, I forgot to say this last night, but the Sony thing is a total dick move. I love Sony, but Jesus Christ.

Oh I'd take Ubisoft over Activision, EA, or WB any day. They're far from perfect, but they allow their devs to take chances more often (not perfectly, the the Ubi formula is criticized for a reason, but there's always a bunch of stuff that ruffles feathers in a good way) and make a wider variety of games. I think it's really telling that Nintendo trusted them with a Mario game more than anything.

Not to mention Ubi hasn't even done anything loot box related, let alone reward people for opening them on Normandy Beach. That disgusted me more than anything EA has done.

Ghosts of Tsushima stood out to me, but Sable is something I thought looked really cool flying under everyone's radar.

I thought the new BG&E2 trailer was way better than last year. I need to play the original on Steam once I get my laptop.

I love the aesthetic of everything else you mentioned, but we'll see how those games play and I needto watch the Smash trailer, but I haven't been truly excited for those games since Melee honestly.

If Sony continue to be assholes about multiplat, I may go XBOX next gen.

Ghosts of Tsushima ironically is a game I need to get my hands on before I can judge. Looked very similar to Assassin's Creed (and since we get too many of those not sure I can justify something too similar) and not sure how fun the combat will be. Looks neat but I can see it being dull.

I'm all about Xbox over PS now unless it's an exclusive. Game Pass was what really sold me on it.

GamePass is certainly leagues upon leagues above PS Now. I know you meant more than that, but that's one point of comparison Xbox wins without question.

Ghosts absolutely looks derivative, but I've not played many AC or similar games and the setting is interesting enough to hook me in.

Yeah, that's fair. AC just has settings that intrigue me more with that formula. Though it's bizarre we have so few games in Ancient Egypt and Greece, can't think of any for the former and the latter all get heavy into the mythology.

E3 didn't really have much to offer me other than Smash and Fire Emblem for Switch, and I'm glad that all the old characters are returning for Smash Ultimate, including Cloud from FFVII. I'll likely pick up RE2 Remake

Despite that, I'm very happy with the games that have come out this year and the ones that are still in the pipeline for 2018.  I've always felt like E3 was a dinosaur from the 1990s anyway, with companies increasingly doing their big reveals through social media and their own events. And in any event, it's increasingly dominated by EA and Ubisoft, two companies I don't care much about. So I'm going to increasingly look to Nintendo Directs and comparable offerings from my favorite developers and publishers.

I think Ubisoft is split in doing things I do and don't care about. Like I said, BG&E2 looks like a lot of fun, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is an RPG in Ancient Greece (nuff said), and Rabbids/Donkey Kong DLC looks like a blast even if that pirate game, The Division 2, and Starlink didn't do much for me. The last two at least looked like they had interesting mechanics, but I'm over shared worlds/toys to life respectively.

While I was happy with Smash Bros. Ultimate, I don't think Nintendo "won" E3 like they usually do for me.  You'll have to wait until my articles next week to find out what my favorite things at E3 were.  Care to take a guess?

Favorite things at E3? Starlink seems like your kind of game, but a bunch of games I could see you liking also lock you out of hardware, like Tunic, Sable, and Trover Saves the Universe (and not sure how much that last one looks like your kind of game). Looking forward to your article.

Tetris Effect seems amazing. I really liked Lumines on PSP because of the visuals and electronic music. But making it VR exclusive really pissed me off. I'm not upgrading all my hardware for a trippy Tetris game. Thankfully, Lumines is coming to Switch. I'll just slam my face against the switch tablet to get the $400 VR experience for free.

Surprising to see puzzles and tombs in Tomb Raider. I'm actually pretty excited for this entry. I didn't like the action game approach to Lara Croft. I just wanted old tombs with puzzles and this looks amazing.

If RE2 is a hit, I hope we see a revival of action horror games goddamit. I've been replaying the same RE games for years now. My eyes are ruined and hands are all cramped up.

Tetris Effect has a VR option, but you can still play it on PS4 without it. I'm really excited for Tomb Raider even if I'm not too keen it comes out the same time as Spider-Man.
