Cary's Re-Return to E3

The Electronics Entertainment Expo, or E3 for short, is one of the biggest trade shows in the video game industry, and I’ve been going to it nearly every year since 1997.  Sure I’ve skipped a few years here and there.  Like when I didn’t have an outlet to write on for a short while between the newspaper and GamerDad.  Or when I just started a new job and didn’t have enough money or vacation time.  Or when E3 went through a bit of a downsizing phase and I didn’t feel like it was worth the trip then.  But those absences were all my choice.  I’ve been able to go nearly every year otherwise.  But for the past five years, I was denied a press pass for whatever reason.  Yet somehow, this year I was able to get a media pass even though nothing had changed.  So last week I went to E3, and here’s some articles about it!

For the most part, E3 hadn’t changed much since I went back in 2012.  The security was tighter and it was a pain in the butt to get in the first day, but was easier on subsequent visits.  Since I’ve been blind in my left eye since birth, sometimes I need help getting around so I usually take a relative to these shows and this year I took my dad again and we had a lot of fun.  I still like E3 a little better than PAX as E3 has more games I’m interested in covering, and some exhibitors treat the media better at E3.  But PAX is still a fun show, too, for different reasons.  But since I went to E3 this year, I’m sad to say I won’t be going to PAX West later as well.  Mainly because I don’t have enough vacation time at work, but also because PAX usually shows the same stuff E3 had anyway.  This was also the second year that E3 has let the public in, which I think was a mistake.  The public has shows like PAX they can go to, and PAX West is almost as good as E3 now anyway.  But it would be nice if the industry and media folks could get E3 back so we can do what we need to do without all the extra crowds.  But that’s all I have to say about that.  Let’s check out some of the games I played at the show!

Oh yeah, one disclaimer.  I’m only one person, and couldn’t play EVERYTHING at the show.  So if your favorite game isn’t in these articles, I just didn’t get a chance to play it.  Plus since GamerDad is a family-focused site, I tried to play only games that would fit our audience.  There will be some exceptions, though, but yeah, I couldn’t play everything!

E3 2018 Part 1: Cary’s Re-Return to E3

My first article was a hodgepodge of games.  I played games like LEGO DC Super Villains and Sonic Team Racing, as well as checked out gaming accessories like chairs and headsets.

E3 2018 Part 2: Nintendo Made a Smash, but Didn’t “Win” E3

If you’ve seen Nintendo’s “E3 Direct” then you know that they mostly talked about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.  And I couldn’t be happier with what they did with it.  Normally I’m not too thrilled about all the Wii U to Switch ports, as I was a staunch supporter of the Wii U and do not want to rebuy the same games again on the Switch.  But with Smash Bros., I was willing to make an exception because I didn’t get a chance to play the Wii U version as much as I would’ve liked, or get any of the DLC.  I was worried that the Switch version might be a new game and maybe not have some of my favorite new characters from the last entry, like Pac-Man and Mega Man.  So I was really pleased to see how they handled the new game having every single character ever in the past, plus new ones like the Inklings from Splatoon and Metroid’s Ridley.  And on a side note, the Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Let’s Go, Eevee games looked like fun, too.

But other than that, I was pretty disappointed with Nintendo’s presentation.  Technically the only ‘new’ thing they showed that we didn’t know about already was another Mario Party game, like we need another one of those.  Smash Bros. Ultimate really isn’t new, just an enhanced port or at the very most, an all-stars version.  And the Pokémon games are based on Pokémon Yellow, so those aren’t really new either.  And their booth at E3 was even worse.  It was HUGE, but you couldn’t set foot inside it because all the people wrapped around in line to play Smash.  And from the looks of it, the only things you could play were Smash and the new Pokemon games.  Supposedly they had an area where you could play indie games, but I didn’t see it.

So yeah, you really got more info if you DIDN’T go to E3 and just watched the Direct.  Granted that makes sense, since more people could watch it than go to E3 and see their booth.  But I think they could’ve done both.  Nintendo’s booths at E3 used to be so inviting and I could go in and play a good two or three games in less than an hour.  Not anymore, I guess.  Anyway, check out this article for pictures from Nintendo’s booth, as well as other random pictures and game meetings.  I bet not too many other people covered games at E3 like Crayola Scoot and a new Adventure Time game!

E3 2018 Part 3: Classics Both Mini and Mega

When people at E3 asked what my favorite game I played at the show was, and I replied with “Mega Man 11,” they would say (sometimes rather disappointingly), “Oh, you’re an old-school gamer.”  Yeah, well, I may be old school, but I’ve still got it (I just don’t remember where I put it).  But being old-school isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as classic games are coming back in big and small ways!  I noticed it so much so at E3 that I’ve dedicated my final article of the show to all the classic gaming related stuff I saw!

Recently I read that E3 is just a dinosaur from the 90’s.  And I guess they’re probably right.  But I still say there’s nothing like actually physically playing the games and interacting with people at these shows.  So maybe I’m the dinosaur?  Hopefully at least I’m a cool dinosaur.

And that’s all for my E3 articles!  In the comments section, let me know if you have any questions and tell me what your favorite games at E3 were and what you think of my picks.  Later!  --Cary

I’m digging the SNK Neo Geo mini. I can see myself getting one of those when released. Also, I love the LEGO games, my wife and I play them together. Great articles too.

I got a press release about those NEO GEO Minis.  Seems they've already pre-sold out in Japan.

Right now I'm working on reviewing LEGO The Incredibles.

Thanks for reading!

Did we already know about that mech game Nintendo showed off? First I'd heard of it. Dragon's Cafe and Ninjala sound cool. Glad you got to be Mega Man in a picture.

Yeah I forgot about that mech game.  Didn't really make much of an impact for me.  Plus, do we know if it's coming out this year and if Nintendo is publishing it?  It wasn't at the show anyway, just on the Direct.  Thanks for reading!

It looks like Nintendo and Marvelous are both publishing it but its not coming till 2019. Nintendo is publishing it for the world wide release while Marvelous is handling Japan.

Yeah if Kirby's not driving one of those mechs, I'm not interested.

Although Marvelous/XSEED did bring out a pretty cool mech game in the US a while back called Solatorobo on the DS which was a sequel to Tail Concerto.

Those cabinets look awesome. Hope they do well. Just don't see one with games I'd be willing to shell out for. Makes me sad that the one I would pay $400 for would be a Konami beat em up one, which seems like it would be impossible to deal with all the licensing fees and Konami.

Cary Woodham

06/23/2018 at 08:58 AM

Yeah getting the licenses would be tricky.  There is a cabinet coming out with Final Fight on it.  Thanks for reading!

Final Fight is prpprobamy least favorite of the good beat em ups. Prefer Streets of Rage and Konami's games. The Street Fighter one would probably interest me most

I bet the Street Fighter one will be the most popoular in the initial lineup.

Yea, I have to agree. Nintendos E3 was not strong this year and that disappointed me big time since theirs was the one I was most excited for. However I think the reason it was weak is because they just didnt have anything ready to show. I think it covering Smash for Switch the most was a big indicator of that. I also though think another Direct wont be far down the line passed summer.

I understand your feelings about Mario Party but if Im being honest I am excited for it because it might just be the return to old school MP and I loved that series before it went to hell. Im just glad they got rid of the damn car!

Several Switch titles Im excited for already come out this year so Im just gonna keep that as a reminder and enjoy the rest of the year. Im glad you got to go back to E3!

Yeah even though Nintendo's E3 lineup was disappointing, I'm not too mad because I've got plenty of games to play.

When I was a kid, I always wanted the Coleco tabletop arcade games even though they were primitive even by the standards of the early 80s. Every once in awhile a friend from school would bring one (usually Pac-Man or Frogger) and we'd all crowd around and play it. These mini-arcades look cool enough, and I've seen them at Target, Walmart, and at Toys R Us before it went belly-up. Unfortunately, I doubt they'll ever have the games I'd really want - Nintendo's arcade games - in mini-arcade form. In particular, I'd love to have a minaturized Donkey Kong machine with the marquee and bezel graphics and all that. I'm just glad that Hamster finally brought DK and Mario Bros out on the Switch so I can play them there.  I also liked the design of the old Dig-Dug arcade cabinets made by Atari, did they have those there?

I have the Atari Flashback Classics on PS4, but I kind of want them for Switch since I've already got so many classic arcade games on Switch. Cool that volume 3 has 5200 games. Still no Solaris though. Guess they couldn't get Doug Neubauer on board. :(

I have the Pac-Man Coleco tabpletop.

This may not be quite what you want, but this year, Hallmark is putting out a Christmas ornament that is shaped like the Donkey Kong arcade cabinet.  They did this a few years ago with Pac-Man and Galaga.  You won't be able to play it, but it'll have lights and sound effects.  They're also doing a classic Zelda ornament and a Mario Kart ornament.

My Arcade is doing a Dig Dug mini cabinet.  I got a poster of it at E3.  Did you know I have a Dig Dug arcade machine in my garage as well?

Man, eveyrone likes Solaris.

SanAndreas

That's awesome. I'd love to have a DK ornament for my tree this year.

I'll have to look into the Dig-Dug cabinet. It's cool you have a full-size Dig-Dug machine. Someday I want a full-sized DK machine, LOL. Since this company and Johnny Turbo's Arcade are bringing out Data East games, I'm hoping that Atomic Runner Chelnov is in the works for a Switch release.

Solaris was really good for a 2600 game.It was the last 2600 game my childhood best friend got before he got a NES. It was a better Star Raiders sequel than the official Star Raiders II from Atari (which started out as a tie-in to The Last Starfighter). Smart of Doug Neubauer to hang on to the rights to the game, but I wish we'd get it on one of the regular consoles.

My Arcade COULD do a Donkey Kong cabinet, but it would probably just have the NES version on it like the others do.

Thanks for sharing your return to E3, it looks like you enjoyed yourself. I missed the presentations this year but thanks to social media I found out about the new Lego game and that might be my return to having a current Lego game on multiple consoles. I want to have a copy on the PC but it could be a fun game on the Switch. If it is like Lego City Undercover it will be a lot of fun.

I'm working on reviewing LEGO The Incredibles right now and it has a lot in common with LEGO City Undercover.

I recently got a switch, so I'm mildly annoyed there wasn't anything announced really. I've never early been into smash, so there conference held little for me. My gf was excited for Pokemon, but that's About it.

I'm glad you liked Mega Man, and I hope they do put in an option to make the game 8-bit. Thatd be pretty sweet. I definitely would have had to have taken a pic with the mega man canon too if I went!

Man, I want to get back into Soul Calibur. I haven't played any since 2. I just kind of fell off of fighting games for whatever reason.

Glad you seemed to have enjoyed yourself and hopefully you wont have to wait 5 years to go to the next one!

Cary Woodham

I love the Soul Calibur games because you don't have to be good at them to enjoy them.  Heck, the last two games I think I spent more time creating characters!

Man, I love character creation! The ease of entry is why I like mortal kombat and Injustice, though I'm a little over the gore in mK. It has gotten a touch on the nasty side as of late. SC might just scratch that itch.

Cary Woodham

06/27/2018 at 09:15 AM

The character creation modes in Soul Calibur 4 and 5 were so much fun.  That's why I was able to forgive SC5 for having a lack of single player modes because the character creation was so much better.  At E3 I asked if Soul Calibur 6 would have a character creation mode and they said they couldn't talk about that yet!  ARGH!  It better have one.  I don't see why it wouldn't, since the last four games did.

I want that SNK collection and Atari Flashback Vol. 3.

Great picture of you with the Megaman characters!
