Beach Party Reviews!

Hey everybody!  It’s time for a pretend summer beach party right here on my blog!  And what better way to celebrate than by posting some game reviews I’ve recently written over at GamerDad.com!  What?  People don’t normally do that at beach parties?  Maybe that’s what’s wrong with me?  Well, anyway, please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a ‘like’ or a comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  OK, let’s begin!

Shantae: ½ Genie Hero Ultimate Edition (PS4)

I’m a huge fan of the Shantae game series and always have been ever since the original on GBC (which I still have).  With that said, ½ Genie Hero is not my favorite in the series.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a GREAT game, but it doesn’t have the exploration elements that the past games had that I liked.  This ‘Ultimate Edition’ version includes all the DLC, like being able to play as villain Risky Boots, who plays more like how Shantae did in Pirate’s Curse, which is my favorite in the series.  You can also play as Shantae’s friends, and each has special skills and abilities and you swap them out on the fly so it has more of a puzzle feel to it (and also a bit annoying).  If you’ve never played ½ Genie Hero before, this is the version to get.  I’m just a little mad that the special edition came out so soon after the original’s release.  But I guess that’s the way games are now.

West of Loathing (Switch)

This is an open world free-roaming RPG set in the Wild West.  You ride horses, shoot bad guys in turn based fashion, and do other cowboy things.  Kind of like Red Dead Redemption.  Except in this game, everybody is a stick figure and the graphics look straight out of a child’s notebook doodles!  Because of the lack of clear goals, the game didn’t interest me as much.  But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game.  It’s one of the better games on this list, in fact.  So if you like Red Dead Redemption but wished it had more silly bits of humor, here you go!

We Bare Bears: Match3 Repairs (iPad)

Yeah it’s yet another match three puzzle game.  But this one stars the characters from Cartoon Network’s show We Bare Bears, which is a pretty good cartoon.  I like it anyway. Have you seen it?  I especially like it when they have the baby bears.  Anyway, as unoriginal as this type of game is, this is one of the better versions I’ve played, and held my interest longer than most.  And it had some new ideas I had never seen in this type of game before.  It’s free, so if you liked the cartoon you might as well try it out.

Azure Reflections (PS4)

It’s a bullet hell shooter starring a cast of annoyingly cute anime girls who can fly around and fire magic bullets for some reason.  Haven’t seen one of these in a while, but I’m not a big fan of the overly difficult bullet hell shooters anyway.

Disco Dodgeball Remix (PS4)

Before Wii Sports came along, my favorite sports video game was Super Dodge Ball on the NES.  So I’m always up for a new dodgeball game.  Unfortunately, this one plays like a first person shooter except you toss disco balls to try and hit other robots.  I’m not very good at FPS style games, so I didn’t get very far in this one.  It’s made by Zen Studios, but I think they should just stick to pinball games.

Eden Obscura (iPad)

This is a strange little mobile game made by Q Games’ PixelJunk division, if that means anything to anyone.  It didn’t really hold my interest for very long, but it’s free if you feel like trying it out.

Hexologic (iPad)

This is a Sudoku style puzzle game except instead of a grid, the numbers are arranged in a hexagon pattern, like a honeycomb.  Nothing wrong with this game, especially if you like Sudoku.  But it does get pretty hard rather quickly.

Reader Review: God of War (PS4)

And finally, one of my brothers wanted to review this game so I said ‘sure.’  These types of games aren’t my cup of tea anyway so you don’t see them much on the GamerDad site, so it’s nice to have a little variety every so often.  So go ahead and read my brother’s review of it if you like.

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading and posting ‘likes’ and comments on my reviews!  One last silly question: if you could bring any video game character to a beach party, who would you bring?  Can you guess who I would bring? Let me know in the comments section!  Later!  --Cary

I didn't either when I went to Rocky Point. I got kind of crispy. My traveling companion chewed me out over it, LOL.

Well it's a pretend beach party so it's a pretend sun that won't burn you.  In fact, it'll make you stronger!  Yeah!

If I were going to the beach with a video game character, it would definitely be Tifa.

She would turn some heads I'm sure.  Not sure who I'd bring with me.  What do you think?

I like that West of Loathing, Cary. Sounds like a good book or tv show.

I'd bring this woman I saw in Rage the other day. She's the one who teaches you how to throw the wingstick. Her name is Loosum Hagar.

Well she looks tough and has a neat hat.

You think a game about cowboy stick figures would make a good TV show?

Just the title suggests something more.

The title comes from another one of their games that had "Loathing" in it.
