COngratulations man!!! Welcome to the club!
I actually had a damn dream about Octopath tonight. I'm crazy. Golf story is pretty good too! I would recommend Darkest Dungeon if you haven't played it.

It's pretty great! So far the games I have for it are Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, Mario Odyssey, Stardew Valley, and Hollow Knight. Hollow Knight is like the new Dark Souls for me, I.e. I'll probably buy it on any system in becomes available in, because it's that fucking good. Also, portable is the perfect way to play it!
However, if you have the console, you know how great it is, so allow me to complain about it for most of the blog. Again, most of these are nitpicks, but Nintendo always gets so close to designing something great only to have a bunch of small things holding it back.
First things first: in portable mode, this thing is damn uncomfortable to hold. It hurts my hands to play after 20 minutes. This might just be a problem with me since I have kind of bad arthritis and have had problems with my joints since I was quite young. This is why wii games were out of the question for me, since it was pure agony, especially with metroid prime.
The wii-u was much more comfortable. I get why it's designed this way, but i feel like the joycons could be a tiny bit bigger and/or be more rounded in shape.
Secondly, the dpad is kind of awful. Again, I understand why this is because symmetry with two player, but it still makes playing platformers difficult. I can't imagine playing Celeste in this thing.
Thirdly, where the right analogue stick is makes pressing the buttons awkward. At least for me.
Finally, no virtual console at this point. I am so sick of starting over and receiving games in drips and drabs every console generation. I like what they're doing giving games away for free for having to pay for online, and I like that online is so cheap in comparison to PS4 and xbone, but they need more at this point than 3 fucking nes games. This would be the perfect system to binge the metroid series, or play the des and gba/des castlevanias, or mario 3, or golden sun, or final fantasy 6, or crono trigger, or mega man, or... well, so many other games! This system is fucking perfect for that! I hope they remedy this soon.
Oh, one more thing - fuck Nintendo for locking cloud saves behind a paywall.
Other than those comparitably small things, it's a pretty good system. It's basic interface is miles better than the 3ds and wiiu, and it seems Nintendo vaguely understand the Internet this generation. Well done.
So, what games do you recommend I get? I'm thinking of getting golf story soon, and octopath travellers looks mighty interesting.
I already have darkest dungeons on pc, PS4, and vita. Don't think I could justify owning it on switch as well unfortunately xD
Don't worry, I once had a dream that I had one of the wheel skeletons from Dark Souls as my roommate, and it made making coffee in the morning incredibly difficult because I now had to dodgeroll the fucker constantly!
I love the Switch. I'm playing it more than PS4 since I got it, and games like Valkyria Chronicles 4 I am getting for Switch instead of PS4.
My tastes run toward stuff like VC4, Shining Resonance Refrain, and Octopath Traveler, so I don't know how much help I'd be.
I'm actually not too disappointed in the lack of a Virtual Console. I do hope they have it, and I hope they will have Gamecube games this time, since I've played all the SNES and NES stuff to death and don't have a lot of interest in revisiting the N64. However, I'm really enjoying the Arcade Archives stuff on it. The company that does Arcade Archives made a deal with Nintendo to bring their arcade catalogue to the Switch. So far, they have Punch-Out!!, Mario Bros, and Donkey Kong. Mario Bros. and DK are far superior to their NES versions. I still prefer Punch-Out on the NES. Since DK is my all time favorite arcade game and the arcade version has never been officially released until now, that's actually a huge deal for me.
Nah, I like a good jrpg. I'll probably be picking up VC4 as well. Didn't know about shining but I want it now.
GameCube games would be great. I really want to play Baten kaitos, as I've never tried it. I just personally like being able to play metroid, Zelda, and jrpgs in bed honestly, which is why I want the vc back.
Battery can be a it dicey for portable. It's only around two hours, so on a flight or public transport it's not ideal. I mainly use the portability to play in bed though so I don't mind too much.
Still, for a portable console to have the power it does is pretty amazing.
Why aren't you interested in Hollow knight if I might ask? It's definitely one of my all time favourites, and this is my third time through.
Celeste is also awesome. It's just a bit too intensive in terms of platforming for an analogue stick, and the dpads the switch aren't really up to it in my opinion. But I have skinny thumbs, so that might not be helping.
I thought Dead Cells would be meh too imo, and initially it was. But I spent a stupid amount of time on it, and grew to enjoy it over time. It's not as amazing as everyone said it is, but it's a fun little roguelite title that keeps getting better every time the debs add something.
Hollow Knight...mostly superficial reasons. I just don't like the art. There is a lot you can do with the concept of 'insect world', visually, and HK went a way that isn't compelling to me, namely with character design. Environments look very nice, but then there is the monochrome palette a lot of them have. I know, I'm picky. I'll probably get around to it though since it's received a lot of praise.
It does get more colourful in later areas, it's mainly just the first one and a few others that are more washed out. It does get pretty vibrant, especially in some mid to late game areas.
Mainly it's just the gameplay and atmosphere. Unfortunately the game is a bit slow t get going, but once it does open up it's an amazingly diverse game. What starts as a simple "hit enemies until they die" evolves with different charms you can find. Equipping different loadouts for different scenarios is great, and they do things like double health at the expense of not being able to heal, making your attacks significantly stronger if you die the charm breaks, and so on and so fourth. There's are a lot of these and a lot of variety.
It's very Souls like, but it doesn't steal the combat like most games does. It instead takes the atmosphere, worldbuilding, and weirdness of Demons and Dark Souls 1. Also, it's a thirty hour game that adoesn't outstay its Welcome. It has dozens upon dozens of bosses, and a ludicrous amount of areas that are distinct. There are npcs that will attack you and ways to make some enemies friendly or non hostile. It has some cool things it doesn't tell you that allow for sequence breaking, Like being able to bounce on spikes duck tales style, as well as some other things.
The only problem I have is that the first hour and a bit sell the game a bit short. They aren't bad, but they make it feel a bit more generic than the later sections show.
Heck yeah another Switch owner! Yeah the joycons are tiny. I bought joycon covers on Amazon that kind of help with the shape. Currently I do like the Letterquest game but other than that there really hasn't been a lot of Switch "Must Have" games. I think the next Switch pickup for me is either Lego Incredibles or the new Pokemon games.
I got a zelda themed case kit with my switch. It included plastic grips for the joycons and some round plastic covers for the joystick nubs which makes it a bit easier to hold and play, but only slightly.
When I played the WiiU, I used to rest my hands on a cushion which I found more comfortable to play so I do the same with switch. My wrists start to hurt after a while, like you said, but this works for me.
So far I only have Zelda and a bunch of demos. There are a lot of good demos in the eshop. Just type in 'Games with Demos' in eshop search and you'll get a bunch of good stuff. Puyo Pop is very good demo to replay.
I'm still waiting on Dark Souls for switch. The original dark souls of dark souls. I need to get on Hollow Knight, but I already beat it on PC.
Hopefully we can play smash bros around holiday if you like that game at all?
Sorry to hear about your joint issues. Maybe diet could help? I'm trying this Dr. Fuhrman's diet soon. GBOMBS is the acronym he uses for the best foods. I like that. Supposed to clear up lots of things.
I like Nintendo consoles when they have Virtual Console. What gives with the Switch taking so long to bring retro games to it?
I still want to play Mario + Rabbid's Kingdom Battle.
I'll look into the diet thing, but I think my issue is hereditary. Both my parents have pretty severe joint issues, and the jobs I've had have put pretty big strain on my joints as well. But you never know, so I'll talk to my doctor and see if it could be diet related as well.
I don't know. They took a while to roll a lot of old games out on wii-u, but i thought they'd learn from that console, not repeat mistakes.
As do I. A less stressful version of xcom sounds great!
