This past weekend I found a couple of new favorite games that I have spent a lot of time with. One of them was a new version of a favorite franchise, and the other is a game I bought a long time ago but never really played until one night while reading Reddit someone mentioned it as something to play that doesn’t need an internet connection. As it turns out this game is kind of like one I am currently playing on Steam but on the iPad. Throw these games in while the three freemium games I am currently playing and there is a lot of fun going on when I have some free time.

NCAA Football 14 - PS3

I started a new Franchise with UMass. Instead of building up my coach, I started him off at level 20 and with the fastest possible upgrading I can have. So far the Minutemen are 5-1 with their only loss being a 10 point game at Wisconsin to start the season. The pass happy offense is doing well but I need to recruit more speed guys to really get this offense rolling.

Paladins - Switch and Steam

01

When this game was announced that it was going to be on the Switch I was excited because this seemed like a game that would be perfect on a handheld. Heck I thought about buying the Founders Edition for $30 but ultimately decided against it. Anyways I played a couple of games on the Switch and I liked it but it just didn’t feel right. The next day I downloaded it on Steam

02

Instead of using the 360 Controller, which usually feels really good for these types of shooters, I went with the Keyboard & Mouse setup. This felt a lot better, and before some folks get upset I suck at K&M but after a couple of games it felt good. I don’t move around as fast with the WASD but the aiming is a lot better. Anyways this is a fun game, and I’ve played with some nice folks, and so far I don’t have to spend any real cash on this game.

Asphalt 9 - iOS

03

This is a franchise I was really into back on the Nexus 7 days, but I stopped playing a bit when it went free to play, but when I saw this in the App Store I gave it a shot and so far I’m really liking this game. There are a couple of options to way to play but I’ve stuck with the default where it’s auto acceleration, and all I control is brake, turbo, and swiping to move to a given track when prompted. The crazy racing is still here but now there is a lite version of Burnout with being able to spin the car and take out other cars in your immediate surrounding. This might have been in A8 but I really didn’t play it.

To unlock new cars you have to purchase packs of cards that represent blueprints. Each car needs a certain number of cards and then after that you can increase its star rating by collecting more cards. You can use in game currency or actual money. The in game currency you earn by winning short races, and completing goals. Nothing revolutionary but the formula works so why change it?

The game is fun, and I played it for over two hours because once you run out of fuel, I watch two ads that are around 20-30 sec each and I get a whole new set of fuel icons. For a freemium game this is awesome because I can constantly play without having that limit that early games had. Overall if you like the previous games or other racing games like Drive.Club, this is a must download.

Galaxy On Fire 2 HD - iOS

05

This is a game that I downloaded years ago on my first iPad. I believe I got the first two games for free and I think the only thing that cost money with this game is the DLC missions. The storyline is that you are a bounty hunter who somehow gets transported to the other side of the galaxy by some event and it also sends you into the future. You must get back home but to make it interesting, your ship is heavily damaged and you have to do odd jobs to get fix/upgrade your ship and find out what happened.

The onscreen controls are not bad but at times I did lose my joystick because my thumb moved away from that area on the screen. The ship to ship combat is like EverSpace, as well as the mining, but this one some bad acting, which is kind of fun, but it seems like the pacing is a bit off. This is my goto “full” game on the iPad.

The final game I started playing this week is

06

Infinite Spanish - iOS

This is something I found by accident but I like it. You learn Spanish words that the game repeats, and it builds up your vocabulary as you progress in each level. The levels are setup similar to how Angry Birds presented their levels. Each level is represented by a square and you can earn up to three stars depending on how well you do. The game is simple, you are presented with slowly falling dots, you hit the dots and you either have an icon with two options, and an audio reading of the word with two images. As you click on a dot, other dots still fall, so you have to be quick to hit all dots before they hit the bottom. As you progress you get a new word thrown into the mix which makes the game a little tougher. Words are broken into categories so you don’t get confused.

For someone like myself who suck at learning languages this is fun. I really could have used something like this in high school.

Alright Pixlpeeps I am off, have a good week!

That’s all for now, more later!

Infinite Spanish sounds similar to Duolingo. I remember that being fun.

I may have a copy of Duolingo. I think it was a random freebie on Slick Deals. Infinite Spanish is fun and I'm learning the basics of Spanish.

Duolingo was free when I had the app on my phone in 2013.

My friend mentioned Paladins to me today and I had no idea what it was. FPS MMO? I could've guessed.

It's a fun game and I get why people spend money on it. I don't think I will but it is tempting to unlock all the characters even if I only play it a couple of times a day.

I like the characters. I'll give it a spin sometime.

I like GoF for iPad, but I downloaded the new one for Switch and just didn't like it. Just didn't catch me.

My friend and his kids have been playing Paladins on Switch. He told me one of the boys accidentally bought a "goat for the goblin to ride on."  Ha ha.

I think the one on the Switch is based on the 3rd GoF on the iPad. I never tried that one, but if there happened to be a sale on the Switch I may give it a go. I think it would be fun to try it on that platform.

Haha that is awesome that you can ride a goat in that game.
