Why spoil?? (Contains ZERO spoilers for anything)

Ok so I frequent the Amazon video game forums but hold off on commenting as the community there seems pretty tight and truthfully I don't have the balls to get involved. The only reason I say this is that a very important subject came up about spoiler alerts on said forum today.

On the forum someone decided it would be a good idea to reveal a major spoiler for Game of Thrones (the HBO show) in the subject heading of a forum. As you may of may not know, the TV show is based off a series of books and will not catch up for two to three more seasons. This individual, in the space of a sentence, completely destroyed the major plot point of this season on a show that is doing a really great job of building excitement and tension. This for me is the lowest of the low in trolling. I'm a big fan of Game of Thrones and have read the books but if I had not my enjoyment and involvment in the series would have been severely blemised (if not ruined). I genuinely feel for anyone that had their excitement for the season destroyed by some moron with a superiority complex.

Personally, when I post a blog on a particular game say, I try to be as basic and non-specific as possible while still getting my point across. I know from personal experience that some people enjoy reading articles on games/movies/shows, they are yet to experience, just to decide whether they want to get involved in it in the first place. In this case, however, the individual did not give the reader a chance to screen and avoid Game of Throne topics. To very clearly spell out a major plot point for the purpose of spoiling the experience for other people is for me the lowest form of trolling and should be almost punished by forum moderators. I really hope that fellow Pixlbytes feel the same as from what I've seen so far in the Pixlbit community; we are all very respectful.

I apologize for this random rambling but this just really irked me all of a sudden.

Let me know what you think on this. For me it's a huge reason to avoid online interation with others. For shame.....

Later!

I try my best to avoid spoilers but if I do happen to include them in something I write up I give a warning before hand so no one gets upset. Now if someone ignores my warning thats not my fault, I gave them a fair chance to avoid it. Im sorry someone did that on the forum to the Game of Throne's fans. I havent watched the show nor read the books yet which I plan to do both but I have had things ruined for me and it sucks. I would want to think that moderators could punish for those sort of things....maybe Im wrong but that person should be kicked off for that sort of thing.

Yeah I agree on the kicking off. I'm completely ok with putting spoiler warning in advance. In fact I think thats what should happen but to put the spoiler blatently in the heading is just wrong. Some people huh.....

Even if accidentally spoiled that isn't going to deter me from the enjoyment of watching it unfold before my eyes. I think it's bad when you already know dissapointment is coming.

Yeah sometimes it's less than others. Minor spoilers I can live with but certain shows/games are built around particular plot points and it's just plain wrong to spoil those I feel

I hate it when people do that. I try not talk about any specifics when I talk about games/TV Show, but if I do I'll stick a Spoiler Tag before it. Some things might spill out, but it's purely on accident.

People who go and ruin endings/plot points on puropose are just terrible, and they probably enjoy that. It's a shame but there are tons of folks who haven't seen it yet (I'm still on the first season on Game of Thrones), and hearing something that will happen on the show would just kill the experience for me.

I think you're right about them enjoying it. Why else would they do it right. For me, I really really like GoT and would hate for you not to experience the twists as I did. It's kinda the whole point of the series. People need to not be so selfish

It's a funny test to see how a series or film can be classed as truly amazing, spoilers are something I detest however it can highlight the true amazingness of a series. Take the film sixth sense for example, I really have little interest in watching that again (and it's been a few years) because the twist at the end is what made the film. Once you know what it is all of the suspense is gone. I know TV series are a little different, for one the shear size of them denotes greater re-watchability but for me Game of Thrones is something that has quite a few epic moments and so many character relationships thats its a joy to watch. Something even the Walking dead is behind on. I do totally agree with you though, this guy should be put in the stocks!

You make a great point about the sixth sense. It doesn't matter how awesome the film is, if you know that twist going in, it's not the same...

That sucks. I hate having things spoiled for me. For instance, my wife and I recently watched This Is 40, which is a fairly funny movie, but the daughter is watching through Lost and when she finishes it she blurts out the ending. To the entire series. As someone who hasn't gotten around to watching Lost yet but was looking forward to watching it at some point, that made me really mad. And if someone is just letting spoilers fly out of spite, then the hammer needs to come down on them for sure.

Wow, having a movie spoil an unrelated TV show is new to me. Now that does indeed suck

I know exactly what you mean. I felt like once the trailer was up, I had to rush through reading Catching Fire just in case someone spoiled it. Fuckers.

At least you've read Game of Thrones (I don't have HBO), but that really does suck for people watching the show who haven't.

Absoutely, it's a shame. And good idea reading Catching Fire. Might be an idea to finish the 3rd one too just in case Smile

I try not to spoil things, but if I read a spoiler, I don't get too upset.  The way I see it, if you don't want something spoiled for you, don't go on the Internet.

TheMart22

There is truth to that but if you have to completely avoid a forum just so you don't have a certain show spoiler, I wouldn't visit any forum. If it is mentioned that a thread may contain spoilers, it's my fault for reading but to just have it in the heading very clearly and blatently is harsh

When I blog or write (Or speak), I do what I can to with-hold any and all spoilers. Sometimes I slip, but that's rare. I love the art of surprise and I'd be pissed as well for if someone spoiled something for me as well.

100% agree. I'd hate to feel as though I ruined someone elses experience. I'd rather discuss it in an announced spoiler thread after the fact

I've done stupid things before like going on the internet in order to find out something about a game that I thought was relatively innocuous (example: looking up the voice actor for a certain character) and then accidentally spoiling the entire game. Usually by going the character entries in Wikipedia (right underneath where said voice actor is listed), and reading the character descriptions and learning that so and so dies. Ridiculous. Definitely learned my lesson in that regard.
What really does grind my gears is going to forums to chat about a certain game/anime/show and reading comments that don't give ANY warning whatsoever, and drop a huge spoiler- especially if its a series similar to Game of Thrones, where there's a book/manga series which is ahead of the timeline as compared with the show....and someone starts to discuss events in books 4/5 when the series is only effectively on book 3.   Definitely uncool.

I'm careful too with wikipedia entries or imdb. Generally, I stay completely away until I finish the game/series. And some people are just A-holes. As long as people give an advance spoiler warning they can say what they want but slipping a spoiler in is cruel

I think spoilers should be invisible unless highlighted. Then again, I bet I've made mistakes divulging key information without meaning to. Hey,never said I was perfect. lol.

haha agreed. I have probably alluded to certain plot points without noticing but than again thats very different to outright announcing a twist (especially when the conversation was at a much less advanced level). It doesn't take a lot of time to announce a <<<<SPOILER>>>>
