Wow, it's been a while since I checked in! Sorry I haven't been reading and commenting, but things have been busy here. I should be around a bit more now that our annual birdwatching festival is over and our next crew member on board starts on Sunday.

Games: The only games I've played in the last ten days are Red Johnson's Chronicles, My Aquarium, and lots of Bejeweled 3. I finally unlocked all the fish for My Aquarium, so now I can get down to playing around with the various tanks and coming up with pretty combinations of fish. And decorating and re-decorating the tanks. Red Johnson's Chronicles is a slog, I want to see where the story goes, but the puzzles aren't much fun. Glad it was cheap, otherwise I'd have been really annoyed. As for Bejeweled 3, my favorite mode is Diamond Mine. Any guesses why?

Reading: Still picking away at Whatever You Do Don't Run. I also ordered George Takei's book Oh Myyy! off Amazon last week. Haven't had a chance to really dive in yet, but it should be interesting. I've also been poring through various field guides for work purposes. Oh, and reading an essay here and an essay there out of An Evening Among Headhunters and Other Reports from Roads Less Taken by Lawrence Millman, my absolute favorite travel writer in the world. What I love about his books is that, because they're all made up of essays, you can just read whatever catches your eye and don't have to read the whole book in order.

Watching: Still watching NYPD Blue. I recently watched a Netflix exclusive series called Hemlock Grove. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone. Take that as you will. Finally got to watch Skyfall. Daniel Craig may be my all time favorite Bond, he's the most like the Bond of the books, which was my first exposure to James Bond, not the movies. I also watched The Avengers again. You know you're tired when you fall asleep during that movie! Jason and I are finally caught up on The Amazing Race. We have a pact where we only watch it together. Amazon loves us, lol. My prediction for the season finale: the hockey brothers and Max & Katie are definitely final 3, the other team will depend on how much help the hockey brothers give the dumb blondes. The only reason they've made it this far was with a lot of help from the boys.

Ranger stuff: The festival is over, we're all exhausted, but it was a huge success. This is the third year we've done it, and it gets bigger and bigger every year. The live bird presentations by Wind Over Wings were once again the most popular programs. I didn't get to see the one at Bradbury Mountain State Park on Saturday, I was in charge of my park and the Osprey Watch that day, but the one on Sunday was wonderful, as always. Unfortunately, my pictures didn't come out that well this year. Hope brought four owls: two northern saw whets, an eastern screech, and a great-horned, as well as bringing Zachariah the raven. All the birds that she has at Wind Over Wings are unreleasable due to injury or imprinting on humans. The great-horned owl imprinted on a human and has no clue she's an owl. This is pretty sad, as there is nothing physically wrong with her. She was blown out of the nest, and if the well-intentioned woman who found her had contacted either fish and wildlife services or a rehabilitator instead of taking her home and feeding her bread, she could have been returned to her nest and learned how to be an owl. Moral of the story: birds can be returned to their nests and their mamas will welcome them back with open wings. If there's something wrong, contact an expert, it increases their odds of surviving and being returned to the wild.

Listening: Went to a concert on Saturday, it was a fundraiser for the fuel assistance program for the next town over. They've had some really good groups, but this was the one that I really, really wanted to go to. My friend Kat's group Meteora was playing. They do amazing three part harmony singing, and Kat writes some great songs. The song that really blows everyone away I can't find a video of, but this one is good, too:

While I was looking for Meteora videos, I came across this one. This was the last song of the Saturday Concert at the Getaway last year. It's a poem by Tennyson that I really love, as my friend John Roberts sang it at a gathering shortly after my dad died. This time around, we were singing it for the family of a young woman (19 years old) who were supposed to be with us that weekend, but the daughter had passed away two weeks earlier. I'm in that mass of people on stage, but hiding in the back. We actually sound not too bad, considering that there was no prior rehearsal involved.

Now that Feathers Over Freeport is over, I'm hoping to have some time to game!

I started watching Hemlock Grove as well! I was a little unsure of it at first but after the first three episode's it really started to grow on me. It seems like you've been quite the busy Ranger though! I imagined though that this time of the year would be a bit hectic for you since you're probably getting ready for the busy season.

So far, all my time and energy at work has been focused on getting things ready for the festival. I'm looking forward to days that are warm enough that I can service the equipment without my fingers turning blue and numb with cold. I don't have a heated shop anymore Frown.

That's interesting about the owl.  Pretty sad though. Birds are fascinating.  I watch the birds in my backyard every day, and I've decided this huge black one is a raven for sure. IT's the king of the back yard, and sits in one of our palm trees making a racket all day.

Hope all is well out there!

raven

Does it look like this guy? Ravens are amazingly intelligent. He's worth watching carefully, trust me.

When I was in elementary school there was a bird nest in the big tree in our backyard and a chick fell out of the nest one afternoon. There were street cats that roamed around a lot in those days in the neighborhood so I thought the best idea would be to grab the chick. When I went to grab it a bigger bird, probably the mother, swooped down and did a fly-by of my head and I decided to leave the chick alone. Eventually it died and I think a cat was able to get some calories out of the situation.

On a side note I was playing outside one time back in elementary school and vomited, and my neighbor's dog lapped it all up like an afternoon snack. Henceforth that dog was my buddy from that day forward and I rubbed his belly whenever I got the chance. He was brave, a real team player. I'd never eat his vomit, but he ate mine.

The parents will usually do a pretty good job of trying to raise the chick, even if it isn't in the nest. You did the right thing in backing off. It's a hard thing to do, though, isn't it?

As for dogs, well, mine has been snacking at the Litter Box Buffet lately, something that I find exceedingly disgusting. I don't mind him scarfing up cat vomit (he does a better job cleaning it up that I do, lol), but poop is too much.

I've always wondered why dogs are able and willing to eat waste like poop. Is it a personal choice for pleasure or is there some kind of nutrition they are craving that they get from it? Like when you see humans that have mineral deficiencies and will sometimes have great cravings for eating their scabs, other people scabs, or doing weird things because they want to get the salt or other minerals from something. I can't imagine there's any nutrition in poop, it's waste for a reason, right?

They must have pretty strong immune systems/guts to be able to gobble up poop so willy nilly.

I once asked a vet, and he said that there are trace minerals that they're lacking in their diets. He also suggested sprinking meat tenderizer on their food, as it contains some of those trace minerals and might cut down on the poo snacking. That's called coprophagia, by the way. Sometimes it's behavioral, too, but usually with their own poop. And most canids have cast-iron digestive systems.

Sounds like a very busy, but very fun time. I wonder how many parts of Oh Myyy!! are about Shatner.

Both songs were nice and pleasant, and you guys do sound very good for no rehearsal. Sorry to hear about the daughter, though. Frown

Owls are awesome, and glad you have a fun job. I myself learned the other day that National Park Week was from the 20th to the 28th. I of course learned that on the 29th (d'oh!), so it still stands that the "park" I've been to most recently was Bill Clinton's house. I still find it just too fitting that the only non-replica thing in there is a book about a ...  cat ... ahem.

Not much about Shatner, as far as I can tell. That's probably in his biography, though.

I also realized as I was listening to Crossing the Bar again that there seem to have been two separate sheets of lyrics going around, one with more verses than the other. Well, we still don't sound too bad, and there is something special about singing with a bunch of your close friends for something that is that personal.

It was National Park Week? And Socks the Cat ftw!

Socks the Cat is cute. Looks nothing like the one on that book, though. lol

As for National Parks, that's what Google (and I presume whatever made me Google this, maybe it was on Craigslist somehow?) tells me: http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm

It's sad to hear about the great horned owl Tami but at least it gives people the chance to get to see them up close and personal, I remember taking an injured Tawney owl back home when I was a kid, the RSPCA didn't want to know unfortunately so we took it to the vet, luckily my old man knows lots about birds and let it recoup before letting it back into the wild where we found it. I'll always remember watching her fly off, it felt pretty amazing. Love the photo of you and the Raven, the crows in Australia have a really annoying call which I still can't get used too so it was nice to see some 'black bird' appreciation in your blog!

I'm glad the owl has a good home with Hope. Bread isn't good for any birds, and especially not a fledgling carnivore. That's not me in the pic, that's Hope, who runs Wind Over Wings. I'm hoping that someday I might be able to do that, though. There is a slight chance I may be volunteering with Wind Over Wings and learning how to handle Zachariah, though Smile. You can check out the great work Hope does at WInd Over Wing's website.

Ha ha, sorry Tami, wasn't sure to be honest but it's difficult to tell when I usually see you with hat and scarf! had a look at the website, it looks like Hope does some amazing work, I'll be sure to make a contribution when I'm earning again, causes like this are right up my street!

She's back! Missed you around here,Tami. Glad things are going well with you. And that your festival was such a roaring success. That book by George Takei sounds like a good read. He's one fascinating fellow. Can't wait to read your Bones rant if you decide to do one. That season finale last night ticked me off! Booth would never do that. He's not the type to back down from a fight. I like Meteora...that was great.

Hey Wayde Smile! I'll give you the short version of my issues with Bones: piss-poor science. Several months ago, I watched an episode where Hodgins comes back to the group with "the win scales come from a rare beetle called the emerald ash borer that is only found in the blah-blah highlands of blah." The emerald ash borer is not in the least rare, we should only wish it were. It's an invasive beetle from Asia that is munching its way through the east, destroying ash trees as it goes. I fumed and sputtered, and Jason pointed out that not everyone knows about that particular bug. But it still bothered me, I mean, with the internet so readily available, it wouldn't have been particularly difficult to check. Then, about a month or so ago, there was an episode where Hodgins identified a substance as bird poop from a peregrine falcon. Now, I have doubts as to whether it's actually possible to figure that out from some bird poop, but I don't know enough about the subject. What I flipped out about was when they went to a crime scene location at night and the falcons were on the ground guarding a rotten foot. Peregrines don't roost on the ground. Peregrines don't eat carrion. Peregrines are not at all active at night. Just about any birder can tell you those three things, and it took me 30 seconds on the computer to double check my facts, and all I did was put "do peregrine falcons eat carrion?" into the search box. Nothing fancy, no secret decoder ring needed. Now you have my rant, lol. I find it ironic that they do such a bad job with their scientific fact checking on a show where the main characters are all so devoted to science.

Glad you liked Meteora. I wish I could find a video of them doing that eastern European hymn a capella in three part harmony. That was transcendently beautiful.

Thanks for the rant! You enlightened me there. I agree about the junk science they use at times. I'm not a scientist, but have a son who knows a lot of things about science and animals. He even pointed out some of the issues you had while we watched. That thing last night was a personal bit of stupidity, though. Booth would never hurt her like that. He'd work with her to find a solution to the killer's ability to track him so well. I guess they have to have a cliffhanger since it's the season closer. I saw that Red Johnson game tonight when I was shopping. Looks really different. What is it about?

Ranger1

I haven't watched the last couple of episodes yet, but there have been a few "who are you and what have you done with Booth?" moments over the last few seasons.

Red Johnson's Chronicles is a point and click adventure-type game where you're looking for a murderer. The art style reminds me a little of Hotel Dusk, but the game isn't all that and a bag of chips.

Oh Bejeweled 3. I made a lot of progress in that game on my original PS3...and then lost my game save when that PS3 died. I haven't gone back since.

Hey NYPD Blue, I haven't heard about that show in a while. I used to like watching it, good times.

I play Bejeweled 3 on my laptop, and Iost my save file when my laptop kicked the bucket. It was fun regaining what I'd lost, though.
