The Zen of Horse-riding in Red Dead 2

I've been playing A LOT of Red Dead 2. I haven't binged a game like this for a while. I'm really enjoying a lot of aspects of the game, but what I most like - similar to the first game - is just riding around on my horse. There's something just so calming and soothing about it. The horse-riding is very well done, better than the last Zelda by far. I love Zelda, don't get me wrong, but I think the horse mechanics are better here.

Early in the game, I stole a horse, and while I was riding away from the law, I must have run into a big rock or something, and my horse leapt into the air, and flipped me off, landing on its side. It thought it was going to die, but it got back up. I did lose my favorite horse yesterday in a random ambush. That was sad. Chris Yarger said he rode his favorite horse off a cliff and killed it.

It's very tempting to be an evil outlaw, but I've been maintaining a balance. Chris though tells me, "Fuck the law." He's gone ALL bad. Ha ha.

The world is exquisitely designed and is huge. There are a lot of things to do. It's easy to be distracted by coming across some stranger that needs help... or wants to rob and kill you.

Anyway, I've been enjoying it. In other news, I've decided I'm going to buy the new Pokemon game when it comes out in a few weeks. I've always wanted to get into them, and I think a Switch version is the perfect opportunity.

When I read the horse flipped you off, I got a pretty funny image. I'll play the game if THAT's one of the horse mechanics.

It's like the best horse mechanics ever in a game. I love horse riding in games. I unlocked the ability to rear up but I promptly forgot it and couldn't get it to work after that.

I got my horse shot by the po pos. I had jumped off it to run into a fenced in area to hide and they just shot it. What the?

I like that you can whistle for your horse just about anywhere. Sometimes it was too far away to hear me but you can boost your horse skills to extend the range.

I also ran over someone with my horse by accident. I guess I shouldn't ride it on a busy city street.

I couldn't tell which was my horse after a while. I stole someone's once but I gave it back to him. No problem. I don't know what happened to my original horse from the beginning of the game. You tie him up somewhere and then forget which horse is yours.

yeah it's really great. Sometimes my horse isn't around, but if you go to a stable you can get one of your horses no matter what. Or, you can steal somebody else's. Ha ha.

I think also the horse returns to camp if you lose it.

I stopped worrying about my horse after a while. It's just there somewhere when you need it, mostly.

Yeah riding the horse in the last Zelda game was not...great.  I named my horse in that game Turbo Horse, like I always do.  I was sad when he died at the last battle, and I couldn't bring him back since that was the end of the game.  So I don't think I'd want my horses dying on me in Read Dead 2.

Horses dying is almost as sad as when dogs die. Cry

I liked the giant horse in Zelda. I managed to ride my horses off of a cliff a few times.

I haven't picked up RDR2 yet. Rockstar's sandbox games generally aren't my cup of tea, but I like playing with the physics engines they have in them (my favorite things in GTA 4 and 5 were getting into head on collisions in fast cars and watching my character get thrown through the windshield into oncoming traffic and causing more wrecks and deaths).

I kind of wonder what was like to be the guys who had the job of designing the horse testicles. Or the guys in charge of programming the horses taking a shit. Laughing

I loved car chases in GTA when you're going so fast and you're just inevitably doomed. Ha ha.

Those horses can poop at some inopportune times, man.

I want to get the Switch Pokemon game but I'm having reservations about part of it being like the mobile game. Hopefully the majority of the game is like the previous ones that I enjoy.

I'm sure they wouldn't screw with the formula too much, those games sell like hot cakes to repeat customers.
