MMOnthly - Tera + Game Dev Tycoon and Me

Guys, here's the deal.  Each month, I shall delve into the realms of an MMORPG, level up as high as I can, and give you my personal opinion on it.  Does that sound awesome?  By golly of course it does. This month, it's Tera.  What did I think of it?  Well, If I told you here, you probably wouldn't read the following article, into which I put at a significant amount of sweaty effort. READ ON. End self Advertisement.

So yesterday I purchased Game Dev Tycoon and got seriously addicted to it. I mean I played for 6 hours straight when I bought it, and when I wasn't playing it, I was thinking about it. This game got inside my head in the same way tetris did, which is kind of crazy. Also, this game is FUCKING HARD! I get up to the playstation era and go bankrupt every damn time. I made it to the dreamcast once, made a game for it, and it sent me bankrupt. Seriously, fuck the Dreamcast. There are some hilarious parallels to real life, such as Sega's retardedly cheesy marketing, my pokemon game sold like wild fire, my final fantasy clone also sold like wildfire, and my nintendo 64 superman game got ones across the board. This game is just crazy fun, and the developers even congratulate you and thank you for buying their game, telling you you're awesome and stuff. Oh, and the anti-pirating thing they did that you've heard about on every site ever by now is pretty neat. It got them a lot of publicity and it was a good bit of satire.

So yeah. Since I don't get on here anywhere near as much as I should, how are you guys? Any interesting stuff you've been up to? Has anyone played Dev Tycoon, or have any thoughts about it? Also, if you aren't my friend on steam, add me so we can play some games together sometime. Those of you who are my friends on steam PLAY SOME FUCKING GAMES WITH ME!

PC. It's 8 bucks, and it has limited graphics so you should be able to afford it. http://www.greenheartgames.com/ It would actually work really well on IOS.

I remember this being discussed before and I really loved the screen shots. I'm kind of a sucker for retro graphics (was sort of like earlier sims games) and I appreciated the sense of humor in Game Dev. Tycoon.

I'm glad it's on PC. This might be the new Terraria for me! (Aka, small indie game that blows my socks off!)

Lately I've been getting into my psp so I recently ordered Ys7 and Godeater Burst!

Fez is my new indie game that blew my socks off... I love that game! It is an art game with fun mechanics! I love just exploring and finding everything.

Anyway, back to game dev tycoon. Yeah, it's dirt cheap too, and if you buy the game now, they send you a personalised message thanking you for buying the game. I don't know if they still do, when I bought it they still had a 96% piracy rate. It's a very satirical game too, but it's subtle. It uses it's mechanics rather than dialogue to convey it's messages.

I have not heard of this Game Dev Tycoon but color me intrigued. And I see there's a Mac version now, so I could actually play it! Always a plus.

Yep, it's on mac, and looking at the store, it looks like it's on IOS... oh dear god, if it's on IOS my life will be over lol.

Nice review on Tera. Well written and I like the humor you used to describe that race of little girls. Those crazy asiansTongue Out.

I would like to play some games with you, but I don't have that much games as I would like to have and my computer still runs games like pieces of turd.

The Elin are down right disturbing! Also, I just looked through your list and you don't have many multiplayer games. I'd recommend Monaco or Magicka. Magicka is generally cheaper and a lot of fun. You can usually pick it up for around 2-5 bucks. If you do, let me know and we'll have a go. I tried to play it with aaron a while back, but it didn't work out.

That trick they pulled with Dev Gaming Tycoon was pretty cool. Of course, it just led people who download their games to say the company itself was at fault for making bad games that were clones of its other games, and it was their fault for not releasing a demo, at least on Kotaku's comments (where my friend on facebook linked to, which is how I heard of it); apparently, there WAS a demo, but I'm going off hearsay.

Yeah there is a demo. The reason their game didn't sell that well is because they didn't really have money to market it. This sort of was their advertisement to some degree.

That sounds like a rather bizarre concept yet I'm throughly intrigued! and you went for Superman 64! your a braver man than I sir.

I tried to make an alternate dimension where the game was GOOD. Didn't work lol. And yeah, calling it a great game is hard, since a lot of it's mechanics serve to prove points about the industry as opposed to having good gameplay. It is still fun, it's quite smple, but really fun. And it's only 8 bucks.

Playing through MMO's is dark territory. There are some truly awful ones out there. I'll be surprised if you even have an ounce of sanity left after you're done! I'll be interested to see what you think of Defiance, critically panned but people seem to be having fun with it, weirdly. The TV show isn't great but it's not truly terrible either. The brand is an enigma!

The cross-over stuff they're doing with defiance is pretty cool. The game isn't amazing, but it's fun. It's a lot like a third person Borderlands, but with actual mission variety. The AI is a bit retarded, but oh well. I'm not very far in, but I like it so far. It makes me smile, which is always a good thing.

And yesh, when I finish this column, my sanity will be non existent. I actually don't mind MMO's if they're done right though.

The schedule should go like this: Defiance, Ragnarok Online 2, The Secret World, Wizardry Online, DC Universe, LOTR Online, and whatever else comes out this year, provided it doesn't have a subscription fee.

Literally downloading Ragnarok Online 2 now, here's hoping it's good! I used to love MMO's but something happened where I could now see the mechanism that was dangling the carrot in front of me (if that makes sense) and I've not really been able to enjoy them the same since. I actually really enjoyed LOTR Online, although I only ever got to mid-twenties level wise and I thought DCUOnline was alright as well. Can't speak for the others.

This really doesn't have anything to do with your blog, but have you played Fez? It's about the same price as Game Dev Tycoon, and I was thinking about getting it soon. Why are you playing so many MMOs anyway?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Because I'm doing a column for plus10damage where I review an MMO per month lol. And yeah, I've been playing a shit ton of Fez. I adore it, it is a fucking great game!
