Game Review Feast

For Thanksgiving I’ve prepared for you all a smorgasbord of game reviews I’ve recently written at GamerDad.com for you all to chow down on. Please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a comment or ‘like’ or two. I’d appreciate it. After these reviews you should all have nice plump little bellies! Bon Appetit!
Oh man this game is awesome. When I first saw it I knew I HAD to review it, and I’m glad I was able to. Anyway, when I was a kid in the early 80s, there wasn’t very many games that could pull me away from Pac-Man. But one of those games that did was BurgerTime. I enjoyed that game so much as a kid, that when I got home after playing it for the first time, I cut out a chef hat and pepper shaker out of paper and played ‘pretend’ BurgerTime around the house. Yeah I was a weird kid, but at least you can’t say I didn’t use my imagination! BurgerTime was made by Data East, a game company that isn’t around anymore, but they made some memorable games in the arcade back then. A few years after BurgerTime, another arcade game they made was Heavy Barrel, a top down overhead army shooter. I always thought of it as just another Ikari Warriors clone, and don’t have many memories associated with it. But I did see it recently at a retro arcade bar I went to. So taking a cue from combining other arcade games like Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders, what happens when you mix BurgerTime and Heavy Barrel? You get Heavy Burger, of course! It’s a super awesome multiplayer twin stick shooter featuring many of Data East’s arcade classics. Only problem I had with the game is that it’s a bit steep in price at 20 bucks, and they lead you to believe you can unlock playable versions of the arcade classics, but it’s really just the history behind them. If you read just one of the reviews on this list, I hope it can be this one.
G.P. the GamerPuppet Unboxes the Soul Calibur VI Collector’s Edition
Most of the games I prefer to play are silly, cartoony, whimsical stuff. Which is why I’m a good fit for reviewing things at GamerDad.com. But sometimes I do like to branch out and play more ‘grown up’ games every now and then. The Soul Calibur series is one of the more mature games I enjoy playing. The fighting is fun, the characters and story are interesting and the graphics are always great. My favorite part is the character creation mode. I tend to call the games now “Soul Calibur Dress Up” because of that. But one of my brother Jeff’s friends said once that “If you’re not spending more time creating your character than actually fighting, you’re playing the game wrong!” I love that. Anyway, Soul Calibur VI just came out and I got the Collector’s Edition of it, so here’s G.P. the GamerPuppet to unbox it. I just wish I had more time to play it! Who are your favorite Soul Calibur characters? Mine are Nightmare, Taki, Cassandra, and Sophitita.
I don’t play Dark Souls so I don’t know much about this amiibo. It was one of the hardest for me to get because it was a GameStop exclusive. It’s a knight guy with a sun on his chest like a Care Bear, and he has his arms stretched out like he’s saying, “Yawn, I’m sleepy!” Or, “I ate a sandwich thiiiiis big!” And that’s all I have to say about that.
Ubisoft may poop out one of these every year, and they may not be my cup of tea, but there’s a reason why they’re so popular. I can recognize a quality game and this is one of those. Also, every year they include a new song that surprises me, whether it be a Hatsune Miku song or a Mario song on the Switch. Well in this game there’s a Pac-Man song! WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS?!? You know how much of a Pac-Man fan I am!
It’s just a match three puzzle game with more fast action elements. But it’s still fun and nice to have a game like this on a console without ads or in-game purchases. Plus the price is right at less than two bucks. It was made by Two Tribes if that means anything to anyone.
And finally, this game is a cross between a point and click adventure and one of those hidden picture games like what we used to play in Highlights magazine. It has a sweet story about a brother and sister, but when the sister gets sick and goes to the hospital, the brother comforts her with a story about a rabbit trying to save his friend, a sick plant. Unfortunately, I did not like the game at all. There’s a lot of vagueness going on and the lack of good instructions forced me to mash around the screen trying to find stuff and I had to use a guide to get out of the first room. In a world where everything is digital and we don’t have instruction manuals anymore, good instructions in a game is a must, and I’ve been a real stickler about that lately. It’s a shame, too, since the premise of the game is so heartwarming.
And that’s all for now! Hope you all have nice full, fat bellies from the feast! Thanks for reading my reviews and posting likes and comments. I appreciate it. Happy Thanksgiving! --Cary
