Into the Spider-Verse & Steam Winter Sale

Into the Spider-Verse is probably the most interesting style I've seen a movie take on in recent memory. It does the comic book panel thing Ang Lee's Hulk tried to do really well, the animation style goes really well with Miles Morales' graffiti art hobby, and the rap/hip-hop soundtrack is the first I've heard in a while that actually matches what's on screen in a complementary way.

The story and characters are also endearing and funny and I learned later it's the same writing team from The Lego Batman Movie. Oh, and the after-credits scene is the first I've actually "gotten" in a long time (I've read a few graphic novels, but I always have to look up what the hell they're hinting at, except for this time), and even if you don't get it, it's a funny scene.

If you thought the trailers looked interesting, I'd highly recommend it. The animation even looks a lot smoother than what I remember seeing in the trailers I saw earlier this year. Maybe that's my mind playing tricks on me, but I remember the first trailer looking a lot more choppy than the scene(s) in the movie itself.

Honestly, it kind of made me want to boot up Insomniac's Spider-Man again and maybe even download some DLC.

Speaking of video games, I'm eyeing a few items on my Steam wishlist for the Winter sale.

Question: Do the deals stay the same all the way up until January 3 (when the sale ends this year), or should I go ahead and pull the trigger on Sunset Overdrive, Assassin's Creed Origins, and Doom now? I also might ask Nick if I can review a game called Iris.Fall, which looks interesting.

I've had my Christmas shopping done for a while now, but I need to wrap presents. Hope you all have a great weekend and your shopping centers don't make you too mad.

I'm not sure how much Steam sales have changed, don't really buy much on my PC anymore, but before games would have a regular sale deal and a day where they're highlighted with an extra discount. Doesn't apply to every game and you have no idea when it does.

But everything that is on sale right now would still be on sale through Jan. 3? As long as that's true, I'm ok, I just need to re-calculate my budget to see what I can get away with for PS4 and Steam this year.

"writing team from Lego Batman" has me interested.

It's not as laugh-out-loud funny consistently as that one, but it does have some pretty good laughs in it, it's touching, and man does it look cool. I think you'd enjoy it.

I'm not thrilled with the story as I've seen in the trailers so far. Why can't the kid be the center of the tale? Why has he got to have a mentor? I don't like that.

He is the center of the story, but I liked the way they introduced the adult Spider-Man who shows him the ropes.

I get what you're saying though.

Yeah the Spider-Man cartoon movie is the best of the Spider-Man movies.  And I don't really like Spider-Man but I enjoyed this one.  Only problem I had is that I go see movies in 2-D, and most of the time they look fine in 2-D.  But the last two movies I saw didn't really do the transition from 3-D to 2-D effects very well.  Both this and the Grinch movie had a lot of blurry backgrounds that I could tell were meant to be seen in a 3-D glasses movie enviornment, even though these were clearly the 2-D versions I was watching.  And it's not just me that noticed this, too. The other people who went to see these movies agreed with me.

I heard about that in reviews, but I didn't really notice it. Someone said it was a comic book effect they were trying to emulate, and in Spider-Man's case I can believe that, but I don't know cause again, I really didn't notice. Probably not gonna see Grinch in theaters.
