Happy New Year!  Let’s ring it in with some recent reviews I’ve written over at GamerDad.com!  Please click on the links and read as many as you can and maybe even post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d really appreciate it.  Let’s begin!

New Smash amiibo

So as you know, a new Smash Bros. game recently came out, and so they’ve released some new amiibo figures for it and I got them!  There’s Star Wolf, Inkling Girl, and Ridley.  They are all really cool and detailed as usual.  But I especially like Ridley!  He’s such a cool villain.  Every time I see Ridley in a Metroid game, my inner child wants to stomp around the house yelling, “Rar!  I’m Ridley!”  The new Smash game is very good.  Believe it or not, it probably won’t be my Game of the Year, but definitely number two.  They took out my favorite part of the game for this one: the 3-D virtual trophies.  I know that may not be a big deal for most, but I really liked them and it’s what inspired me to collect amiibo figures in the first place.  But the rest of the game is very, very good.  It even makes for a better portable experience than the 3DS version did.  You can just pop in and play for a bit and pop out.  And there is so much single player content that I don’t even feel like getting Nintendo’s Online service yet.  But I definitely will for Animal Crossing!

Sega Heroes (iPad)

This is a mobile puzzle battle game very similar to Puzzle & Dragons, but with SEGA characters and villains.  You have characters from games like Sonic, Super Monkey Ball, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Super Monkey Ball, and Phantasy Star.  Only problem is the game gets way too hard too fast, because they want you to spend money to get anywhere.  And it feels like the game should’ve come out a few years ago when the Puzzle & Dragons craze was in full swing.  Plus my pretend girlfriend Ulala isn’t in it!  Aw man!

Save Me, Mr. Tako (Switch)

Retro styled games based on NES and SNES graphics have been all the rage lately, with titles like Shovel Knight and The Messenger.  But you don’t see too many imitating the black and white Game Boy graphics.  Which is a little strange since the Game Boy had many classics like Tetris, Super Mario Land, Kirby, and others.  Heck, my all time favorite Zelda game: Link’s Awakening, was on the Game Boy!  But now there is a game like that with Save Me, Mr. Tako.  You play as an octopus (Tako means octopus in Japanese), and it reminds me of Kirby or Starfy, just a lot harder.  This game would’ve been really good, but towards the end of the game, there was a bug that would freeze the game for me inside a temple maze and would force me to start over.  I gave the game my ‘three strikes and you’re out’ rule, and the third time it happened to me, I stopped playing it.  It’s a shame since otherwise, the game was pretty good.

Don-Ay Pet Land (iPad)

This is a combination of a virtual pet game and a continuous runner.  But the neat thing is when you view ads or buy anything in the game, the proceeds go to an animal rescue organization, so I guess that’s cool.  Actually that’s the only redeeming thing about the game, otherwise it’s pretty bland.

Cookie Jam Blast (iPad)

It’s another match three puzzler very similar to Candy Crush. Normally I don’t review many of these kinds of clones, as they’re all the same, but the makers of this one sent me a goodie package so I figured I’d throw them a bone.  Why do the free-to-play games spend the most money on promos like that?  I do have to say that at least this is one of the better match three clones I’ve played.

Solar Flux (Switch)

This is a space themed puzzle game involving lots of physics with gravity and orbits.  The controls remind me of games like Asteroids and Gravitar, and even a bit of new games like Star Trigon.  But it’s really hard, though!

Somos (iPad)

This is a simple mobile game where you tap on the screen to make a dot move from one side to another to avoid obstacles.  It’s also really hard!

Truck Simulation 19 (iPad)

I saved the worst for last.  This is a truck driving simulator for mobile devices and it has terrible controls and worse instructions.  Definitely not optimal for mobile.  If I had a Worst Game of the Year category in my Game of the Year list, this would be on it.  If you want to play a good truck game, track down SEGA’s arcade game American 18 Wheeler.

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading and posting likes and comments on my reviews!  Hope you all have a great 2019!  Later!  --Cary

I like Sega Heroes but I knew it was going to be one of those games where I would have to do a lot of grinding to get characters that I would want, so I ended up uninstalling it before I got sucked in.

I didn't know that there was American 18 Wheeler on the iPad. I liked that game on the Dreamcast.

When free-to-play games get to the point where you have to play a bunch to get anywhere, and they do that so you'll pay money to get further, I usually stop playing them.

American 18-Wheeler is not on the iPad.  You can play it in an arcade, Dreamcast, or PS2.  But it's better to track those down than to play that Truck Simulation game on iPad!

I want Sega Heroes on my console. I love those kinds of games.

American 18-Wheeler looks pretty cool for Dreamcast. I wish I had a retro store near me, I'd go look for a copy.

You're really not missing much with Sega Heroes.  But if you want to play that style of game, you can try Puzzle & Dragons on your 3DS.  There's also a version of it on that same cartridge that has Mario characters.

You can get Amercian 18-Wheeler on Dreamcast or PS2.  It's also still in some arcades, although it leaves a pretty big footprint.  Of all the games I've talked about, it's crazy that everyone comments on the truck game!

Thanks for reading!

I tried Puzzle & Dragons once. Something about it I didn't like, but I should try it again.

Come to think of it, I think I saw that truck driving game at Round 1.

Yeah I have that Puzzle & Dragons game and I didn't like it as much as I thought I would.

American 18 Wheeler isn't at my Round 1, but it could very well be at yours.  Man I love that arcade!

I really wanted to like Puzzle & Dragons too. I want another Puzzle Quest or Quiz & Dragons.

I guess it's Smash time around America. Happy New Year!

Yeah it's nice that I'm playing a game that everyone else is playing.  Because usually that's not the case.  Thanks for reading!

Big rigs sure don't seem to do well in video games. The Angry Video Gane Nerd reviewed an incredibly bad PC game called Big Rigs. That game was too unfinished at release to even be a beta.
