Quick Hits: Jerry! Jerry!

Good morning Pixlpeeps! I haven’t been on this site this past week because I’ve been battling a cold and had a family emergency. All is well on both fronts, although I still have a stuffy nose, an occasional cough and my ears are still plugged, otherwise I am good. I had a blog typed up on Monday but never uploaded it, so I might be lazy and just upload it next Monday. Anyways let’s get started with Quick Hits.

Chris Reads…

I’ve taken a week break on starting another book. I actually started a Superman book, the last of my Humble Bundle set but I haven’t fired it up in a week, so I figure why not just continue it in February. I did get some new books from Amazon that went free so I added them to my library. I want to start diving into those hopefully soon.

Chris Watches…

So the random CW channel here that doesn’t broadcast in HD has been showing The Jerry Springer Show. Apparently this show just ended last year but everything this channel has been showing is new to me. I used to watch this all the time in college because it was always on around dinner time at the commons so my friends and I would go eat, watch Springer, and enjoy the hour.

On the movie side of things I’ve continued my random watches of Tombstone (usually in the mornings) and I’ve thrown in First Daughter at night. First Daughter is the movie about the daughter of the president (Katie Holmes) going to college and how life is with Secret Service around her. She wants a more normal college experience so her security detail is smaller but her father places an undercover agent as a student with her. You have an idea of where this flick is headed. Anyways it’s always on so I watch before going to sleep.

This weekend is going to be nothing but wrestling with NXT Takeover: Phoenix and WWE Royal Rumble. It should be fun and I’m already calling it that Takeover will be a better product.

Chris Listens To…

I’ve been on an Earth, Wind, & Fire kick the past couple of days but instead of listening to their hits I’ve been diving into the albums. There’s some good stuff there that gets overshadowed. I’ve really enjoyed 1977’s All N’All. This was the album with the track Fantasy. It’s good morning music to get you going.

Yesterday I listened to Weezer’s Teal Album, which is a bunch of covers and for the most part I like it. I went to buy a physical copy and it’s nowhere to be found on Amazon. Shame. The one track I didn’t I would like turns out to be a favorite, and that’s their cover of No Scrubs. It just sounds odd to say “Weezer’s cover of No Scrubs” but it is good. It’s like when I saw Jessica Simpson years ago at Wango Tango (concert in LA put on by a radio station) cover Baby Got Back. Sounds odd to say but was really good.

Randoms…

I’m cleaning out my collection of mp3s and getting rid of all the files that are below 320 kbps. The only ones that I am keeping are the random files that are 256 kbps but are AAC files, and bootlegs. Everything else is getting tossed.

I also am going to use my old 500GB external desktop drive as a temporary home for my FLAC Files until I can clean out my music drive. I want to use the little music player I bought last week as a FLAC player. I will eventually get a bigger micro sd card for it.

Pickups

From last week’s trip to the library and neighboring thrift stores I bought some CDs. The library with their usual .25 CDs. The thrift store CDs are all .50 cents but since they have different color price tags that correspond to a percentage off (35%, 50%, 60%, random right?) the lady running the register didn’t want to do the math so asked if I wanted to do .25 cents per album. I said sure.

Thrift Store pickups

Original Broadway Cast - Hairspray

Tchaikovsky - Ballet Suites, Nutcracker and Swan Lake

Various Artists - Hairspray Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Jon B - Bonafide

Edith Piaf - La Mome

Library Pickups

Pointer Sisters - Break Out

The Cajun All Stars - Ches Lez Cajuns

Aaron Copeland - The Music Of America

Mozart - Piano Concertos

It’s a random collection but I’m starting to build up a Broadway collection, adding to my movie soundtracks, and I wanted to listen to this version of Swan Lake/Nutcracker by I think the Cincinnati Philharmonic. I like their version more than the version I bought in high school. It might be a better recording. Anyways for less than two tracks on iTunes I have new music. I might go back on Saturday to see if they added any new CDs to the book store.

Alright Pixlbit I am off. I found another showing of Tombstone I stopped writing for 10 minutes. Anyways have a good weekend!

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

Looked up Weezer's "No Scrubs;" not as good as the original imo, but I do still like their cover of "Africa." Then again, I also like the NSP cover of "Africa," so maybe I just like "Africa." Unless Pitbull is involved ...

Oh it's nowhere near as good as TLC's but it's kind of a fun pop-ish version. The positive is that I think in March there's going to be a physical copy which will find it's way into my collection.

Nice pick ups with the Tchaikovsky and the Copeland.

Thanks! I'm thinking about going back to the Thrift to pick up their other classical CDs.

Those were some of my early introductions to classical music. I was especially into Copeland because Emerson, Lake and Palmer did a version of Hoedown.

That's interesting, I didn't know Emerson, Lake, and Palmer did a version of Hoedown. Looks like something new to check out on Spotify.

On their Trilogy album, one of my favorites of theirs.
