Last summer and into the fall I took a deep dive into Sega Genesis music. Surely there is good Genesis music, despite the system's lousy audio reputation, right? I'm sure I only scratched the surface but the answer is definitely YES. My favorite, possibly, is the Elemental Master soundtrack, which I'll be sharing a track from each day this week. Enjoy!

Very cool. I've been getting into electronic music lately. I wonder why Wendy Carlos never got into video game music? Seems her work would go over well in this arena.

I'm not sure who that is but I am now intrigued!

She was one of the first doing completely electronic music. Switched-On Bach was her first big hit way back in '69. She did mostly classical translations but then did movie music like the score to Clockwork Orange, Shinning and Tron. She did some ambient stuff after that but not a whole lot. Her Tales of Heaven and Hell from '98 is great scary stuff though. I'd like to know her thoughts on video game music.

Sounds like she would have been a solid choice once games hit the CD medium.

She was making music on ocilators and really primative synthesizers. I would've thought chip tune stuff would fascinate her. I'll have to call her up. She lives somewhere near me, I'm pretty sure.

Genesis music isn't bad to me at all, just has a different and more gritty quality compared with SNES. I really want them to release a Mini Genesis.

There has been a plug-and-play Genesis for several years but Sega farmed it out to a third party and it's trash. I hear the emulation is real bad and there is no way to save any of the games, even the ones with built-in save features (try playing Phantasy Star IV in one sitting). I hope Sega gets their act together and puts one out themselves that is up to the standard set by Nintendo but definitely avoid what is currently out there.

Yeah I'm aware of what's out there. I did like that one had an actual cartridge port but I guess it had other issues.

A lot of people criticize it, but I much prefer Genesis music to SNES music, except for the standouts like FF6 and whatnot. I used to have every Genesis song on my Winamp player and just listened to them all.

I've got an app on my phone that lets you download the original sound files. It hasn't been updated in years but somehow still works. *knock on wood* I'm going to be heartbroken if iOS ever breaks it.

I think I have that same app!

I've always preferred SNES music, but there have been a few times that the Genesis impressed me.  Mostly with Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 3, and Ristar.

I'm right with you there on preferring SNES overall. For BaD I'm trying to share some lesser known stuff. Those ones you mentioned are good though.

There's a great remix of this theme on OCR
