When you're poor, sometimes you play game demos more than you play whole games. This was the case for me with Quake 3 Arena when the "Test" released at the turn of the century. I played this game endlessly, and loved it, racking up frags and deaths at an exponential rate. It would be some time before I got the fool game and a video card to truly enjoy it, but I played the Q3Test so much, it's insane.

While at the time, detractors complained there was no story, as opposed to the first two Quakes, as time has gone on, people are still playing Quake 3 Arena. It was even playable in a browser for a while (still?)

As far as pure, twitch FPS gaming, Quake 3 can't be beat. The weapons are mostly great, the levels flow pefectly, and it looked great. The announcer was great too.

Eventually, I tired of Quake 3, and started playing more Half-Life mods like Team Fortress, but I'll never forget those fraggging good times.

I think we've all been in that spot where we played that one demo because we couldn't afford the full game at the time. I played one Quake game on the original XBox and it had a story but I really didn't pay attention to it. Quake seems like a game that could be just as good with or without a storyline.

I miss getting demos in PlayStation Magazine.

Those are cool. I still have a stack of them.

We had Macs growing, so I missed out the '90s FPS scene, though we did have a demo for one of the Marathon games at some point.

I played this on Dreamcast, a system I got right before Gamestop shipped them all out to the warehouse. I think I paid $40 for one.
