I never owned Diddy Kong Racing. In fact, I only rented it once or twice from Blockbuster video. But for some reason, the experience has always stayed with me. I'm sure nostalgia has given it more of a rosy glow than it deserves, but that's how it is. I just remember flying the little plane in it and being dazzled.

Obviously, they never made a sequel. It was a just a bit too Mario Kart, and they rolled those characters into the Mario Kart franchise, along with the flying aspects with the glider in later Mario Karts.

I feel like, despite the dominance of Playstation at that point in time, Nintendo really excelled with the N64. They made some great, sometimes experimental games. And while there was no CD drive, etc., being a N64 owner was a very pleasurable experience.

I'll probably never play Diddy Kong Racing again, unless Nintendo releases it on some kind of Virtual Console. But I'm happy with that rosy glow in my memory.

It wouldn't be too farfetched from a making a sequel. They could get Monster Games to do it. They were particularly good with Excite Truck, and the other Nintendo focused racing games.

I'd love it if they would. Probably the most creative kart racer I remember playing.

I love Diddy Kong Racing. I may still have the original cartridge for it.

It’s a very cute game.

I really liked Diddy Kong Racing because I could explore as well as race. In that regards its actually a bit like Forza Horizon, now I think of it. I like a little adventure in my racing games.

I replayed it a few years ago and didn't like the racing much or the controls. I still have fond memories of it though, and that hub area funky theme song. That's still going 'round in my head.

Yeah I haven’t played it for a long time, and I can imagine it’s aged a little.

Diddy Kong Racing is a very good game.  I played it a lot and reviewed it for my college newspaper.  But at the same time, it was the game that caused me to get a PlayStation.  Diddy Kong Racing was the N64's big holiday title that year, and I was like, "A kart racer is Nintendo's big game this season? I think I need to get a PlayStation."  And that very next Spring, I did, and it was one of the best game purchases I ever made.

There is a version of Diddy Kong Racing on the DS.

I did not know that. Interesting.

Yeah, the PSONE was a damn good system. It’s probably my favorite of all time. I just loved it.

That sounds exactly like my experience of the N64. Zelda was the only game I cared about on it after about 1997 or so.

This game looks like it would be perfect on the Switch.

Nintendo did some amazing work with the N64. I got to it years after it's run but it was a lot of fun to play and the graphics look good.

Yeah those were good times.

I skipped it. I already had Mario Kart. And for me, it summed up everything that was wrong with the N64. The console was glutted with racing games beyond Mario Kart and they were pushing a kart-racing game that Rare had seemingly thrown together in a few months as their big game of the Christmas season. Nintendo's PR department was in full-on damage control mode over the game droughts and the huge success of Final Fantasy VII on PS1. Even the big boss, Hiroshi Yamauchi, was taking potshots at FFVII. With N64 games getting canned right and left in development hell, I could already see that Earthbound 64/Mother 3 was vaporware. So I bought a PS1 a few months later.
