Another game I played on my Apple II after school was Choplifter. In this game, you are tasked with flying a helicopter and picking up hostages fleeing burning buildings and returning them to your headquarters. The headquarters was on the far right side of the 2D map, and you flew to the left, and could pick up 15 hostages at a time. When you returned to base, the hostages fled one by one into the headquarters.
Obstacles included tanks shooting at you (tanks shooting at helicopters?) and eventually attack jets. The controls of the helicopter are actually pretty good for a 2D game of this era - much more realistic than Chopper Command anyway.
The funny thing is that if you weren't careful, you could crush the hostages if you landed on them wrong. Poor bastards. You could even do this when they were fleeing your helicopter into the base, which was expecially rough.
Over the years, this game was updated and updated, including even a 3D version that bombed in the 90s. When the original came out, the gaming press hailed it as an instant classic, and that it would one day be heralded in a future games hall of fame.
Or not.
