Blog a Day #28

Hello everyone, how are you?  It's the last day of Blog a Day and with that brings my GOTY post. Well I would have but everyone out there and every site does a Game of the Year post. Which is fine. But decided to try something different this time around and instead of the generic GOTY post that pretty much everyone does, I'm gonna list all my favorite games that I played last year. Thing is I played a lot of great games last year and deciding on a handful of a few and narrow it down to just 1 game is going to be hard. I played a lot and had fun with everything I played, but this will only have my most favorites. Letsa go...

Fortnite

Fortnite: I know what you are thinking "A Battle Royale game? Seriously?" Yes seriously hypothetical reader. I know people love to hate on it because it's the most popular game out there, and it's making a ton of money. I saw the game on twitter and it looked fun. It came to the Switch and I tried it out and I can say the game is really fun. You get such an adrenaline rush when you're one of the last few players left and it's just you and the last player alive. And yes, I've gotten that sweet Victory Royale a number of times with that pic being one of my most interesting wins.

Persona 5

Persona 5: This game is gonna make its last appearance here. You and a group of high school students go out into the Metaverse to change the hearts of corrupt adults as the Phantom Thieves. One of the things I loved about it was the new gameplay mechanics like the stealth, it's no Metal Gear but it's simple and fun to sneak around. While I don't love it as much as P3 and P4G, P5 is a really great game and definitely worth checking out.

Sly 4

Sly Cooper Thieves in Time: This is the only PS3 game I played last year and it's a very good one. Sly is back with the gang and this time he goes back in time and teams up with a number of his ancestors to pull off the biggest heist of all time. I love the gameplay and the visuals looked vaslty improved. The story is pretty good and had a lot of humor in it like you would expect from the series. I definitely like it more than Sly 3. It's sadly the current game in the series and it ended the game on a cliffhanger which is unacceptible. I hope we get Sly 5 at some point.

Human Fall Flat

Human Fall Flat: One of the more smaller games I checked out last year, I saw it on a youtube video and it looked fun. It arrived n the Switch but waited till I saw it on sale. I can imagine it's a much more challeging game on its own but it's so much fun with more people. I had a ton of fun and laughs when I played it with my younger brother. Defiitely check it ut if you haven't. Oh and the soundtrack is so good too. Brings a tear to my eye.

Uncharted 4

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End: I got this game for xmas but was one of the last PS4 games I tried out before 2018 ended. As usual, you take the role of Nathan Drake on his search for fortune in beautiful and exotic and usually really dangerous remote areas around the world. The gameplay is like what I would expect but with some new added mechanics that add variety to the familiar gameplay. I really enjoyed the game and had a lot of fun. I'm such a huge fan of the series and finally glad I was able to play the last game in the series featuring Nate.

Spider-Man

Spider-man: One of the best open-world games I played last year and definitely one of the best Spider-man games I have ever played. After years of subpar games, he finally got a great game with the budget to back it up. Honestly don't know what else needs to be said about it. It does have its fair share of flaws, which I hope they address in a sequel. But it's still a great game. Batman has had a lot of success with the Arkham games, but glad Spidey is having his turn now too.

Need for Speed Payback

Need for Speed Payback: I was so hyped for this game when they first announced it, but didn't have a console that could play it at the time. Howevr as time went by everyone said the game was good, but what brought it down was EA EA-ing the game with their greed.Microtransactions and Lootboxes be damned. I got it last year digitally since it was on sale and I really enjoyed it. I would have given the other NFS game an edge over this one but there are a few things Payback does better thn NFS 2015. For one there's more variety with the events. Another is the map has better variety in locations. And the most important one is that it doesn't require an always-online connection to play. It's a really fun game if you ignore EA's greed in the game.

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered: A game everyone wanted me to play on the PS3 but I never got around to it. I fially got around to it last year on the PS4 and I really enjoyed the game. The game is a tactical rpg which is pretty different from the rpgs I play. It sounds like it might be daunting to you but it's really easy to learn and so satifying once you get the hang of it. Ever character has a specific class and a role to fill while out in the battlefield. I definitely loved sniping enemies and killing them with headshots. The graphics in this game are really beautiful too and the game runs faster too with it being on the PS4. The story is so good too which I won't speak of because of spoilers. Definitely check it out if you haven't.

                               Fantasy Life

Fantasy Life: As last time, this one was a recommendation. The game centers around your player character and in the game you can chose between 12 different classes and you take up different quests based around those classes. You can choose to pursue the main story, or you can completely ignore it and focus on sidequesting instead. You can choose what to do and there is never a shortage on things to do. You will unlock more features as you continue the story, but you can do whatever you want to do. It's such a fun and charming game, but haven't finished it yet, but really recommend playing it if you want something that will last you for a long time.

Kirby Star Allies

Kirby Star Allies: There has never been a bad Kirby game. I had a lot of fun with Star Allies. It's a bit on the easy side but Kirby games are meant for everyone can be able to play and clear them and there's nothing wrong with that. But I will say that it's a really short game. The game got various content updates last year that added more characters and modes which is great. They eve added a harder mode if you thought the game was too easy. Definitely check it out, it's such a fun game, and if you can play it with more people, definitely try it out.

 Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: I got the game in late 2017 because that's when it launched but couldn't play much of it since that's when my Switch gave me problems. I finished it last year and it's a really great game. I definitely loved the improvements they did to the gameplay. The music is really good too like it is in these games and the characters are good too. I still prefer the first game but definitely check the game out.

Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle: This one was such a surprise. When the game was first announced, everyone disliked the idea of Rabbids being in a Mario game. But to everyone's surprise, the game was really amazing. The game is a turn-based tactical rpg and it's a damn good one. The music in this game is so good, Grant Kirkhope's music is always great. The only thing I regret is not trying it out in 2017. But it goes to show you, never to judge a game before you play it, which seems to be a theme here. I hope we get a sequel at some point.

Pokemon Let's Go Eevee

Pokemon Let's Go Eevee: The first Pokemon games on the Switch was met with criticism because it looked like a simplified version of the games, and you aren't wrong on that. The games are simpe and it's meant to be that way for newcommers who are making this their very first traditional Pokemon game. But there's enough here for the core player too. They added some really good changes, like being able to see wild Pokemon out in the open world, that way you won't run into millions of Zubats at Mt. Moon. I will say that the games won't be for everyone, but if you can look past at how simple the games are then you'll definitely have fun playing the games. As before, I grew up with these games and they hit all the right notes for me, I definitely loved my timewith the game. I wouldn't mind if we got Let's Go versions of other games like set in Johto and so on in between mainline games.

Dragon Quest Builders

Dragon Quest Builders: I played the game really late last year but wanted to include it. It's such a fun and charming game. You, the Builder, are tasked with rebuilding the ruined land of Alefgard and you do this by rebuilding towns that have been destroyed. By doing this, humans will start moving into the town and eventually they will learn to build themselves. One thing I absolutely love about the game is that you learn more of the story by going out and exploring. It reminds me of Fallout in a way like you are on your main quest but you see something interesting on the way and you take that detour. You explore there and you learn more of that place and what happened. That's the exact thing that I get from DQB. The game rewards your exploration by not only finding new areas, but you get more of the story too about what happened there.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: How many times has there been a Smash Bros game that will release in the same year its been announced? The answer is not many to none. We got a teaser for it early last year and it wasn't till E3 that Nintendo showed off more of the game and the best tagline that I've ever seen which was "Everyone is Here!" Meaning every character that appeared in the games will be in Ultimate. Almost every stage is back too. Making this the biggest Smash game to date. The game is incredible. It is just packed with so much content that you'll be playing for a very long time. I definitely feel this is the most ambitious game in the series, I mean the very first one was probably the most ambitious one since a game like that at the time was unheard of. Ultimate is a game that brings everything that you loved about the series from all the previous entries and improves on it in every way. Masahiro Sakurai and his team have outdone themselves with this game. It's incredible.

On an unrelated note, I finished a 5th Mystery Game for 4 in February and that game was Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure.

And those are all my favorite games of 2018 and thus Blog a Day comes to a close. This might be the very last BaD post of the day too. Sorry if it was a bit late than usual. I've been working on it for a while but did a ton of changes to it

Like last year, I wanna thank everyone who participated as well as everyone who took the time to read my posts. This is my 6th year doing these and it was a bit of a challenge doing this with the 4 in February Challenge but managed to pull it off. I hope to be able to continue participating in Blog a Day for as long as I can. Well as always, thanks for reading and here's to another year!

Mario Kart 64

I might need to check out Payback. I was hyped for it too, until reviews hit. Glad you liked it!

That Spider-Man screen shot makes me want to play it. I am standing atop skyscrapers in Crackdown 3, but how much better would it be as Spider-Man? A lot better.
