A Couple of Updates

Going to make this short and sweet. I fixed up a couple things on the site that I thought were worth mentioning.

1) The forums have been cleaned up. Yeah, they never really took off, and I'm sure the excessive spam didn't help, but they're better off now.

2) I set up a cool new domain shortcut that I'm way too excited about. You can now get to PixlBit with the very simple url pixlb.it. Neat!

I'm in the process of writing the data conversion scripts for the new version of the site, which I keep failing to get off the ground. I'm really aiming for a go-live to coincide with the 10 year anniversary of the site in September. There's so much to do and it's kind of overwhelming with everything else going on in my life, but we'll see what I can do. I think once I get over the data conversion hump, it'll be a whole hell of a lot easier to just knock it out.

Anyway, no promises on timelines or anything, but when I do get it live, I'm thinking that the pixlb.it domain will be the default one rather than www.pixlbit.com as it is now.

Great Nick! Are you changing anything with the design of the site in the conversion?

Totally! I'm actually completely rewriting it. New technology and everything.

Most importantly, it'll be responsive, meaning it'll format nicely for all screen sizes, whether that's your phone, tablet, or PC at any resolution. I'm also changing a whole bunch of core concepts about how the site works. Going to mesh together the staff tools and the user tools, allowing anyone to effectively create content for the site, which can be promoted to an official article if it's nominated by the community or the staff.

I'm also thinking of changing some other stuff and moving to a purely tag-based system, but I'm still working through the details of that. I'm going to be moving image hosting to imgur, authentication/login is moving to Auth0 and I'll be using OAuth 2.0, which should allow you to sign in with your Google or Facebook account (you'll have to do a data conversion after login to associate all your old content with your new account).

The new tech I'm using should also make the site a lot faster to navigate and I can do a lot more fancy stuff. I built an open source framework for building stuff on Angular and REST, which I'm using to do the rewrite, so it should make it much much easier for me to be able to leverage everything I've done.

Wow, sweet! I've often wanted it to be more accessible on phones.
