Not even Twin Snakes? Geez, Matt.
MGS 4 is a pile of overconvoluted crap.

Aside from the original Metal Gear for the NES - a game I remember mostly as a series of frustrations - the only other Metal Gear game I have played is Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots. It was one of the first games I played once I had a PS3, and I remember reading glowing reviews of it beforehand. While I liked the game, I never loved it.
It IS fun in parts, but in others I was left kind of bored. The stealth is good, the weapons and gadgets are cool, but it also has idiosyncracies that had me scratching my head. First of all, I don't mind long cut scenes in games (I love Xenosaga), but the ones in MGS4 were pretty tedious sometimes, and I imagine not just because I didn't play the other MGS games. Repeated long shots of frying eggs is what I remember most.
There are some really fun parts in this game though, and some cool boss battles. However, I remember one level where you have to track someone down in Berlin or some other succh European city using this radio scanner and I HATED that level.
Still, like I said, I enjoyed playing this game. I guess I just never got into the whole MGS thing. I would like to play 5 though.
As a huge Metal Gear fan, I loved how MGS4 tied the whole series together. And the suprise appearance at the end was amazing; this game also turned Raiden into a badass. MGS5 I absolutely loved, and you can pick up the entire “complete” edition for $20 I bet. MGS5 has the best gameplay in the series, the story is very light though. I definitely think it’s worth a playthrough.
