Happy Easter! Instead of hunting eggs, I’ve hidden game reviews I’ve recently written at GamerDad.com for you to find! Please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe post a ‘like’ or comment or two! I’d appreciate it! Let’s begin!
I love the Easter holiday. I enjoy the religious and secular sides of it. Hope that’s allowed. Anyway, I was happy to find some Super Mario related Easter treats at the store, so I took pictures and wrote about them here.
ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove (PS4)
As a kid, I never had a SEGA Genesis. I was a SNES man, myself. Most of the time, I was fine with that, as the SNES had more games that interested me at the time. But there were a few times when a game on the Genesis caught my eye. ToeJam & Earl was one of those games, as it was very colorful and cartoony with unique gameplay. Over the years they’ve had a few sequels, and now they’re back again with ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove. It’s a homage to the original game on the Genesis. Just like that one, it’s really just a cleverly disguised dungeon crawler. While I like the zany characters, I’ve never really been able to truly get into the ToeJam & Earl games, as it seems you just walk around mostly, and a lot of how you do depends on luck. But I’ll always give these guys a chance anyway!
And speaking of dungeon crawlers, here’s one where you play as an anime style high school girl named Remi who is sweeping her library with a broom. She accidentally hits a talking spell book named Lore, who whisks her off to a magical world infested with evil robots. So now you must help Remi and Lore fight off baddies with silly weapons in this random dungeon crawler. Unfortunately, it’s not that great, as you die a lot so progression is very slow.
Unplugged: Street Fighter Exceed Card Game
I’m not really into board games, but I’m not going to pass up a free one to review! I liked how they implemented rules and aspects from the Street Fighter game into the cards, but I felt the rules were too complicated. But then, anything more complicated than Hungry, Hungry Hippos and my eyes just glaze over. And the pack of cards I got has the most boring-est characters ever: Ryu, Akuma, Zangief, and Sagat. Oh well, I guess beggars can’t be choosers. Can you guess who my favorite Street Fighter characters are?
When I was a kid, I remember record players and vinyl still being around. But they were quickly replaced by cassette tapes and CDs later. But now records are making a comeback over the past few years. I don’t know if it’s the technology of record players getting better or hipsters longing for that classic record sound. But now you can also get video game soundtracks on vinyl as well. So here’s a review of a Namco Museum record I got this past Christmas! I think my family got this record for me for Christmas because they thought it was a new Pac-Man Fever album. I knew about this record before, but I didn’t buy it because I knew it was just a record full of arcade sound effects and it was a bit pricey for that. But I’m glad I got it for Christmas because sometimes the best gifts are the ones you want, but you wouldn’t want to buy them yourself. I still have my Pac-Man Fever record, as well as a Pac-Man Christmas record from when I was a kid. Do you still have records? Let me know in the comments section!
I’ve always been interested in clay and stop motion animation, and even took a day-long just for fun class on it back in college. It took us all day to make a few seconds of really badly animated clay, so I have lots of respect for the folks who do this for a living. So I didn’t want to pass up reviewing this game, which is a physics based puzzler that kind of reminds me of Marble Madness in a way, but everything is made out of clay. And it has some of the best clay graphics I’ve ever seen in a game, with neat effects like everything is squishy and malleable, and different colored clay sticks to each other like when you do the same thing with Play-Doh. Unfortunately, I’m not a big fan of physics based puzzlers, and the levels are very small and there are not very many of them. But I’d love to see this clay engine used in future projects, like a new ClayFighter game. Now there’s a series due for a revival!
Thomas and Friends Adventures (iPad)
Since I write for a family oriented site, I never pass up a chance to review a kids’ game. Thomas wasn’t around when I was a kid, but if he was, I’d probably be really into that stuff (although their faces kind of creep me out). When I was a kid, I loved reading about trains, and two of my favorite Little Golden Books were The Little Red Caboose and The Little Engine that Could. So I think little Thomas fans will enjoy this app.
American Ninja Warrior Challenge (Switch)
And last is a game based on the TV obstacle course game show. I prefer the Japanese obstacle course game shows that this originated from, as they focus more on humor. This game is pretty bad, as it’s nothing but quick time events, the controls feel off, and the animation is super choppy. I haven’t watched the TV show much, but there is one thing I kind of like about it. Can you guess what that is?
Happy Easter!
And that’s all for now! Thanks for reading and posting comments and ‘likes.’ I do appreciate it! Now get off your keister and celebrate Easter! --Cary
