Run, Ranger, Run!

Crap, it's been over three months since I last wrote anything. If it's any consolation, I lead a relatively boring life in the winter, so you really didn't miss much.

I finished all three snowshoe races, and wasn't last in any of them. Finishing is the goal, not being last is a bonus. We got swag, a pair of gloves for each of the races with the race name on them, and if you did all three, you got a hat that tells the world you're a Bad Ass. I had fun. I was dreading the third race, which was five miles and we had to climb the "mountain" three times, but I actually did pretty well for pokey little me. And the best part? Having local athletic celebrity Joan Benoit-Samuelson wish me luck before the race and then ask me how I thought I did after the race. Joanie's my big sports hero. She won the first Olympic women's marathon back in 1984, and won the Boston Marathon twice, and had a record time for quite a while. I remember watching her run that Olympic marathon in Los Angeles, it was really hot, and she just had this look of dogged determination on her face the whole race. Made a big impression on 15 year old me. Flash forward many years, and she's a neighbor at the park and frequently runs through. Always waves to us, sometimes stops and chats and thanks us for all the hard work we do there. And two weeks ago, they filmed a Nike ad with her at my park. I can't be bothered to embed it here, but here's the URL to the ad on YouTube: https://youtu.be/CgUuyZ-gzDQ . The parts with the old car were filmed on the public road that bisects the park.

EDIT: Love when I forget to post this as Live.

I don’t think I could finish one snowshoe race.

Can you walk three miles? Because that's all it takes.

Mmmm... actually I was walking on the treadmill before it got hot. We keep it outside. Once it cools down I’m gonna go back to it.

I‘m 199 pounds now. I’ve lost 58 total!

Oo oo, I just walked 3 miles. I can actually do that. I want snowshoes.

Nice. I would like to try snowshoeing at least once.

I wrote this back in April, but forgot to post it "Live".

And you can come visit sometime in the winter and I'll take you out on the trails.

That's sounds great to me too.

This might be the next challenge I discuss with my run club.
And how awesome you got to meet your hero and finish the race (PLUS not come in last)! Nice!

That's a great commericial. I wish I could run again like I used to in high school. I'm pretty far from that still. I'm doing the walking more and more though. I wish I still had my cross-country skiis. It just doesn't snow that much in eastern PA.

Good for you, all that snowshoeing. I imagine it's wonderful treking through the park like that.

I'm laid off from the park in the winter, so I usually just play in the woods behind the house. I didn't get much snowshoeing in last winter because it was mostly ice, which made the first two races like running on concrete. The third race, which is the longest and the one with the most elevation, was actually the easiest race this year because there was actually snow to run on.

Sounds fun. I got to see if my local used sports equipment store has snowshoes.
