I had never heard of this game until I played it on one of the early Activision 2600 collections on PC. But when I did play it, I was pretty amazed by it. I probably would've loved it had I played it when it was new. Another Activision 2600 game that blew me away when I played it was Pressure Cooker. That game is surprisingly complex for a 2600 title!

H.E.R.O., or "Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation," was released for the Atari in 1984. It was also ported to many other systems, and most of the time, the game received high acclaim. In it, the player takes on the roll of a man with a helicopter backpack as he rescues miners from deep caves. Of course, there are monsters down there as well, which is what your handy helmet laser is for. Oh, and there's dangerous magma too.
I never owned it myself, but my best friend had it, and I would go over to his house and watch him play it. He was quite good at it. Unlike a lot of Atari games, HERO features multiple screen levels, and a lot of levels. I was never good at it though.
It always filled me with a sense of wonder, like a lot of games I never owned but experienced through friends. It seemed so much more than a lot of Atari games at the time. In fact, it's quite NES like, except for the graphics.
But like I said, I never owned it, not even when I was collecting systems back in the late nineties in San Francisco. I definitely recommend it though.
