What a Horrible Night for a Curse - Castlevania 2

The original Castlevania is one of the few Nintendo games my older brother really got into. Lord knows why - it's a damn punishing game. After playing it over and over, he finally confronted Dracula at the end, and bested him. My younger brother and I cheered! And then the dying Dracula morphed into a giant monster and killed my older brother. He never played many video games after that.

I wasn't crazy about the original Castlevania, but I played a lot of its sequel, Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest. I never beat it. I don't think I even got that far. But for a short time I was obsessed with it. I've always had a fondness for 2D scrolling RPG's... I don't know why as there haven't been that many great ones until lately with Hollow Knight and games like it. But for some reason, games like Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2 always captured my imagination.

The game is more of an RPG than the first Castlevania, but nothing as complex as we see today. You can earn money and buy items, and there's a day and night cycle which affects the enemies that attack you. There are towns to explore that are safe compared to the rest of the game.

I would play this again, maybe. It's certainly not very well regarded... it's very difficult and a bit obtuse. The later Castlevania games get all the attention. But this was definitely an important stepping stone.

Must share this very-acquired-taste song about Castlevania II:

I'd say this game gets lots of attention, but it's mostly negative attention or apologist YouTubers. A lot of kids had an issue with how obtuse it was, others just remember the good times.

That's funny about your brother deciding final form bosses were enough to make him quit gaming. I kinda get it. lol

Ha ha, yes it’s a very good reason! Tongue Out

I love the graphics in Castlvania games. Too darn hard for me though. I played Dark Castle around that time. Sort of similar game for the Apple Mac, but not as hard.

Never played this one before. I went from CV 1 to SCV IV and Dracula X. Looks a little like a game I did play, Faxanadu. I guess since I have the CV collection on Switch I can take a crack at this.

Faxanadu is great! That needs a reboot!

I remember Castlevania being super popular when I was a kid.  Everyone I knew had it.  I never really got into it, though.  The only Castlevania game I liked was Kid Dracula.

My friend rented Castlevania 2 back in the day and beat it!  I remember because I saw the ending with him.  I didn't really play it much, but I had fun watching him play it.

When I did play Castlevania 2 many years later by myself, I didn't like how many opportunities enemies had to knock you into insta-death pits.  No thanks.

Damn. I can barely comprehend someone beating Castlevania 2. Seems impossible.

Yeah, I'm no fan of insta-death pits. The NES Ninja Gaiden drove me crazy with those.

I have the best memories of Simon's Quest.  It was just so much fun imputing codes and exploring the world

I have good memories of this game too. It was just fun to explore.

I beat Castlevania II back in 2012 when I was playing it so I could write a review of it. I actually found it to be easier than the first game. I jmust used a FAQ to get me past the obtuse parts.

That's pretty impressive! Still must have been tough!
