I wonder if you got to the point where they had to re-play it like 27 times on AVGN to finally beat it. I remember bats being involved.

There's nothing like a good old-fashioned bottomless pit. In classic video games they seem to be almost everywhere. Where do they end up? Nowhere! They're bottomless. Whether you miss-timed a jump, or got shot, or got bumped by an erratic bird, bottomless pits have claimed many a hero. And most of them were in Ninja Gaiden for the NES.
This game is legendary for a few reasons. First, it was the first game (that I know of), to use "cut scenes" - which were basically just static images with a little text. Second, this game is pretty goddamned insanely difficult, and incredibly long. It takes serious skill and endurance to beat it, something I managed for other games when I was a kid, but never this one. Oh, I got close. But not close enough.
The franchise has lived on in the arcades, and in modern versions (both of which I'll be talking about soon), but this was where it all started. Craving frustration? This game has got you covered.
