Oh Hell No - Golgo 13

Golgo 13 was the sort of NES game you saw in Nintendo Power that made you say to yourself, "Damn, this game has everything!" Unfortunately, it's also the sort of NES game that when you rent it from the video store, you say to yourself, "Damn, this game is a mess!"

Based on a popular manga, the story is about a superspy who takes on rebirthed Nazism. However, like Bionic Commando, these elements had to be reconfigured due to Nintendo's harsh stance on anything political. So, instead of Nazis, you're out to destroy "Dreck." Whatever that is. Of course, we know they're really Nazis.

A majority of the game takes place in a first person maze, which probably led to this game being known as crap. It does have cool cut scenes for the day though, which we take for granted now.

I remember renting it and not getting very far at all. It's a bit obtuse, difficult, and kind of stupid.

But it sure looked cool!

I THINK my friend rented this one, but I don't remember much about it.  Guess we didn't play it very much.  I remember reading in Nintendo Power that it was based on a book.  They didn't specify if it was a manga or not, but I did go to a bookstore and try to find it.  But this was back when bookstores wouldn't have even heard of manga, so no luck there.  But it was fun to learn about that tidbit of info.

Speaking of which, I also enjoyed learning more about Little Nemo when Capcom released Little Nemo: The Dream Master on NES (very good game, by the way, still have it).  Anyway, in Nintendo Power, they also said it was based on a comic strip from the early 1900's, and so I tried to look for books of it at the bookstore as well.  I didn't, but I did do some research and learned a lot about Little Nemo and Winsor McKay, who was doing animation before Disney was in diapers.  Years later I did find collections of Little Nemo comics at a half price book store and I continue to try and learn more about that stuff to this day.  Who says video games aren't educational?

Yeah, Little Nemo is pretty famous. I'm not really familiar with it.

I hope mostly people rented this game. People who bought it were probably disappointed.

Seems kind of ambitious with mixing 2D and 3D gameplay.

it's definitely ambitious. But it didn't work out.

During college, a law student friend of mine was a gamer and was into modding and emulation in his spare time and among other things provided my brother and I with a Dreamcast disc (meaning, it ran on the DC) that has emulations of all NES and Famicom games. I remember seeing a Golgo 13 anime film on really late Friday night Cinemax back in the 90s (back when Cinemax tried airing mature, crazy anime titles past the usual softcore porn fare; examples include Wicked City, Ninja Scroll) so I did try the game on the disc out of curiosity. It's not a good game.

No, it's not a good game.

I remember when emulation CDs were a thing with the Dreamcast. My friend had a bunch of those.

Looks sort of ambitious for the NES. Not saying it isn't a mess, but it is. I think it had a sex scene in it somewhere. Kind of reminds me of how the GB re-release of Dragon Warrior allowed you to take the Princess (or a random horny girl on the streets) to the Inn and apparently have a night of wild sex with her before you returned her to the king.

Apparently Nintendo of America's staff in charge of censor- err, making sure games were family-friendly didn't make it far enough through Bionic Commando to see that the ultimate bad guy was Hitler - the actual Hitler, or to see his monologue contain a four-letter word, or to see the picture of his head exploding. I'd love to have been the guys at Capcom who got that past the radar.

When I was a kid, there was nothing more satisfying than seeing Hitler’s brain explode in Bionic Commando. I played that game over and over. Laughing
