I always wanted to play this but never did. I think I could never find it at flea markets. That was probably the reason.
What the Hell IS This? - Defender of the Crown for NES

Never let anybody tell you there weren't complex games on the NES. "Defender of the Crown," was originally an Amiga game that was so popular it was ported to practically everything, including the Nintendo Entertainment system. At the time, it was revered for its amazing graphics and strategy gameplay. And yes, it was a robust, complex strategy game simulating 15th century war in England.
However, as a ten year old kid, I didn't understand it at all. I guess maybe I saw an ad for it in a magazine or something and asked for it. All I know is I had it. It had great music, which I believe was just 8 bit versions of classical tunes. But its obtuse complexity was WAY too much for my young brain.
I don't hear people talk about it much now, but it was a pretty big deal at the time. I don't know if it was simpler on the NES than it was on computers... probably. But it was very well reviewed at the time, perhaps especially so because there were so few games out then that were like it. I imagine that people who loved it REALLY loved it.
But me? I probably still couldn't figure it out today.
