Only reason why I would want to play Half-Life is its connections with the Portal story.
One of the Greatest - Half-Life 2

There are many, many brilliant moments in Half-Life 2, but my favorite is sort of a personal one. I was playing the game as my brother watched, making my way through a building along with the AI companion, Alyx, as we were pursued by the enemy. I came across a TV that was playing a speech by the tyrant overlord of the city. For some inexplicable reason, I decided to shoot the TV. Alyx, the AI, commented, "Yeah, now is not the time to be watching TV."
Years later, I am still so impressed with this moment. First, someone had to think of the possibility. Then they put it in the game, and I randomly experienced it. It might not seem impressive so much now, but at the time, it was amazing.
The game was hyped for many years before it finally came out, and we can thank its designs for games such as Bioshock, Crysis, and many another FPS that cribbed from it. I don't play many FPS games anymore, because when I did, I could always trace whatever happened in them to innovations in Half-Life 2.
Maybe someday we will get Half-Life 3. Maybe not. But if we don't, we will always have Half-Life 2.
