Played Some Mariokart on iOS.

So last night I loaded up my iPad to play some new Mariokart and the system was down. I guess everyone trying to play it either broke it or Nintendo wanted to make sure everything works. It wasn’t a big deal because truthfully I forgot that it was being released until I saw something on Twitter about it. Anyways I woke up earlier than usual so I can get the install and other stuff out of the way and I’ve been playing the game for about two hours and here are some quick thoughts about the game:

-You need to set up a Nintendo account. It took me a couple of tries to remember what my password is. Heck it took me a minute to remember what my username is. (Thanks Nintendo Switch)

-The touch controls are little funky at first but after a couple of races it seems fine (I’m using drift controls): drag your finger across the screen to drift depending on direction, tap the screen to shoot weapons, and I think tap near the bottom to shoot the weapon backwards.

-You can play as much as you want but the only cap is you can only upgrade your character a certain amount each day.

-”Multiplayer” isn’t working yet.

-Cups are four races, three of the races has the chance to earn 5 stars, the fourth race is a type of special race where you have to achieve a task using a selected driver. Tasks are things like drive through X amount of rings, Finish 1st, execute a certain amount of jumps, etc. Each Cup requires a certain amount of stars to unlock.

-The usual Freemium things such as Gold Membership where you pay $5/month extra bonuses and perks like the 200cc level of races. Along with log-in bonuses, and chances to buy characters with in-game coins.

Overall I liked the game. A lot of the tracks are from previous Mariokart games, and I’m assuming the NY level is from the most recent game. The graphics are nice, but they are night and day between my iPad and my iPhone. I’m interested to see how the Multiplayer works. I think it’s going to be like other games where you race against someone’s race kind of like the ghost car in some racing games.

Oh and in other games:

-I’m still logging in crazy hours with Gems of War. Nothing new, still dumping a ton of gold into the Guild even if the Guild only has like four people actively contributing while everyone else is leeching.

-I downloaded the free GTA San Andreas from Rockstar. The music is still there which is good, I get confused with the controls and I keep hitting up for the smart phone forgetting that the game is set in the 90s. Also the controls are confusing because they are labeled as JOY1-8 or so and I have an idea of how things work.

-I started up playing PC games again. Nothing fancy just downloaded a couple of games on Steam

-I’m playing old Madden on PS4. I’m using the Buccaneers because they have a couple of different uniforms I can mix and match and I have no attachment to the players on the team so I can trade away anyone I don’t like. The Run N’ Shoot Bucs won the Super Bowl and currently are 1-0 in Season 2.

Alright Pixlpeeps I am off, long time no talk, but I should be around. Have a good week!

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

The Buccaneers won the Super Bowl? Good lord! Tongue Out

yeah, I'd rather spend that five bucks a month on Apple Arcade which I was looking at yesterday. Oceanhorn 2 looks great.

Haha yeah those crazy Bucs

$5/month towards Apple Arcade is a much better deal especially with all content. I still need to finish the first Oceanhorn on Switch.

Mario Kart Tour is all right.  Controls are OK unless you want to do any precision driving, then they're awful.  I like how the score and star system works, but not later on in the game when you have to have a bunch to unlock new cups.  And that's where the precision driving comes in.  All the tracks are from old Mario Kart games except the New York one.  That's the only new track.  I'm all for using old tracks, but it's hard to stay interested in a game when there is only one new one.  I guess if you've never played a Mario Kart game before and want a casual racing experience, this is a good game.  But if you've played all the other Mario Kart games like I have, this one won't do it for you.  I plan to review this game at GamerDad in a couple of weeks.

Hey by the way, I know you like to watch Netflix so I wanted to share with you a series I've been enjoying on Netflix lately.  It's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.  It's so freaking good!  Jim Henson was a huge part of my childhood so this feels like something I would've watched back then.  So if you like Jim Henson stuff, I highly recommend it.

Oh man sometimes during some races I wish the controls were tighter because I'll miss some jumps where I could have really used the points to earn another star. I've played all but the WiiU Mariokart, but I heard the Switch version is basically the same and I've liked the games but I wouldn't consider this game to be part of the series. I see it as more of spin-off and that is due to the freemium caps placed on the game and trying to hit artifical goals. Now if Nintendo was willing to make this game without the caps and have people pay for a full game, it could be but as of right now I see it as another mobile racer inside the Mario Universe.
