Good evening everyone.

Tonight I felt a twinge of nostalgia and decided to check out a video series I hadn’t seen since I was a kid. If you were a watcher of evening television back in the late 80s/early 90s then you were no stranger to the TV program called Unsolved Mysteries. Originally hosted by Robert Stack the series consisted of dramatizations of various unsolved mysteries that dealt with unsolved murders, lost loved ones, the unexplained and of course the supernatural and the paranormal. What made this show different from other dramatization shows for its time, Unsolved Mysteries strived to include the original people and law enforcement involved in these cases as part of the dramatizations. During its original run they even included a phone number you could call in if you happen to have any information that could help solve the mysteries shown that night. For a time Unsolved Mysteries was a precursor to other shows like America’s Most Wanted that involved a similar phone line for the public.

What I liked the most about this series was its attempt to deliver a powerful and compelling story behind the mystery shown. The musical score used during the show is haunting and the special effects used were amazing for their time. Though at times the people involved in the dramatizations were not actors some of the time, the actual people involved in the mystery helped to cement the series from it being just some variety show about unknown mysteries. It involved real people in real events, given it a gravitas that not many shows had at that time. It made the dramatizations all the more believable, especially when it came to the explained mysteries or the ones that dealt with the supernatural/paranormal. Host Robert Stack helped nail the intro and outros of each mystery that further added validity to what was being shown on screen.

With the original series now available on a variety of streaming services for free, as well as on YouTube, and talk of the show being revived on Netflix, I thought I’d share two episodes from the original series that spooked me as a kid. The first video I remember scared me half to deal was the case of the Allagash Abductions from Season 7, Episode 21. The episode itself mostly covered aliens and alien abductions but this particular mystery with its original artwork, voice recordings and special effects helped to make me think twice about meeting an E.T. in my lifetime. The second video hit rather close to home given that one case in Season 2 Episode 4 dealt with a murder in my home state of Nebraska. Most episodes dealt with murders in other major cities in other more populated states. But to hear of one in MY state made me start locking my house and room door, especially when I learned it involved a member of law enforcement.

Whether you’ve seen these classic shows before or if this is your first time I do hope you enjoy.

As did I. Here's hoping the revival series will be just as good.

I didn't know they're bringing it back.  There are so many shows like it now, that I don't know if it'll have the same impact.  Back then, there wasn't as many shows like that.

True. When it was revival on CBS it just didnt' feel the same with the different host. Not sure if it'll rekindle the classic but i'm curious to see what Netflix can do.

I'll have to ask my girlfriend if she's into this. We've watched shows like Twilight Zone and X-Files together.

Give it a try. You never know, espeically with the episodes I suggest. Fun Fact. The Lyons, Nebraska case was filmed on location. I can personally atest to that!
